Singulated Planting Overview

The information in this section covers important setupand checking information that applies to the Air-Pro®

Meter when planting at one seed per disk cell, using theIRC drive.

Singulated planting employs the seed monitor in:

• Individual Row Control mode.

Singulated Rate Setting Summary1. For your crop, determine your intended population,

in seeds/acre or seeds/hectare. If you know only theseed spacing or population in pounds/acre or kg/acre, consult the charts on page 1 through page 4.

2. For your crop, population and desired field speed, verify the suitability and setup of your seed disk.

3. Set meter rate. See page 12 for more information.

4. Set initial seed inlet shutter per seed rate chart.Set initial meter pressurization per page 8, 9.

5. Verify your planting rate per the instructions at:“Checking Planting Rate” on page 11. If the resultsare consistent with your setup, plant the crop.

Population Reference InformationSeeds per UnitIf only weight (pounds/acre or kilograms/hectare) isknown, obtain the population count by multiplying theweight by the “Kernels per pound” value from the seedcontainer.

Seed SpacingIf only seed spacing is known, use the tables on the nextfive pages to determine population.

Meter PressurizationRefer to the Operator Manual for the procedure for finetuning meter pressurization.

Start with pressures from page 9 and page 10, which arebased on crop, and for corn, seed shape and density.

Note: These are suggested initial (starting) pressures. Use the seed monitor console to adjust them up or down per the procedure in the YP1625A Operator Manual.

Corn: Reading a Pressure Chart (below, next page)1. Pick the chart based on seed shape (flat, round).

Example: large round corn

2. Pick a line based on seed size (large, small).Example: the right line below

3. Find the seed density on the bottom scale.Example: 1260 seeds/pound

4. Read the suggested starting pressure on the left scale, where the line (example shown as dotted gray) intersects the density.Example: 3.4 inches of water

WSMT3 (Version 3) Planters Table of Contents Planting Rate

Planting Rate

Singulated seed charts are based on cleaned and sizedseed singulated with the recommended disk. Extremeseed size variations and foreign material can affect theplanting rate.

Any material difference between chart and field ratesimplies a mechanical malfunction, a planter setup error, unsuitable planting conditions (such as excessive tireslippage) or extremely worn planter components. Youcan verify your setup and planter performance bymeasuring seed placement and spacing over a relativelyshort distance.

The column to the right provides example data for a ratecheck.

Checking Singulated Rates

For metric singulated rate information, see page 37.

1. Determine the sample distance to check. Find yourrow spacing in the table at right.

2. Note the number of rows to sample. Adjust theplanting depth to a shallow setting on one or twooutside rows (per table). Tie up the press wheel armswith wire or bungee to prevent furrow closure.

3. For populations above 100 000 seeds/acre, use asample size of 1/1000th acre.

For populations below 100 000 seeds/acre, use asample size of 1/200th acre.

4. Configure the planter for the chart rate, selecting therate on the seed monitor.

5. Plant at the desired planting speed for slightly morethan the computed sample run length.

6. Measure off the sample distance, balanced inbetween where seeding started and stopped.

7. Count the number of seeds over the distancemeasured. Also note the consistency of the seedspacing.

8. Compute the rate for a full acre or hectare.

For a 1/1000th sample, multiply the counted seedsby 1000.

For a 1/200th sample, multiply the counted seeds by200.

9. If the field and chart rates vary by more than a fewpercent, re-check planter setup, including meter diskor cell count, air system, tire size, tire pressures, sprocket or hydraulic drive setup, chain slack, etc. Ifseed spacing is irregular, this suggests a seeddelivery problem, and not a rate setup problem.

10. While planting, pay attention to the seed monitor. Inaddition to confirming the single-row furrow check, itwill also provide field rate data on all the other rows, and alert you to any irregularities or stoppages.

Monitor ConfigurationIRC drive meter rate is set directly on the seed monitor inthe tractor. Consult the monitor manual for detailedinstructions, which may vary slightly over time withfirmware updates to the monitor system.

