    SEEING THE AURA*****************

'Seeing the Aura' is a lecture compiled by Mr.J.J.Williamsonof The Metaphysical Research Group (which is a sectionof The Society of Metaphysicians Ltd.) and was deliv-ered at the Caxton Hall, London on May lst.1954 byDr. R.Low at a meeting organised by the Associationof Psychical Research Societies...

The purpose of this lecture is to discuss thegeneral methods of viewing the human andother aurae by means similar to those develop-ed by Dr.Kilner of St. Thomas' Hospital, Londonin 1920 and published in his book entitled,'The Human Atmosphere' .* Few developmentshave occured since that work apart perhaps, from the researches of Oscar Bagnall who checkedsome of Kilner's results and also, introduced

the newer aura dye known as pinacyanole bromide.

Also, we wish to mention the use of a new aurabiometer, which is a recently developed rad-iesthetic instrument with which one can measuresome of the characteristics of the aura beyondvisual detection. Referencered photography will be made. It is believedthat the aura of a magnet has been photographed

for the first time. The aura biometer is dueto the patient work of Dr.W.E.Benham.

classified into two main categories; theseare:

    1. That research wherein supernormalfaculties are the basis of auraperception; and,

    2. That research wherein physicalequipment is the basis of detectionand assessment of the aura.

We are not concerned with the super-normalperception of the aura in this lecture, except to mention in passing, the moreobvious relationship of clairvoyance in theuse of aura-screens and its possible causeof the misinterpretation of colours invisual aura perception through those screens.

Inasmuch as the development of any psychicfaculty is due to 'conditioning one's con-sciousness' by some special mental attitudeor 'atmosphere' so does the mental attitudeof 'seeking to see' when a person wears

aura-goggles, aids in the development of'mental seeing' or clairvoyance. Usually, the developing clairvoyant begins to seethe 'super-normal' aura and, later, theusual symbols and guides. This effect ofaura screens has been discussed by the lateMr. Boddington in his classic 'A Universityof Spiritualism'.

In view of the fact that clairvoyant percep-tion varies considerably with individuals andis subject to 'mental automatism' or uncon-trolled desires, it is evident that the morepsychic aspects of aura research are beyond

The visual methods of viewing and assessingthe human aura developed by Kilner and Bag-nall (and with which the Metaphysical ResearchGroup is now experimenting, make the *near-physical parts of the aura visible to theeye by means of special optical filters.

The filters are made of either special filmsimpregnated with suitable dyes; or, ofsolutions of the dyes in special optical cells.

Early aura screens utilised a coal-tar dyeknown as dicyanine, but the high cost (5 or$ 20:00 a gram) and the very unstable nature ofthe dye makes it impracticable for general-purpose work. Bagnall carried out considerableresearch and found another coal-tar dye knownas pinacyanole; the structure of this dye isvery similar to dicyanine except that it ismuch more stable and also, very much cheaper(15/- or $2:l5 per gram).

recent research at Archers' Court revealed amethod of making aura film using pinacyanole. This meant that aura study could be promoted insuch a manner, that anyone wishing to experiment

could afford to do so. The new-type aurafilters have a much longer 'life' than dicyaninescreens; they do not require inflammable liquidsto be held near the eyes and are generallyeasier to handle.

In addition to the basic aura filters of pina-cyanole film or of liquid dicyanine (or otheraura dyes) optical cells, there are many otherfilters and a complete range now number almost150 differing types. Other dyes requiring furthertest have appeared, such as chlorophyll, carbolanviolet, lissamine fast violet and others.

The specially constructed pinacyanole filtersare fitted to leather light-excluding gogglesand can be used for long periods without dis-comfort; also, the filters can be changed

    rapidly for various specialised tests.

The main filters required for initial work are:

    1. Pinacyanole dark shade.2. Middle, medium and light shades of

pinacyanole filter.3. A medium RED or CARMINE tint. This is used

to reduce or to completely cut out the

outer aura and to emphasise the inneraura; but the effects of this red filtercan be modified very considerably.,.

