PUBLIC SPACESEMESTER: 2th ACADEMIC YEAR 2009-10PROFESSOR: JORDI BELLMUNTWORK BY A 2 PERSONS TEAM(9 WEEKS)

SUBJECT: INTERVENTIONS AT THE VILLAGE OF VALDELTORMO,MATARRANYA, SPAIN

Main concept:The village Valdeltormo is located, in a landscape with particular morphology and variation in the topography, where plantations and forest zones harmonically co-exist. This project focuses on shaping the public spaces of the village through a series of classified interventions whose purpose is to upgrade the area while strengthening the village’s old core. Furthermore, the creation of an agricul-tural park/museum is recommended in an abandoned rural zone which will function both as a reflection of the village and strengthening it as a tourist attraction. This allows the development of two linear landscapes connected in a systemic strategy that will reform the entire territory.

DIPLOMA PROJECT ACADEMIC YEAR 2007-2008

THEME: CHANGEABLE SPACE:INTERVENTIONS AT “EKSORAISTIKI” OPEN AIR CINEMA.

WORK BY 2 PERONS TEAM:MELINA ANALYTI - ILIAS KAMPOURAKIS

SUPERVISORS:EVELIN GAVRILOU, GEORGOS TRIANTAFILLIDIS, MARIA VRONTISSI

CHANGEABLE SPACE: INTERVENTIONS TO THE OPEN AIR CINEMA “EKSORAISTIKI”

The following applied project employs a study relevant to a building square located in central Volos (Greece) and surrounded by the roads Dimitriados, Argonayton - Philhellenon - Polimeri - I. Kartali.

Its southern side is lies on the road Dimitriados and borders with the park of Saint Konstantinos. According to the B.S. study, its main characteristic is the building of “Excoraistiki”, a Listed Building which constitutes a diachronic landmark of the city.

The underlying building square also includes the well-known open cinema, which is of historical importance due to its characteristic front aspect.

The main objective of the subject study is the reformation of the B.S. whilst (simultaneously) maintaining unobstructed the operational activity of the aestival cinema.

The basic idea is the transformation of the cinematic space in combination with the over drafted interior spaces of the B.S. in a way that they constitute a united multifunctional space. In other words a relived space that will operate all year long whilst offering a catalogue of applications serving multiple pusposes.

Additionally the building could possibly restructured to feature to a communal space where facilities of the (already) existing buildings are peacefully embroidered.

Indicative spatial operations: cinema - theatre - concert space - square.

In particular this Diploma Project selected by the University of Thessaly as one of the three best to be presented in the 6th Greek Architectural exhibition “WALLS” that will take place on November 2009 in Patra, Greece. (www.sana.gr/exhibition-2009)

SPECIAL RESEARCH TOPICACADEMIC YEAR 2007-2008

THEME: ALIVERI - CONTEMPORARY INHABITING OFTHE ROM

ILIAS KAMPOURAKIS

SUPERVISORS:MARIA PAPADIMITRIOU,ALEXANDROS PSYCHOOLIS

“Aliveri – Contemporary Inhabiting of the Rom”

The Diploma thesis deals with the “inhabiting” of the Rom (Gipsies) in a Periphery which is located at the urban region of Volos (Greece).

Through an appropriate theoretical framework, as well as through an in-depth analysis focused on the settlement of Aliveri, the researcher attempts to scrutinise the role of certain factors, such as residence, culture and experiential identity of a particular disfavoured social group, the Rom, in the determinational and functionalistic morphology of a suburban settlement of Volos.

The form and functionality of the subject settlement is differentiated in relation to the remainder urban periphery, due to the existence of Rom residences in the settlement, that characterises their own particular cultural choices, but also due to the tolerance of the state, which does not exercise the anticipated control regarding the established measures in place and the integration of this settlement into the wider urban area.

In particular this research thesis presented on April 8th 2009 at the symposium “Building Together” that mounted in line of the European Research Project on Roma Housing Development in Europe EU.RO.MA (European Roma Mapping), in Volos, and on various exchibitions outside of Greece.

The architect Fotini Margarititransforms the exhibition halls in an experimental workshop, in a space where literature meets architecture, in a space of dialogue for creators-artisans. Collages of images and texts that are framed by constructions, projections and sounds cover the space of the exhibi-tion.
