Guide Pins and Bushings -We offer the full range, inch & metric

• Our Plain Bearing line offers you three types of guide pins(straight, demountable and double diameter) and two kinds ofbushings (demountable steel and our unique, patented SinteredBronze Bushing.) All of these components are color-coded forSelective FitTM and are fully interchangeable with one another.

• Our Ball Bearing line employs the same three guide pins plustwo styles of ball bushings (straight sleeve and demountable).Unlike our competitors, our design is interchangeable with allmajor ball bearing brands on the market. Finally, you have atyour disposal a “one size fits all” ball bearing line.

• We manufacture and stock the world’s largest inventory ofDanly style metric guiding. Why? Because in North Americawe are READY Technology, outside North America we areDanly International*, and we manufacture and sell Danly diesets and guiding through our ten plants and offices in Europeand in the Far East. Now we’re making our extensive line ofmetric components available to our U.S. customers.

*Make no mistake: Neither Ready Technology or Danly International or any of theDanly companies outside North America is affiliated in any way with Danly Die Set orConnell Limited Partnership

In the following pages, you will see a number of innovative ideasdesigned to increase the performance of your stamping tools, reduce your inventory costs, simplify die assembly and mainte-nance, and maximize available die space.

Here are some of the highlights:

READY Plain andBall Bearing Components

• Each Ready pin serves a dual function - it can operate as aplain bearing pin or a ball bearing guide pillar. This saves youthe cost of a dual inventory.

• Ready’s Selective FitTM system matches each pin to the correctbushing to achieve the proper fit. Each part is color-coded(white, blue, or yellow), so as long as the color spot on the pinmatches that of the bushing, the running clearance in eachpin/bushing pair in your tool will be identical.

Since the clearance grows in proportion with the pin diameter,Selective FitTM automatically gives you the proper running fit foryour application.

• You now have a choice of clamping methods with our demount-able pins. You can secure the flange with traditional toe clampsand screws, or you can hold the pin in place with a stopwasher mounted in the underside of the die shoe. By eliminat-ing the toe clamps you gain extra die space.

• Another innovation which saves space is Ready’s patentedRing System. In effect you can now use our ball bearing sleevebushing like a demountable bushing. Since the sleeve bushingand Ring System clamps have a smaller footprint than a tradi-tional demountable bushing you save on die space. Pleaserefer to page 11 for details.

Plain BearingComponents

Our Demountable Pins are designed for use in either plainbearing or ball bearing applications. Like our precision press fitpins, they are case hardened to 60 - 64 Rc, then core temperedfor toughness.

They can be assembled to the same die set plate hundreds oftimes without distorting the hole center distances or damagingthe holes themselves. So they not only simplify die building andmaintenance, but they ensure maximum accuracy as well.

Ready demountable pins can be held in place either with toeclamps and screws, or with a retainer plug. This second optionincreases the die space available.

Demountable Steel Bushings (-645)Our Steel Bushings are manufactured to the same high level of precision as ourSintered Bronze Bushings. If operated at moderate speeds and side loads withgood lubrication, they are an economic substitute for sintered bronze bushings. These two types of bushings are fully interchangeable.

READY Plain Bearing Components

Precision Guide Pins (-825)Our Precision Guide Pins are designed to be used with eitherplain bearing or ball bearing bushings.

Vacuum degassed, ball bearing quality steel is induction hard-ened to 60 - 64 Rc, then core tempered for toughness. Thisproduces an optimum combination of wear resistance for longoperating life and shock resistance for safety.

Our Sintered Bronze Bushings set a new standard of performance for stampingdie guide bushings. A layer of bronze is sintered to the inside diameter of asteel bushing, creating a mechanical bond at the bronze/steel interface strongerthan that of traditional plated bushings. Please refer to the following page for details.

Our double diameter pins are also designed for use with ball bearing as well asplain bearing bushings. They are case hardened to 60-64 Rc for wear resis-tance, then core tempered for toughness. A tapped hole is provided at the endof the pin for the ball cage assembly.

The press fit diameter is interchangeable with familiar brands of plain bearingand ball bearing pins, so Ready double diameter pins may be used for diemaintenance as well as for new tooling.

