The Wabash Valley Community Foundation’s Consultant Bank offers local experts as free consultants to assist local nonprofit organizations in building their skills in managing their organizations and delivering their services. Recognizing the vast majority of nonprofit organizations in our communities work on very limited budgets, The Consultant Bank is a resource from which local nonprofits can access consulting services free of charge. As local nonprofit organizations become stronger, more efficient and more sustainable, so do the communities in which they serve, said Kelli Miller, Program Director for the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. The Consultant Bank will enable nonprofit organizations to better meet their missions and goals in serving our communities. The Consultant Bank is comprised of respected professionals who volunteer to help guide organizations toward greater capacity. No prior consultant experience is necessary–simply a willingness to share what the consultant knows about their area(s) of expertise and skill set. Each consultant is encouraged to donate up to 12 hours per year to be allotted in limited increments. Once The Consultant Bank is implemented, nonprofit organizations in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties may request consulting services in increments of 1-3 hours (up to 4 hours annually) at no cost. Though the Consultant Bank is still in its early stages, Miller says she has already received requests from both volunteer consultants and nonprofit organizations interested in learning more about how to participate. There is a sincere desire to help guide our nonprofit organizations toward greater capacity, she said. To that end, local professionals have heeded the call for volunteers to populate the Community Foundation’s Consultant Bank, and they have provided generous examples of how they can help transform our nonprofit organizations. The Consultant Bank will be able to offer possible consulting needs which include facilitation for strategic planning sessions, a review of bookkeeping systems to ensure best practices are in place, assistance in crafting capital campaigns, policy development and so much more. The Community Foundation is eager to get this program up and running to help our nonprofit organizations continue their good work. The Consultant Bank is strictly volunteer based and will offer a variety of consulting needs (see list on page 2). However, volunteers will not assist with advising on legal or financial issues, dispute resolution and/or mediation, writing grants for an organization, conducting surveys and/or focus groups for an organization, or creating a website for an organization. If you are interested in serving as a consultant, or if you would like to learn more about The Consultant Bank, you are encouraged to contact Kelli Miller by phone at 812.232.2234, or [email protected].

“As local nonprofit organizations become stronger, more efficient and more sustainable, so do the communities in which they serve,” said Kelli Miller, Program Director for the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. “The Consultant Bank will enable nonprofit organizations to better meet their missions and goals in serving our communities.”

Though the Consultant Bank is still in its early stages, Miller says she has already received requests from both volunteer consultants

and nonprofit organizations interested in learning more about how to participate.

“There is a sincere desire to help guide our nonprofit organizations toward greater capacity,” she said. “To that end, local professionals have heeded the call for volunteers to populate the Community Foundation’s Consultant Bank, and they have provided generous examples of how they can help transform our nonprofit organizations. The Consultant Bank will be able to offer possible consulting needs which include facilitation for strategic planning sessions, a review of bookkeeping systems to ensure best practices are in place, assistance in crafting capital campaigns, policy development and so much more. The Community Foundation is eager to get this program up and running to help our nonprofit organizations continue their good work.”

On Saturday, April 27, the fourth annual Emily’s Walk on the Wabashiki was held in West Terre Haute. The Walk, named in memory of Emily Herrington, began at the Wabashiki trail head — Dewey Point — before going west on National Avenue to Sugar Creek Bridge on U.S. 40, turning left at the levee and back to Dewey Point shelter, about 2.7 miles.

The walk was established in 2016 by Herrington’s children to memorialize their mother, who passed in 2015, and her love of the Wabashiki. Emily would often walk on the Wabashiki Trail with her husband, Randy. She believed tranquility in nature was often missing from many people’s lives, so she would often take walks to help unplug from her stressors and reconnect with nature.

When the Walk was first held in 2016, the Herrington family was not expecting more than 30 participants; however, over 175 community members showed up in support of Emily’s Walk. This started a trend and a sense of community the Herrington family wished to continue.

Since its beginning three years ago, the Walk has attracted over 500 participants and has helped raise money for the Emily’s Walk on the Wabashiki Fund held within the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. This fund has assisted with improvements and maintenance of the Wabashiki Trail in West Terre Haute — including the purchase of a spotting telescope for bird watching at Dewey Point. The improvement of this trail has helped Emily’s vision of connecting with nature become a reality in the West Terre Haute community.

This year, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation was recognized for outstanding community service and financial support. This recognition was given to organizations that have shown steadfast support to the community of West Terre Haute and to those who strive for excellence and service for residents west of the Wabash River. In the past five years, the Community Foundation has granted nearly $45,000 in support of projects benefiting the West Terre Haute community, such as electrical system updates for the Sisters of Providence, new windows for the West Vigo Community Center, renovation of Le Fer Lake Trailhead, book exchange project at the West Terre Haute Little League ballpark, and kitchen remodeling and a handicap accessible restroom for the Providence Food Pantry.