The technique developed and generally con-firmed by various researchers is this:

The subject to be observed is placedagainst a black background so that he isilluminated, without reflection, from thefront. The observer then stands with hisback to the light, a few feet away from andfacing the subject. A pair of dark-gradepinacyanole filters are worn and the operatorlooks at the sky (not at the sun) or at abright light (not fluorescent lighting) for

about a minute; he then removes the aura-goggles - if he has well-developed aura sight;or , he changes the filters for a pale shadeof pinacyanole if his aura-sight is not well-developed. The aura examination then proceeds.A faint bluish--grey mist becomes apparent;its inner edge is close to the skin of thesubject and, providing that the operator'saura vision is fairly well-developed, the

strange mist can be seen forming a rough'ovoid' and completely surrounding the body. This ovoid is the whole of the visible aura( the aura which can be se en through aura-

Having become aware of the whole aura or ovoid, the operator now replaces the light blue pina-cyanole filters, if used, with pale methylene

blue ones and looks at the subject's aura throughthe blue screens.

The ovoid now appears as two distinct sections,an inner aura is discovered roughly following thecontours of the body and about 2" - 4" away fromit; and an outer aura from 6" 15" (very variable)is found reaching to the boundaries of the ovoidas previously seen through the pale pinacyanolescreen (or, according to the aura-sight of theoperator, without goggles).

The RED filters are now worn and the aura isre-examined through them. The outer aura almostdisappears and the inner one is considerablyintensified. By adjusting the tint of the carminefilters (pale red) or the intensity of the lighton the subject, the boundary between the innerand outer auras

moves and both the outer andinner aurae can be viewed clearly and simultaneously.

The boundary of the inner and outer auras shouldbe measured when it is first observed by the useof the pale-blue methylene filters, so that themeasurement is a guide to the right combinationof red tint and illumination when the RED filtersare used.

The last step for general aura examination purp-oses, is to change the lighter shade of redscreens for DEEP carmine (or red) filters. Obviously, due to the greater difficulty in seeing through

have only to adjust the illumination so that theinner aura only is visible.

The inner aura should then be clearly enoughdefined for us to detect the texture and the'grains and lines' (or striations) upon whichassessment of the more physical factors willgenerally depend.

Further examination is a matter of using variouscolour filters; both black and white backgroundsare needed for various purposes, and the ill-umination on the subject should be adjustable. The INNER aura is composed of*bunches of linesor 'grains', with the longest line in the centreof the bunch and the shorter ones surrounding itThe boundaries of the INNER aura are determinedby the distance that these 'bunches of lines'reach when seen through a dark carmine filter.

In special cases an 'ultra-outer' aura can beseen extending beyond the 'whole' aura or ovoid;this ultra-outer aura has no definite boundaryor shape and 'leads', as it were, out and awayfrom the physical body.

The Metaphysical Research Group at Archers'Court, Hastings, England has developed a usefulgeneral-purpose technique for those commencingaura researches and who must, therefore, firstdevelop their own aura vision. Kilner statedthat at least 95% of students could see theaura; amongst our own users of aura goggleswe would say that 58% can see the aura withoutguidance other than necessarily briefinstructions, and amongst the remainder a vastproportion can be ignored-on grounds of'novelty-usage' and not serious study. Ofthose who have actually used the goggles fora short study period at Archers' Court, about90% have been successful.

The dark pinacyanole filters are issued in thefirst instance, and the student is requestedto lock through them at a light for a few

minutes. Then, still wearing the goggles, heshould seekfor the characteristic bluish-grey

mist around the hands and fingers and especiallythe 'rays' from the finger-tips of oppositehands ( see diagram). Whether or not he isimmediately successful,he should then removethe goggles and seek the aura-mist again, preferably against a dark background. He thenproceeds to lightershades of filters and repeats

the process until, eventually, he may dispensewith the aura screens completely.

    [17 minutes]

Very often, it is found, that aura vision ismost fleeting - lasting but for a few seconds, and further attempts at that time areuseless. But, the effect of the filters is

cumulative and the periods of aura-vision willbecome longer until they are virtually contin-uous.

However, Kilner advises that every operatorshould 're-sensitise' the eyes by lookingthrough a dark aura-screen for about a minute, before any aura examination; whether aura-vision is well developed or not! Examination

can then be continued either without goggleswith the pale-blue pinacyanole screens in thecase of weak aura-vision, or with *colouredscreens.

When the operator can see the aura around thehands, arms, head and other exposed parts ofthe body; not forgetting the 'rays' between

the finger-tips of opposed hands; he shouldthen obtain the RED (outer-aura cancellation)filters and observe the aura through them.

Variations in the illumination on the hands, face, arms and so on, will enable him todifferentiate between the outer and inneraura. The way is now clear for him to proceedwith the full technique as, already discussed.

    STRANGE AURA RAYS

    Directedconsciousness.

