to further extend the hours to midnight, with the last patron allowed in at 11:30.

The Commission took into account the fact that the police department reported that there had been no issues, either with local code enforcement, or with state Alcoholic Beverage Control. The restaurant serves full meals, not just snack foods, and patrons are encouraged to order food, rather than just alcohol. There is live entertainment, but it is still required to end by 10:00 pm.

The Commission approved the new extended hours request.

“Matilda The Musical” made its San Jose premiere March 7-12 in the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, as a part of Broadway San Jose’s 2016-2017 season.

Winner of four Tony Awards and a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards, including Best Musical, “Matilda The Musical” is based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox”). It’s the story of an extraordinary girl who gets lost in her books and dreams of a better life. Miscellany

In 1980, I met a guy who was a student at Occidental College in Los Angeles. He was working on a double major of Art and Physics. He said he was planning on a career in a field called ergonomics. Since there wasn’t a degree program for this yet, he had made up his own. I’d never heard of that field, but when he told me about it, I was a little envious, because it sounded really fun and exciting.

A few years later, “ergonomics” was a household word. The Cambridge English Dictionary defines ergonomics as “the scientific study of people and their working conditions, especially in order to improve effectiveness.” We became a society of kneeler chairs, funny-shaped computer keyboards, and standing desks.

One of the first things I ran into in this world of heightened physical awareness was how hard it was to find anything that actually benefited me. All that stuff was great for average-sized men. But everybody else, including short women, had to wait about 20 years for manufacturers to take the chance and make more than one size and type of helpful/healthful item. I now have an office chair that fits me properly, without the huge lumbar support that my husband loves, but which curves my back in exactly the wrong place. And more items are being constructed with multiple points of adjustability, so we can customize our tools.

Ergonomics is something we need to take charge of on our own, not just in the workplace. I recently watched a man on a bicycle whose seat was so low that his knees rose above his waistline. He could hardly pedal, and wobbled all over the sidewalk. All he needed was a few seconds with an adjustable wrench to raise his seat. Growing children need to have their bike seats and handlebars adjusted frequently.

Another part of daily life

that affects many of us sooner or later is in the use of mobility aids, otherwise known as walkers. My grandmother’s walker was a metal frame with rubber feet that she had to pick up and move with each step. Somebody eventually got clever and “ergonomicized” these, putting little plastic skids or tennis balls on the feet, so they could slide over most surfaces. Modern walkers come in all types these days, from the simple aluminum frame, to fancy wheeled types with baskets and pulldown seats.

When my parents needed walkers, the first thing they did was to hunt for bargains at the drugstore. That part was okay, as most local stores sell perfectly reputable equipment. But the mistake my parents made was in not getting help adjusting them. They just used the items straight out of the box, no questions asked. This was especially silly of them, as they had top-quality Kaiser insurance, and Kaiser has a wonderful physical therapy department. All my parents would have had to do was make an appointment, and they could have had their walkers adjusted properly, and the therapists would have shown them all kinds of neat tricks for operating their new gear. Instead, both my parents shuffled along, hunched over, unable to steer easily. I finally had to take the walkers away from them and make the proper height adjustments myself, as they shrieked and protested. But it was a funny thing. When they both finally stood up straight for the first time in, well, far too long, and started to learn how to use their walkers properly, they stopped crashing into walls, and their chronic backaches went away.

So, take care of yourself. A bike, chair, keyboard, walker, lawnmower, whatever: please get the best you can, get it adjusted properly, keep it adjusted properly, and learn how to use it properly. Your body will truly thank you.

Ergonomics, anyone?by Judith Steinle

The World War II Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Madras Maiden” will take to the skies over San Francisco on March 25 and 26. Public flights will begin in the morning with ground tours in the afternoon. Hours are from 10am to 5pm.

The Liberty Foundation’s B-17 “Madras Maiden” is one of only 12 B-17’s that still fly today. The B-17 has been dubbed the “Flying Fortress” as a result of her defensive fire power seen in action on every theater of opera-tion during WWII. The majority of all WWII B-17’s were oper-ated by the 8th Airforce in Eu-rope and participated in countless missions, from bases in England to deep inside enemy territory. There were 12,732 B-17’s pro-duced between 1935 and 1945, of these, 4,735 were lost in com-bat. Following WWII, the B-17 saw combat in three more wars: B-17’s saw service in Korea, Is-rael’s war of 1948 and Vietnam.

“Madras Maiden” was built toward the end of the war and never saw any combat. It is painted in the colors of the 381st Bomb Group. The 381st BG flew 297 operational missions during the war, dropping 22,000 tons of bombs. During this time, they lost 131 B-17’s and downed over 223 enemy aircraft.