Enter/update your planter configuration (width/row-count,row pattern, disk cell count, etc.). Once entered, specifythe population directly in thousand seeds/acre orthousand seeds/ha.

Enter meter RPM limits for your disk.

For consistent results, and least meter wear, do notexceed the recommended ground speed.

For step 1 through step 4, any needed data not providedin this manual can be found in one or more of:Planter Operator Manual

Refer to the DICKEY-john® IntelliAg®Planter/Drill ControlOperator’s Manual for details on setup item.

The monitor must be in User Level 2 to change someof these parameters.

1. For a crop not previously planted with this planter, create a “Material Name” for the crop. Selecting anamed material is a required step in later screens.

2. Verify, and as needed setup or update the “Material”record for the singulated seed to be planted.

The “Material / Data Required” table lists theparameters that need to be reviewed or set. <anglebracket> values are your choice/preference when notfrom meter rpm chart.

3. Count rows individually for “# Seed Rows”. A twinpair (if both openers are in use) counts as 2 rows.“Channel Width” is swath.

4. In the Material Library screen, makes sure that theMaterial (SOYBEANS in our example) is assigned tothe Channel (CH 1 in our example) which controlsthe planter’s drive.

5. Switch the seed monitor from Setup/Configurationmode to Operate mode. Load seed. Move theplanter to the field.

WSMT3 (Version 3) Planters Table of Contents Dry Fertilizer

Dry Fertilizer

The dry fertilizer option is driven by a ground contactwheel and fertilizer rate is independent of seed rate.Fertilizer rate is set by adjusting sprocket configurationson the fertilizer ground drive assembly.

Dry Fertilizer Rate Adjustment Make field checks to assure you are applying

fertilizer at the desired rate. Fertilizer applicationrates can vary from the weights in the charts.

Use the following steps to adjust the rate at which yourmachine applies fertilizer.

1. Adjust for the fertilizer density.

2. Consult the fertilizer rate charts.

3. Install the driving and driven sprockets called out inthe chart.

Fertilizer Density AdjustmentThe fertilizer meter rate charts are based on fertilizer witha density of 65lb/ft3 (1.04 kg/liter). If you are applyingfertilizer of a different density, use the following chart toconvert application rate.

Use the charts’ rates to determine the initial sprocketsettings. If the rate measured in calibration varies fromthe desired field rate by more than a few percent, applythe error percentage to the chart’s rate, and pick a newsprocket pairing based on that.

WSMT3 (Version 3) Planters Table of Contents Liquid Fertilizer

Liquid Fertilizer

The liquid fertilizer option uses a CDS-John Blue® pistonpump or Ace Hydraulic. For pump operation and pumpmaintenance refer to the Planter Operator manual andCDS-John Blue® pump manual. The CDS-John Blue®

manual is supplied in the liquid fertilizer option package.

The pump is driven by a ground contact wheel, andfertilizer rate is independent of seed rate. Fertilizer rate isset by a pump dial and a sprocket on the ground driveassembly.

Great Plains recommends checking with your localAgronomist as soil conditions vary. Soil conditions inyour area may need lesser or more amounts offertilizer than represented in these charts. Do notexceed 12 gallons/acre (112 liters/ha) in any case.

Always remove pump drive chain when not in use.Do not operate planter pump when not applyingmaterial.

Orifice Size Does Not Control Rate:Orifice size is only used to create 15-to-65 psi back pressure toprovide even flow between rows. Set application rate ingallons per acre using pump drive chart.

Orifice Plate SelectionIn general, the orifice needs to be small enough to createat least 15 psi of pressure in the manifold but largeenough to prevent the manifold pressure from exceeding85 psi.

The minimum pressure is required to even out the flow offertilizer between rows. To reduce orifice plugging andpump wear, use the largest orifice practical for yourfertilizer application rate.

The best pressure range to maintain is 15-to-40 psi toensure optimum distribution while minimizing leakage.