Many investigators have been intrigued by the

strange beams of 'light' or RAYS that are oftenseen emerging from (or going to) the body. Theyseem to shoot off into space, passing throughthe various auras and, according to Kilner, theyalways remain straight, never being curved. Theyare considered to be of importance by theResearch Group because the special fundamentalconditions require to produce ray-like forms, especially in the physical sense, give many clues

to the nature of the aura-rays and their possiblemode of control: Many clairvoyants have seenthese rays shooting from members of a circle inthe seance-room; or from person to person; or,in some cases from a person to an object in theroom. Later, questions after the seance revealedthat the person THOUGHT about the object orperson contacted by the rays, during the seanceand at the same time as seen by the clairvoyant!

Kilner confirms that rays in the aura can be*controlled by thought.

It would seem, from work in the Research Group'spsychic department, that these strange rays area result of DIRECTED CONSCIOUSNESS; that is tosay, when a person DESIRES to know something, hemakes direct contact with that 'thing' orperson by means of these strange forces.

Further, the necessary contact and requiredinformation is conveyed along the beams of 'aura-energy' back to him! This is a startlingthought-- which is well supported by data from

ies requires that.a 'ray' reaches out andfinds the subject with whom communication isdesired.

This is the more theoretical conclusion toobserved facts; what of more physical, evidenceto support them? These photographs (which Iill pass round the audience,) were taken by

a commercial photographer in the normal courseof his daily work; they were rejected as'faulty' but fortunately for our researchthe photographer recognised their 'strangeness'and sent them to the Group for examination.

The photographs show an amateur pianist playingby 'ear' - the first photograph is normaland was taken just as the pianist commencedto play and, we may believe, had not yet 'made

contact' with his source of inspiration.About four seconds later a second picture wastaken and, later, a third and so on. Thesecond picture is very misty, as would be thecase when one views a light through a fog.Well within the edges of the film and 'beaming'onto the pianist is a converging beam of'light' - a beam which we may suppose to bean 'inspirational ray' connecting the pianist

    to some strange source.

The third photograph shows the same beam andthe same 'mistiness' or 'fog'; but, there is

is beyond the scope of this lecture and moreconcerned with the dimensional nature of thephenomena as revealed by the study of the newmetaphysical science (vid. Dimensional trans-

The fact that the ray originates at a positionwhich approximates to the position or boundaryof the outer-aura when expanded (possibly theultra-outer aura of Kilner) suggests that theenergies of the ray and that of the human aura lcombining together produced light that Waswithin the*sensitivity range of the photograph-

(The faces are blanked out on the photographsfor obvious reasons; the person did not knowthat he was being inspired and that the wayof inspiration was being photographed!)

*Some doubt exists as to which end of the visiblespectrum the aura radiations occupy: the infra-red or the ultra-violet? Both Kilner andBagnall thought that there was a second 'semi-supernormal spectrum' which the eye could see in itsstrange non-mixing colour ranges when properlyadjusted.

This 'new' spectrum is in doubt and other methodsof research seem to support the view that it isnot so much the high-frequency end of the spectrum(the ultra-violet), but rather the infra-redregion wherein the aura radiation mainly lies.Investigation of the infra-red was easiest forour Group, so we carried out that mode of researchas a first issue; ultra-violet investigation ismuch more difficult and as soon as equipment canbe gained we will examine this also.

    * Photo-electric studies have proven that the inner aura isdefinitely electro-magnetic in nature (but, of course, cannotprove anything beyond the dimensions of the modes of detection(i.e. photo-electric) and the possible existence of non-electro-magnetic energy cannot be discounted) and the following spectralbands have been recorded: 2480, 2530, 2650, 2700, 2800, 2890,3020, 3120, 3340 and 3650 All lines are granular in nature.

In an attempt to discover to which of thetwo extremes in visual perception, we shoulddirect our attention, the newly developed aurabiometer of Dr. W.E.Benham was utilised.

Dr Benham found that light of variouscolours falling onto the zero line of theinstrument caused a series of waves to appear

on its scale and that for each colour a def-inite series of readings occured. Thereforethe aura biometer could be used as an extra-special kind of radiation wave-measuringinstrument, which although not so accurate asthe modern spectroscope was able to give avastly wider range of readings - right downinto the deep infra-red, and analysis ofwhich, it is believed, will be rich in data.

Human radiations reaching the instrumentindicated that there were strong bands ofenergy in the infra-red regions and calculationwhich compared with the wavelengths of lightused to calibrate it, suggested that the humanaura radiated at about 9300 (Angstrom degrees).Obviously if we were to photograph the aurawe had to find a film which was sensitive

enough to enable an image to be produced andwhose frequency response reached to 9300.