Bronze plating is not a simpleprocess. If the bushing is dirty orthere are contaminants in the platingsolution, the bronze will not adhereproperly and will peel away from thesurface. The fourth batch of bush-ings, for example, will be less likelyto be defect-free than the first batchplaced in a tank with fresh platingsolution.

The second problem with plating isthat the thickness of the bronze layerdepends on the plating time. A thickbronze layer is simply too costly toproduce, and on large diameterbushings in particular, problems arisewhen the thin plating wears awayand the underlying steel comes incontact with the guide pin.

READY’s Sintered Bronze Bushingssolve both problems. Using a patent-ed manufacturing process, a layer ofbronze is sintered to the inside diam-eter of the steel bushing, creating astrong, reliable mechanical bond. The thickness of the bronze layer isnot limited by time or cost con-

straints, so it is thicker than platedbronze, and it increases proportion-ally with the bushing diameter.

You can test the bond strengthsyourself. Cut through the diameter ofa plated bushing and you stand agood chance to see peeling. Do thesame with our sintered bushing andyou will see that the bronze-steelbond is unaffected. If you need toshorten the inserted diameter to fitour bushing into a thin stripper plate, you can do so without harming it.

There is a third advantage to oursintered bushings. Because sinteredbronze is porous, it holds the lubrica-tion oil in place and helps tomaintain an unbroken lubricationlayer, which improves wear resis-tance. The bronze pores act assmall oil reservoirs, so our SinteredBronze Bushings are more forgivingif maintenance has been overlooked. However, for best results, we recom-mend regular, periodic lubricationwith a high viscosity oil.

• Thicker Bronze: The sintered bronze in our bushings issubstantially thicker than the plating technology it replaces.

• Porous Surface: Holds the lubrication oil where you need itmost, to resist wear. Sintered bronze is porous bronze, up to40% porosity.

• Stronger Bond: Our patented process forms a unique fusionbond so the bronze and substrate become one. See the 1000xmagnification in the adjacent panel.

• Wear Resistance: The combination of increased thickness, porosity and stronger bonding means our bushing is your bestchoice for high speed and eccentric loading. The longest lifepossible under extreme conditions.

Our patented Sintered BronzeBushings offer many advantagesover plated bronze bushings.

Ball Bearing CagesOperating Conditions

For optimum performance guidepins should be mounted in thepunch holder. This allows the ballcage to reposition itself, if preloadis relieved on each press stroke.Complete assemblies (guide pin, ball cage and bushing) should beordered to insure proper fit.

Recommended LubricationWe recommend lubricating theball bushing assembly once each8 hour shift. Use a refined mineraloil with a viscosity of 290/340SSU at 100° F, combining “EP”additives and rust inhibitors, suchas Mobil Compound AA or MobilGear 626.

Installation Instructionsfor Sleeve Bushings UsingBushing Mount1. Degrease bushing OD and

die shoe bore with alcohol, acetone or other volatile solventand wipe dry.

2. Apply Bushing Mount sparinglyto both surfaces.

3. Wring bushing into die shoe.

4. Allow 4-hour cure at 72°F.To accelerate cure, heat withheat-lamp. Do not disturbbushing until cure is complete.

5. Honing is not required afterinstallation.

Ball Bearing Cages (-8225)

You can use any of our guide pins inball bearing applications becauseeach of the 3 styles is designed fordual purpose in both friction solidguiding and ball bearing guiding.

Vacuum degassed, ball bearing quali-ty steel is induction hardened to 60-64 Rc, then core tempered for tough-ness. This produces an optimum com-bination of wear resistance for long

Our Ball Cages use AFBMA Grade10 precision ball bearings, accurateto within .0001”. These ball bearinghave been chosen for their high hard-ness and excellent resistance to wearand deformation. They are retainedsecurely in place by a hardened alu-minum alloy cage, heat treated fortoughness and wear resistance.

Each ball bearing is held in placewith 360° staking. This is a saferdesign than two or four point staking.

We offer two types of ball bearingbushings. Our Demountable BallBearing Bushings are flange mountedand held in place with toe clamps andscrews. They are interchangeable withfamiliar brands of demountable ballbushings.

Our Straight Sleeve bushings offersomething quite new. All sleeve bush-ings 1 1/2” in diameter and largerincorporate our patented Ring Systemclamping groove, which provides sev-eral benefits. Please refer to the follow-ing page for details.