Hydraulic Drive Fertilizer RateRefer to DICKEY-john IntelliAg PDC User 2 & 3 Manualto complete set up and run through Valve and K-Factorcalibrations.

Ground Drive Fertilizer Rate

Coarse rate is set by a single “driving” sprocket on theground drive assembly. Fine rate is set on a dial (settinghub) at the pump , using a tool supplied with the pump.

Material Loss / Pump Damage Risks:Disconnect chain or remove sprocket when not intending to apply material. Contact wheel and chain system operate whenever the planter is lowered and in motion. If planting without fertilizing, the pump must not be allowed to run dry.

Rate settings may be established in any of three ways:

• the table on the next page,

• the slide chart provided with the pump, or;

• a calculator on the CDS-John Blue® web site(www.cds-johnblue.com)

1. Check plumbing setup. See “Setting Relief Valve”and “Strainer” in the Operator Manual.

2. Determine Driving sprocket (15T or 47T) required fromtable, slide chart or web calculator. If this sprocket isalready installed on driven shaft, skip to step 6.Otherwise, to change sprocket, continue with step 3.

3. Loosen idler , and remove chain from lowerjackshaft .

4. Select the new sprocket from the storage shaft .Remove the pins, and exchange sprockets. Store theprevious sprocket on the storage shaft.

5. Remount the chain . Re-engage idler , tighteningso that the longest span of the chain has 1/4 inch (6 mm) of slack.

6. Use the box-wrench end of the JohnBlue 115681-01tool, and loosen the setting pointer nut .

7. Use the other end of the tool to rotate the dial tothe setting determined by table, slide chart or web.

8. Re-tighten pointer nut.

Orifice PlateThe orifice needs to be small enough to create enoughpressure in the manifold to operate the check valves, but notso much that the system dumps product at the relief valve.

The recommend operating pressure is 15 to 40 psi.

Using an orifice size too large can result in unequal flowat rows, intermittent flow, and flow stoppage at rowswhere pressure falls below the 8 psi required to open theclamp check valve. Using a size too small can causeexcess back-pressure resulting in material dumping atthe relief valve.

Use the same size at all active rows.

Agricultural Chemical Hazard:Wear protective gloves when changing orifice plates andstrainer screens. Consult material manufacturer or supplierdocuments for proper handling and steps to take if skin contactoccurs.

To install the orifice plates:

1. Remove the nozzle cap (1).

Slide Chart - Liquid Fertilizer RateThe CDS-John Blue LM-1255 pump includes a slidechart for calculating pump settings.

To make the scales on this chart easier to use, this pageprovides adjusted data values. These adjusted valuesproduce results within 0.5% of the actual sprocketcombinations and loaded radius values.

Determine your desired application rate in gallons peracre. If you need to set metric rates, use theCDS-John Blue web calculator.

On the slide chart:

1. Move the upper sliding scale to align the “StandardSprocket Combinations” 24 to 50 or 16 to 60 with thecorresponding LOADED RADIUS 30 or 10,respectively. Ignore the “Sprocket Ratio” scale.

NOTE:The actual LOADED RADIUS of the ground drivewheel is 11.8 inch, which is difficult to read on thechart. The actual net SPROCKET RATIO for lowrange is 1.33, which is off-scale on the chart. Theactual net ratio for high range is 4.18, which isdifficult to match up with 11.8.

2. Use the lower sliding scale to align swath width ofyour planter under the arrow. To determine yourplanter’s swath width, multiply the machine’s rowspacing distance by the number of rows. If you areunsure of either your machine’s row spacing or rowcount, then refer to your operator manual for moreinformation.

3. Use the “LM-1255 Pump” scale to find your desiredapplication rate. Ignore the “L-4600 Pump” scale.

Inputing this information into the slide chart will provideyou with a pump setting for your desired rate.