Somewhat hopefully, w e sought to use thetools and data available and after a series

of straight visual tests with aura screenswe decided that a very powerful horse-shoemagnet would be the best source of a non-orgenic aura. The magnetic aura could beseen by members of the Group and a reporton it was published in the METAPHYSICALDIGEST ( volume 1. No: 4. 1954).

A series of infra-red photographs was then

taken and as a result we have gained a dim,but quite obvious picture of the aura ofmagnetism from straight pole-pieces and also following the familiar curvedpattern between two poles. More experimentsare necessary under various conditions - suchas photographing the magnetic aura in avacuum; trying the effect of electric fieldsand so on.

    INCREASING THE AURA ENERGY

A further special experiment revealed and seemedto confirm strange facts mentioned in the lateMr. Boddington's classic work,'The University ofSpiritualism'.

Ultra-violet radiation was said to 'over-charge'the human aura so that the surplus energy wasviolently 'thrown-off' when the source of theradiation was extinguished. A clairvoyant or

one developed in the use of aura-screens couldsee flashing streams of brilliant sparks flashingoff the finger-tips and and other exposed pointsof the body.

We directed a very powerful arc-light onto thebody of the subject. Immediately the arc wasswitched off, visual observation was carried outthrough a large liquid filter-cell containing analcoholic (methyl alcohol) solution of pinacyanolebromide. Streams of vivid violet sparks wereseen to rush from the finger-tips of the subjectand to disappear into space. The phenomenonlasted for about 1 1/2 seconds and could not be

All diagnostic and medical work is beyond thescope of this lecture. Generally, the presenceof dark or dim patches, the breakdown of

observed structures and other distortions ofthe aura indicate nervous disabilities. Veryoften, it is found that the onset of a physicalillness is indicated a long while before anyphysical symptoms occur by dark patches in theaura, this seeming to substantiate the theorythat all illness is, in the first instance, dueto mental or psychological distortions.

Modification of the aura has been observed byvisual methods, especially in cases of ultra-violet energising tests (refer to 41.42.).Thus, a scientific basis for chromotherapyis at once apparent and the examination of theaura before, during and after specific colourray energising may well be a field rich inhealing value.

'Aura perception ray projection' is a phrasesuggesting special colour projectors which, acting in the same manner as aura screens, willmake inspirational rays, aurae etc., and, ofcourse, thought and spiritforms visible. Theunderlying principle of the research is thatof 'heterodyning'.

From the more 'transcendental' spheres theaura appears in a far more wonderful mannerthan any purely physical conditioning couldmake apparent; the full range of colours anddelicate shades being gloriously apparent. Iti id t th t thi f f i i

'seeing' or aura clairvoyance a whole rangeof powers are revealed.

Edgar Cayce, the American healer, related theexperience of a lady friend. She was in adepartment store and had signalled for the lift. When it arrived and she was about to enter shefelt suddenly repelled and allowed the lift toproceed without her; the occupants of the lifthad no aurae! As she turned to re-examinesome bright red sweaters the lift-cable mapped, the car fell and all the occupants were killed!

The conclusion is obvious; the higher auraedisappear around the human body when death isimminent. Whilst this does not tell us whetherthe lady's aura would have disappeared if shehad not noticed the ill-omens and had enteredthe lift, it does suggest that a high aura visionmight save many from dangerous situations andindeed, would be an adjunct to continuouspsychic perception. The new metaphysics appliedto mental energy studies (ref. METAPHYSICALDIGEST. Vol: 2. onwards) show a clear way tohigher aura vision. The first steps are, however to develop aura vision by physical meansand to know that this automatically causes thehigher aura-vision to commence development.Proper exercises and a right. philosophy doesthe rest.

The human aura (as detected by photo-electric methods) is amixture of the Protti effect,(or the production of luminescentphenomena from a mixture of oxidising processes in living tissueand of the Russel effect ( or phosphorescent phenomena emittingelectro-magnetic radiation from certain compounds (e.g. sterolsin the skin) - especially so after irradiation by ultra-violetlight from the sun, 'Milky Way', or soft X-ray of metals or

metallic salts - (refer to the arc-lamp experiment). Allspectral lines observed are granular in nature, probably due toemulsion-like constitution of phosphorescent substances. Thecase of sterol is established in this respect. (Data due toDr. Muftic: M.S.M.(P)).
