Project 6: A Live/Work Space
Tokyo, Japan
Using 3 given shipping containers, create a living and working environment to suit Frank and Betty, grandparents in Tokyo, Japan.
Family is very important to them and they have two young grandsons who take turns to spend the night. They often go out for the day so are rarely in the house playing.Tai Chi is vital to both. They practice outside early each morning whatever the weather.Frank and Betty also enjoy entertaining outdoors in the summer and having meals in the evening sun.

Brief:
As part of this years RSA Awards, we were asked to pick from one of two briefs. I chose the Circular City which asked us to “Design a structure or other element of the built environment that can be easily disassembled or reconfigured to meet different functional requirements and helps to eliminate construction waste.
Concept:
My concept was to create a piece inspired by simple ‘slot-together’ toys and very small, intimate musical experiences. I aimed to design something that was easily transportable and could capture the moments in the space and share with members of the public all over the country.
Due to the regeneration of the NTU Estate, the Student Union has been operating out of a number of quite separate locations, one of these is Spanky Van Dykes. At present this is providing a facility predominantly for students to meet up, but fails to provide the broad range of facilities that the student union did previously.
The brief:To come up with proposals that make the current space function more effectively and efficiently for the Student Union creating a much more cohesive experience for both the staff and the users.
The colour scheme of the design is linked to the Nottingham Trent Students Union logo and the theme has been used throughout: The walls, retail displays, and the false ceiling of the offices.
Originally built in 1910 as a cinema it has been used as a theatre, carpet warehouse, and finally a series of pubs and bars ever since. My aim was to bring some of it’s history back into it’s present use.