Equipment Damage Risk:Plant at or below 8 mph (13 km/h) with the 47T Drivingsprocket installed. The pump is rated for 450 rpm maximum, which is exceeded at and above 9 mph (14 km/h).

Charts - Liquid Fertilizer RateThese charts show pre-computed application rates foreach half step of pump setting. If a rate shown issufficiently close to your desired field rate, use thetransmission sprocket and pump setting values toconfigure your planter.

If you need to set metric rates, use the CDS-John Blueweb calculator (see page 127).

If using the slide chart or web methods to set your rate, use the charts to quickly determine whether you needthe Low or High Range transmission sprocket paring.

Equipment Damage Risk:Plant at or below 8.8 mph (14 kph) with the standard high ratesprockets installed. The pump is rated for 550 rpm maximum, which is exceeded at and above 8.9 mph.

Setting Relief ValveA relief valve is plumbed after the pump outlet to protectthe manifold and pump from excessive pressure. Anyproduct that dumps over the relief valve will dischargefrom the dump line .

To set relief valve:

Refer to Figure 181. Unlock plastic jam nut from relief valve knob .

2. Unscrew knob clockwise until it loses contact withinternal spring.

3. Screw knob counterclockwise two turns. Start at thissetting.

4. Observe manifold gauge . Watch for relief valvedischarge while operating in the field.

5. If valve is dumping product and gauge reads under65 psi, stop tractor and turn knob clockwise (lookingdown) 1/4 turn. Continue operating at normal fieldspeed. Repeat this step as needed until no productis discharged from relief valve.

6. If pressure gauge reads above 65 psi, change to alarger orifice. Go to step 2. Repeat steps.

StrainerRefer to Figure 3A Banjo brand strainer is supplied with the fertilizer pumpoption. It is plumbed before the pump. The standard80 mesh screen should be suitable for mostapplications. Other screen sizes are available from BanjoCorporation.

Agricultural Chemical Hazard:Wear protective gloves when changing screens.

If changing screen sizes, keep in mind the following.

• A smaller mesh (100) will keep very small manifold orifice plates from plugging so often. However, the screen will have to be cleaned more often.

• A larger mesh (50) or (30) will pass more material but should only be considered when using large manifold orifice plates.

• A plugged or partially plugged screen will starve the pump resulting in a reduced application rate.

• Mesh sizes: (Smallest) 100, 80, 50, 30 (Largest)

Seed Lubricants

Seed Lubricants

Air-Pro® Meters (all seeds)Ezee Glide Plus Talc+Graphite Mix

Ezee Glide Plus LubricantTo maximize performance of Great Plains metering systems,it is imperative to use only “Ezee Glide Plus” lubricant. “EzeeGlide Plus” Talc-Graphite lubricant is mandatory for all seeds, especially treated or inoculated seed. Thorough mixing ofseed and added lubricant is required.

Recommended usage:

For clean seeds other than milo, cotton, and sunflowerssprinkle one cup of Ezee Glide Plus Talc per 4 bushels orunits (170 ml per 100 liters) of seed.

For milo, cotton, and sunflowers double the application toone cup (or more) per 2 bushels or units (335 ml per100 liters) of seed.

For canola or mustard, 1 cup (240 ml) per 30 pound(13.6 kg) bag is a minimum starting value. Mix the seedlubricant early during the seed loading. Use morelubricant in extremely dry conditions.

Adjust this rate as necessary so all seeds becomecoated while avoiding an accumulation of lubricant in thebottom of the hopper.

For seed with excessive treatment, or for humid plantingenvironments, increase the rate as needed for smoothmeter operation.

Irritation and Chronic Exposure Hazard:Wear gloves. DO NOT use hands or any part of your body to mix seed lubricant. Wear a respirator when transferring and mixing. Avoid breathing lubricant dust. Not an acute hazard. May cause mechanical eye or skin irritation in high concentrations. As with all mineral spills, minimize dusting during clean-up. Prolonged inhalation may cause lung injury. Product can become slippery when wet.
