THE WRIGHT WORD PAGE 3 August 2020

Greetings Members,

To say this is an unprecedented time would be an understatement. Our nation, our military, our families, and we ourselves are facing a challenge the likes of which has not been seen in a long time. Of course, this has extended to the Wright-Patterson Officers' Spouses’ Club as well. This year the WPOSC finds itself inventing novel means and methods to meet the needs of our members and communi-ty while ensuring the continued safety of both. Like the rest of our great nation, we are resilient, we are resourceful, and we are ready to meet the challenges of 2020 head-on and persevere for the sake of our Air Force family. Through hard work, problem-solving, and sheer will, your 2020 WPOSC Board of Governors plans to provide each and every one of you with the philanthropic, social, and com-munity fulfillment that has kept our organization a vital part of the Wright-Patt community for over 75 years. But none of the challeng-es we face or the goals we aspire to can be met without you. The WPOSC needs you now more than ever. I have every confidence that if you join us this year as you have in years past, 2020 will be as engaging and memorable as any other. Rest assured that as your president, I will always strive to do what is best for the members of the WPOSC and prepare us for the next 75 years of legacy.

Jamika Mullen WPOSC President 2020-2021

Antiques Societé Chairman: Elizabeth Clark Co Chair: Kathy Cohrs This activity has been meeting each month since 1958 (summer excluded) for lunch and a pro-gram. We have speakers who talk about a variety of subjects, so we get a small history lesson as a bonus. We take a tour in the spring to a historical museum, home, farm, etc. in Ohio or perhaps In-diana. Since we typically meet in the Wright-Patterson Club and it is presently closed, we have made tenta-tive plans for our September luncheon. We would like to meet Friday September 25th in the club-house at The Woods of Beavercreek (2161 Hidden Woods Blvd). Each person is asked to come at 11:30 and bring their own lunch and drink, so the only cost would be the usual $2 for a chance to win an antique door prize. Due to the Coronavirus we will follow the OSC protocols for safety. There is plenty of room to spread apart. Evelyn Pelan has agreed to present her program on the history of hangers which was canceled in March due to the closing of the club and all OSC activities. We need everyone to RSVP so we know how to set up the clubhouse. Hopefully, by the end of September the virus will have slowed enough so that we can make this luncheon a reality. Skylarks 2020 Fall Rehearsals and Winter Program

Cancelled due to Covid 19

Normally, we plan two programs each year; one in early winter and a second in the spring. However, given the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of COVID 19 we have de-cided to cancel our 2020 winter program. As singers we need to be close to each other to blend our voices properly. This means we cannot wear masks or maintain social distanc-ing. There’s also research that shows singing is one of the most dangerous things you can do during the pandemic. We will reevaluate the situation in January to see if we can pro-

ceed safely with a 2021 spring program and rehearsals.

Welcome! The International Spouses Group is an active group within the Officers' Spouse' Club. Our members represent countries from every continent on the globe. Our members are spouses of International, US military and Civilian Servants stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB, and other active and retired military living locally. We don't have membership fees, as our main funding is through our participation in the International Fair, which occurs in April. From this, we also provide college scholarships to an active, eligible International member and/or their college-bound dependent once a year. Scholarship recipients are chosen by an independent board of judges. The meetings provide the opportunity for exciting and lasting friendships, while allowing us to experience both the uniqueness and similarities of all cultures. We volunteer to provide food from our native countries during every gathering and participate in activities, we explore the surrounding areas on outings and help each other and the community in various ways. Children and family members are always welcome. We normally meet the first Friday of every month. We welcome you and look forward to seeing you at our next meeting. Inma and Misa (Chair and Co-Chairs) For scholarship eligibility purposes, an active member is a member who has attended a minimum of 6 of the ISG meetings or activities above, in the schol-arship calendar year (2020 Scholarship: March 2020 – March 2021). Further scholarship information will be published in December

In June of 1972, Col. Bernie Bass, director of the Air Force Museum, realized a need for volunteers and also an opportunity for the Offic-ers’ Wives Club (OWC) to be involved at the Museum. He requested assistance from the OWC to provide instructive and informational tours to the scheduled school groups arriving at the museum for field trips. The response to this request was overwhelming with more than 50 OWC members volunteering for this assignment. After attending several informational training sessions, the OWC Museum Guides were ready to meet the challenge of leading the school children through the museum. These ladies were the first volunteers at the museum, and at that time, there was no Education Division or Volunteer program. Here we are, almost 50 years later and still guiding students through the museum.

The Museum Guides were ready to take on more challenges. In 1979, Col. Richard Upstrom, Museum Director, asked if the OWC Guides would be interested in a summer job. The proposed job would involve touring visitors through the restoration facility. After a short training, these tours began in June 1981 with three volunteer guides and 30 visitors. We had the unique privilege to share the restoration of two memora-ble B-17’s, both with honored WWII records; Memphis Belle and the Swoose. In 2017 our members again adapted when tours inside the restora-tion facility were replaced with Glimpse Behind the Scenes Tours. Using the technology inside the Space STEM node in the 4th building visitors can view restoration details from inside the museum. Behind the Scenes (GBS) tours are offered every first and third Friday throughout the year.

The mission of the OWC guides is continually changing. In the spring of 1996, a Storytime program was established for three to five year olds. A few short stories centering on aviation or space are read, and the visit ends with a tour. Just imagine the amazement of the youngest visi-tors to the museum as they view some of the largest airplanes displayed such as the B-52.

Some Guides are trained to tour visitors who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, or those with special needs, each requiring a different method of conducting the tour. For touring the visually impaired visitors, we must wear white gloves in order to explore the aircraft. Wearing the gloves keeps the oils from the hands off the aircraft. We are allowed to enter some of the display areas to conduct the “touch tour”. Touring in this manner allows the visually impaired to experience the wonders of the Museum in a different manner as a unique learning experience.

Training for OSC guides is an ongoing process. There are at least six E & T (Enrichment and Training) sessions scheduled, usually from Sep-tember to March. These sessions include invited lecturers, visits to aviation sites, and there was one special trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Last year our E&Ts included the Apollo exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center and private tours of the Wright Brothers National Museum and the Miami Valley Veteran’s Museum.

The Dayton Ohio area has a rich aviation history. What a privilege to share the “stories” of the NMUSAF with visitors from around the world. The next time you see volunteers in blue “pinnies” with airplane pins attached, ask them about the meaning of the pins. Each pin is earned for hours dedicated to the program or special duties within the program. We are honored to be part of this amazing museum for 40 years and take pride in being able to relate the many stories of courage and honor which are depicted through the displays in the museum.

The Museum is currently open but due to Covid-19, tours at the museum and our Enrichment & Training sessions are temporarily cancelled. We will reevaluate conditions in January.
