“…but they measuring them-selves by themselves, andcomparing themselves amongthemselves, are not wise.”(II Corinthians 10:12) Accord-ing to this passage, there is a
problem with evaluating oneself by comparisons to others. It presumes that your views and conduct are correct on the basis andto the degree that other people think you are OK.
Not long ago, a couple of U.S. soldiers administered some “streetjustice” to an Afghani police commander whom they had gotten wordhad been raping a young boy regularly. Although this commanderwalked away from the encounter, these soldiers were subsequentlydisciplined, effectively ending their military careers. This case comeson the heels of several incidents of U.S. service members who saythey were retaliated against after standing up to Afghan child rapists. They had been told that this pedophilia is “cultural” and were admonished by superiors not to report cases of child abuse.
But “culture”, friend, is another word for how everyone around usthinks. By the measurement of at least some of the Afghani male pop-ulation, that police commander was an OK guy, but that is the problemwith cultural relativism. He still wasnʼt OK. There is a measure of rightand wrong that transcends culture for both life and eternity. Thatmeasure will be plain “in the day when God shall judge the secrets ofmen by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.” (Romans 2:16)

I CANʼT IMAGINE GOING TO PENNSYLVANIA WITHOUT VISITING AND EXTENSIVELY TOURING PHILADELPHIA, THE BIRTHPLACE OF OUR NATION,
and seeing and hearing all about those involved, as well as seeing and touring brandnew attractions. In fact, this trip was planned in September, but I have been waiting on
contracts with new venues. I never announce or advertise trips without having everything completed. But knew you would need to think ahead for vacation time.
IN ADDITION TO PHILADELPHIA, I WILL BE TAKING YOU TO LANCASTER AND THE BEAUTIFUL BIBLICAL THEATER PRESENTATION OF “SAMSON.” We have been there many times before and will tour the town and countryside
with a local guide.
OUR VISIT TO HERSHEY will include more than a candy store. Rather, I want to share the story of Milton Hershey, one of our nationʼs greatest unsung heroes.
He established an orphanage for needy children, and not only cared for them, but educated (and his foundation still does) literally thousands all the way through college,
entirely through his own funding. He built the town and the attractions for the employees of his candy factory, as well as their families. A visit to Founderʼs Hall with
a local guide shares this story of a man who lived his life caring about others.
I SHOULD HAVE ALL DETAILS BY NEXT WEEK. WATCH THIS SPACE, AND THEN CALL FOR RESERVATIONS AND FLYERS WITH COMPLETE ITINERARIES

TIP-OFF SHOPPING GUIDE • HILLSDALE • (517) 437-7351 www.tipoffonline.com December 7, 2015 • Page 9
I seemed to have reached a time of settling. It all startedwhen I couldnʼt reach some boxes filled with Christmas dec-orations. Then, when I did finally wrestle them down from theshelf, I decided I had better take a quick nap. Geez – I mustbe getting old. And I realized I might as well admit it, and ac-cept it. But then, I opened my day planner for the last of thisyear and lots of blank pages for next year, and I saw it. Isquinted at the tiny letters at the bottom of the page. It was aquote by C. S. Lewis, and it said, “You are never too old toset another goal or to dream a new dream.”
All of a sudden, nap time didnʼt seem so important. AndI wondered what caused him to think that thought and writeit down. He must have, at some time, wondered if it was timeto hang it up, to settle for a nap and file ambitions away foranother day.
Too old has to be a matter of opinion and attitude. Ipicked out the top layer of decorations and decided they wereall worth keeping, even though they are part of an accumula-tion of well over sixty years. Why had I saved them, and as Istarted hanging them up, I remembered the occasion whenthey were new. That was reason enough; the memories cameflooding back and with each, there was a new beginning ofone thing and another. Layer after layer represented a newgoal, a new dream and the fulfillment of that particular dreamof things to come.
I remember another quote that simply said, “If you hangaround long enough, everything is new again.” And I imme-diately started sorting the old with the new and realized thatyou canʼt have one without the other, whether it is a goal or adream or just the excitement of facing another day.
Goals change and sometimes the bar has to be set justa tad lower. Dreams, on the other hand, require little morethan just planning in your mind, and are there for us to accept, decline, or settle for less – but can remain as long as we wantthem to and remember to haul them out occasionally. Myproblem of late is I have more plans than empty days on thecalendar. Another thing I read once, was a Japanese proverbthat said, “Opportunities are like sunsets; if you wait too long, you run the chance of missing them.”
Well, Iʼm not about to let too many of either go by justbecause I think I have to take another nap. And while it is waytoo early to be thinking about New Yearʼs resolutions, I havedecided to start over with a new set of goals based on newdreams. Neither require more than just having the gumptionto start over, or rather, make the very most of just keep onkeeping on. Utilizing the past experiences, dressed up withthe new – or rather, renewed- it sounds like fun, and I hadbetter get busy. Sort of like the little train that said I think Ican, I think I can, I think I can. We all can, and should, andwasting time is a shameful thing. Time and living and caringand sharing are more important than ever when we get older.Oh, sure, we have to be realistic about it – to a point. Physicalhandicaps require changing some goals and dreams, but giv-ing up instead of using up is settling – and I, for one, canʼt dothat, anymore than I can throw away memories found inboxes and the corners of my mind. And all seem to be tellingme to at least try another goal, dream another dream, andthank God for another day.
I heard a news reporter on TV say that in another coupleof years, medicine discoveries may very well result in all ofus living well past a hundred. Good grief, I have a lot to do!

You are encouraged to get
involved!
You can get involved in several ways:
•Volunteer to work at the concessions
stands
•Volunteer to work at the cash raffle
•Volunteer to work at events
(scorekeeper, chain gang, ticket taker,
timer, etc.)
•Attend JABA meetings
•Offer ideas (we are always open to new
ideas!)
Here are some reasons you should
join JABA:
JABA is a way to stay involved in the
school and the community.
You don’t have to be the parent of an
athlete to get involved.
You can help provide the sports program
with needed equipment.
Students who participate in an
extracurricular activity have a lower
class failure rate.
You help the Jonesville athletes become
better.
You can make a difference!
Jonesville Athletic Boosters Association
The purpose of JABA is to assist the Jonesville School District Athletic Department by
providing off budget accessories and aid in the development of athletic performance of
Jonesville Community School students. We want to make every student-athletes’
experience the best that it can be. Please join us!