Other organizations also recognized for outstanding community serviceand financial support include Helping Hands and Connecting Link.

HOW to Leverage the GIFT VII Matching FundsLilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT VII initiative allows the Community Foundation to match contributions made to any unrestricted fund.Below are examples of gifts eligible to be matched:

• Cash or cash equivalents

• Marketable securities, such as stock

• Gifts of real estate

• Certain charitable gifts in which the donor retains income for life

The gift must be made to an unrestricted endowment fund to be eligible for the match.

Please contact the Community Foundation at 812.232.2234 to learn more about how you can leverage the GIFT VII matching funds and triple your gift!

The Wabash Valley Community Foundation and its affiliates, Clay County Community Foundation and Sullivan County Community Foundation, have raised over half of the matching unrestricted discretionary endowment dollars under Lilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT VII initiative.

Lilly Endowment is providing funds for current contributions or irrevocable planned gifts made to a new or existing unrestricted or discretionary endowment fund. Unrestricted endowments provide the funding for the Community Foundation’s competitive grants in each county and for special community projects the Community Foundation supports. The GIFT VII $2-for-$1 match will enable fund creators to build their funds quickly and will increase the amount of money available to support local projects and programs in each of our three counties.

Typically, at least $5,000 is required to create a new unrestricted discretionary endowment fund; however, the GIFT VII initiative allows individuals, families and businesses to create new unrestricted endowment funds for as little as $1,667 — but only if the matching funds are available!

The matching opportunity is ongoing through December 2020, or until all matching funds have been claimed. The following graphic represents where each county is in its GIFT VII initiative efforts. Contributions of any amount will positively affect the Wabash Valley for generations to come.

If you are considering creating a lasting endowment, now is the time!

MATCHING DOLLARS LIMITED!

*Graph shows amount raised as of April 30, 2019.

YES, I WANT MY GIFT TO BE MATCHEDBY LILLY ENDOWMENT INC. GIFT VII TO BENEFIT MY COMMUNITY FOREVER!

If you are a high school senior or are currently in college, we invite you to apply for scholarships from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. To help your application stand out, spend some time thinking about the essay portion of your application, as it is an integral part of the application process. Be original, be sincere and write it yourself! To help you get started, below are the top three items to list in your scholarship essay.

1. Career Aspirations• How did you arrive at your decision? Tell a story to help the reader learn

more about you.• How do your plans relate to your educational and career objectives?• How do you plan to use your career to contribute to the community? Tell

the reader why you deserve this scholarship.

2. Activities Outside of the Classroom• You have listed your extracurricular and community activities in your

application, now elaborate in your essay. Did you hold a part-time job while attending school, or volunteer at an organization?

• Why did you choose these activities? Did these activities enrich your academic, social or personal life?

• How did these activities prepare you for your academic career and beyond?

3. Distinguish Yourself from Other Applicants• Did you receive a prestigious award while in school? Write about it!

Your scholarship application and accompanying essay are essentially your sales pitch. If you do not write about it, the reader will not have a chance to be impressed. This is one of those times where bragging about yourself is encouraged!

• Do you have any skills, talents or passions? Applying for scholarships is a highly competitive process, so emphasize things that demonstrate your ability to lead, take initiative, persist and care for your community!

Hundreds of individuals have made a difference by endowing scholarships for students such as yourself. Higher education costs are on the rise, but scholarships can make it easier and more affordable to attend college. The application will open on July 10, 2019, at wvcf.com/apply-online and will close promptly at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

Wabash valley community foundationHosts 25th annual spring golf outing!

The Wabash Valley Community Foundation held its 25th Annual Spring Golf Outing on May 2, 2019, at Hulman Links. Golfers braved the weather and hit the greens to help the Community Foundation raise funds to continue its mission to engage people, build resources and strengthen communities in the Wabash Valley.

The Community Foundation’s Spring Golf Outing is just one way we are helping to encourage local giving and supporting effective philanthropy in our communities. Sponsorships for the Spring Golf Outing directly sustain the Community Foundation’s work throughout Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties. We extend a thank you to all of businesses and individuals who supported our golf outing and to all the volunteers who gave their time to assist throughout the day.

We thank the following businesses who have supported our golf outing since 1995:

• First Financial Bank• Freitag-Weinhardt• Terry Hogan / Morgan Stanley

Also thanks to our golf tournament committee:

• Richard Shagley• Sandy Reece

• Brian Dyer

Thank you for your dedication to our communities and for allowing us to serve you as your Community Foundation. For good. For ever.®
