Course objectives and requirements At the end of the course students will be
comfortable reading different types of magazines Students will read the selected articles individually
and discuss comprehension questions in pairs and small groups.
Midterm and final exams account for 30 and 40 per cent of the semester final grade respectively, homework and active participation for another 30 per cent.
Missing more than one third of the class constitutes mandatory failure.
Week 1
Dressing Up Your Pet Learn about people who dress up their pets. Talk about your own pets. Would you dress
them up?
Week 2
Are Animals Left-Handed We know that people can be left-handed? What
about animals? We’ll be looking at recent research.
Week 3
The Shanghai World Expo The Shanghai World Expo showcased the latest
developments in science and technology. If you had the money would like to attend the
next World Expo? What would you like to see there?
Week 4
Magic Secrets Revealed Do you enjoy watching people perform magic
tricks? Have you ever watched the Masked Magician
on TV? How do you feel about this show?
Week 5
Spend Time Like Money Talking about time, we say that we can save
time. Everybody is Bill Gates in terms of time.
Week 6
The Sour Taste You Love Take a fresh look at vinegar. What would we do
without it?

Week 12
How Google Can Make You Smarter How Google is extending your mind and
making smarter. How often do you use Google in your everyday