If you prefer, however, you can secureour sleeve bushings in the traditional

operating life and shock resistance forsafety.

The guide pin retains the ball cage bymeans of a washer assembly. Thecage is free to rotate 360°, so scoringand tracking on the guide pin surfaceare eliminated or reduced.

Our guide pins are interchangeablewith all the major brands.

Failure tests show that a 360° stakedball requires a substantially higherforce to become dislodged.

Ready Ball Cages are free to rotatewithin the ball bushing assembly, sowear on the guide pin and bushing isreduced. The ball bearings arearranged in a double spiral pattern,so that each ball bearing travels alongits own unique path. Tracking isreduced and operating life isenhanced.

manner with Bushing Mount. Up toeleven tons of force are required todislodge the bushing once the BushingMount has properly cured. Pleasefollow the assembly procedure out-lined in the side panel on this page.Bushing Mount compound is availableupon request.

Our ball bearing bushings are inter-changeable with most major brands;for brands with a smaller register fitthan ours, we have left the OD of ourstraight sleeve bushing soft, enablingyou to turn down the OD to match.See your READY representative fordetails.

The RingSystem

The Ring System - Our Straight Sleeve BushingHas Just Become Demountable

Our patented Ring Systemconsists of a slightly curvedclamp which fits into a 4°angled groove. As the clampingscrew is tightened the clampwedges against the slot, holdingthe bushing securely in place.

This design produces realbenefits. Since the Ring Systemmakes the sleeve bushing easyto assemble and disassemble, die building and maintenanceare simplified. Ring Systembushings are less costly toproduce than demountablebushings, so you save on pur-chase cost.

In addition, Ring Systembushings give you more diespace. You can see in the tablebelow that the Ring Systemsleeve bushing takes up lessspace than a demountable ballbearing bushing of traditionaldesign.

Type IIa

Type IIb

Preload Relieved

Type III

Disengaged

Type I is recommended forhigh speed, high productiondies. Throughout the pressstroke, all ball bearingsremain in preloaded contactwith the guide pin andbushing.

Please note that a Type Idesign may be run on ashorter stroke press, but not ona press whose stroke is longerthan originally chosen.

Type IIb is recommended ifcreeping is a problem. Assoon as the last ball leavespreload on the up stroke, thecage repositions itself. Thisfeature can eliminate anagging maintenance chore.

Type III permits an unlimitedstroke. Also, if shorterbushings and cages can beused, Type III is economical.

However, a pinch point is created when the componentsdisengage, so Type III shouldnot be selected if it compromises safety.

At top stroke, some ballbearings have left preload. On the down stroke theyreengage the guide pin andbushing, producing a smallupward force which helpscounteract the natural tendency of the ball cage tocreep downward.

Selecting theCorrect Components

Guide Pin Length Selection

Guide Pins1. Calculate L using one of the following formulas:

L = T - (U + Z) for assembly with sleeve bushings

L = T - (U + Z) - J + E for demountable bushings

2. For straight pins, select a length equal to L. If L is not a standardlength, choose a longer pin and cut to L, or choose a shorter lengthand recess the pin in the punch holder to L, making sure that theminimum press fit length is at least equal to the pin diameter.

3. For demountable pins, select a length so that K + F is as close aspossible to L without exceeding it.

Bushings1. If the tool’s working stroke is short and there are no off-center loads,

select the shortest bushing which will produce the desired operatingcondition. Turn to the selection chart on pages 26 and 27, find thestroke, and read down that column until it intersects the operatingcondition you have selected. The bushing you need is listed on thatline.

2. When rigidity and resistance to side load are required, use theselection chart to choose the longest bushing consistent with thedesired operating condition.

CAUTION: Make sure the top of the bushing does not strike thepunch holder or the demountable pin clamp screw, either when thedie is new or die life is depleted. If it does, select the next shorterbushing.

Cages1. The page 26-27 selection chart automatically gives you the correct

cage. It is listed on the same line as the bushing you have selected.

2. Different combinations of cages and bushings are possible, but thenthe selection chart does not apply. You will need to make a layout ofthe cage travel from the start of preload to bottom stroke. This figuregives you the position of the guide pin, bushing, and cage at thestart of preload. From that point on, the cage travels half thedistance of the guide pin.
