    This Month: Teddy Sheringham

How do you measure success? By winning awards? Statistically being the best year on year?Or how about realising your greatest achievement when it matters most? In fact, for all 3Chingford lad Teddy Sheringham has been there and done it.

Edward Paul Teddy Sheringham MBE was born in Highams Park in 1966 and has lived in theChingford area for most of his life. Growing up Teddy remembers playing football for hours inthe park but only after his policeman father was happy he had finished his chores. Sheringhamplayed for local side Leytonstone & Ilford F.C. and, after having the cheek to score against themin a youth game, joined Millwall Football Club in 1982. As a professional for Millwall, Teddy wastop goal scorer in 4 of the 6 seasons he spent in South London.

This excellent form led to a 2 million transfer to Brian Cloughs Nottingham Forest in 1991

where Teddy became the first person to score a goal in the Premier League, newly created thatyear. The following season, 1992/93, Sheringham became the first winner of the inauguralPremiership Golden Boot Award for most goals scored in a year. This led to an even biggertransfer to Tottenham Hotspur where, although Teddy didnt win any awards, German legendJrgen Klinsmann called him the most intelligent strike partner Ive ever had.

In 1997 Teddy Sheringham was bought by Manchester United for 3.5 million to replace the OldTrafford legend Eric Cantona. Here the awards and statistics speak for themselves. Teddy won3 Premiership titles, the UEFA Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup, an FA Cup and theCommunity Shield. In the 1999 FA Cup Final he was Man of the Match scoring one goal andsetting up the second as Man U. won 2-0. But it is the 1999 Champions League Final thatSheringham will always be remembered. He again scored one goal and set up another deep

into injury time as Manchester United came from behind to beat Bayern Munich. This comebackwas voted the 4th greatest sporting moment of all time by Channel 4 viewers in 2002. And theChingford man was centre stage.

Teddy Sheringhams success continued after Manchester United. There was another cup finalwith Spurs, winning promotion with West Ham in 2005 and an MBE in 2007. Teddy is nowretired having won almost every trophy available but throughout everything his home hasalways been in Chingford.