The Liberty Foundation’s B-17 had an interesting postwar history. The airplane was built under contract by Lockheed-Vega in Burbank California on October 17th 1947. The “Madras Maiden” spent its entire military career (1944-1959) as a research and development aircraft, also be-ing modified to be a “Pathfinder” B-17 equipped with the H2X “Mickey” radar system, and is the only “Pathfinder” aircraft left in existence. It was sold in sur-plus in 1959 to American Com-pressed Steel of Ohio for the sum of $5,025.00, then sold to Albany Building of Florida and used as a cargo transport, hauling fresh produce between Florida and the Caribbean. In 1963 she was sold again and converted to a Fire Ant sprayer under contract with the US Department of Agriculture.

WWII B-17 Bomber “Flying Fortress” takes flight over San Francisco

From 1979 through 2014, The B-17 bomber was purchased by three different Aviation Museums and continued to be slowly re-stored back to her original combat configuration. In 2016 The Lib-erty Foundation began to operate the “Madras Maiden” and flies today to continue our mission of honoring our veterans, educating current and future generations as to the high price of freedom and to preserve our aviation history.

The Liberty Foundation’s B-17 provides visitors the oppor-tunity to take a step back in time and gain respect for the men and women who gave so much to pro-tect our freedoms. At each stop, flight “missions” are available in the “Madras Maiden,” which al-low people to take flights in this historic aircraft. During flight operations, there will be a desig-nated, secure area for those who would like to watch the aircraft flights at no charge. For enthu-siasts that choose to take a flight experience on this legendary air-craft, these participants receive a pre-flight safety briefing contain-ing the historical significance of the aircraft and a spectacular sce-nic air tour around the city. Dur-ing the flight, passengers enjoy the unique opportunity of moving about the aircraft to the different combat crew positions to see the viewpoint that thousands of our heroes saw in combat over 70 years ago.

World War II was the single greatest challenge to freedom in the 20th Century. Through the 46 months of war, over 300,000 American soldiers, sailors and aviators died defending the be-liefs that they held dear, with many more sacrificing in other

ways. These men became our he-roes through their struggles and came home to a grateful nation. Over the half century since, those heroes became our husbands, uncles, fathers and grandfathers; in many cases, their stories were never shared with their fami-lies. Now, with the popularity of movies like “Pearl Harbor” and the Steven Ambrose book “The Wild Blue”, families are seeking to learn more about our veterans. They realize that these stories of courage and valor need to be pre-served for future generations. Es-timates place the number of World War II veterans dying each day at over 1,500. With each death, another story of courage, honor and sacrifice is lost forever. This aircraft represents that legacy of courage and valor.”

The B-17 flight experience takes 45 minutes with approxi-mately half an hour in flight. B-17 Flights are $410 for Liberty Foundation members and $450 for non-members. Passengers can become a Liberty Foundation Member for $40 and receive the member discount for family and friends. While the cost to take a flight sounds expensive, it must be put into perspective when compared to the B-17’s operat-ing cost. A Flying Fortress cost is over $5000 per flight hour. The Liberty Foundation spends over $1,500,000 annually to keep the B-17 airworthy and out on tour.

This is your invitation to see, tour and fly a mission and take advantage of this ultimate histori-cal experience, come touch the past and fly through ageless skies. For more information, please call (918)-340-0243 or visit www.lib-ertyfoundation.org.

Frank Weber’s novel is fic-tion but he draws on personal ex-perience as well as real life inci-dents. He combines these various elements to create this novel. One real life element was a woman in his life who he lost touch with. This was before the age of high tech. He could not find her for the longest time, but suddenly she reappeared again. She invited him to dance with her. After the dance she said she hated him then walked out of his life. The novel begins with the protago-nist whose ex-girlfriend suddenly vanished from his life, and his neighbors assume he murdered her. This premise was inspired

Forensic psychologist presents his novel “Murder Book”by Guy Takamatsu

by a real life incident in which a local suspect was assumed to be guilty. The locals wanted to kill him. Later it was proved someone else was the culprit. The novel picks up ten years later when the protagonist is a police detective. He is given a case which took place near his hometown, where his ex-girlfriend vanished. The title of his novel, “Murder Book,” refers to a homicide case which has gone cold, or unsolved. The speaker gave the basic setting for the story, but not the ending. To get the rest of the story, the audi-ence will have to read the book when it is released in May.

The author explained his ra-

tional for writing the novel. He wanted to create a surprising and logical story. Perhaps too many stories nowadays lack a coherent thread and plot line. On the other hand some coherent, logical sto-ries may be too predictable, lead-ing to ho-hum boring endings.

Much of the time was spent on question and answers. His answers provided an interest-ing insight into his field of work. Mr. Weber’s job is to interview suspects and evaluate them. This has enabled him to gain a certain amount of insight into the rationale or motivation as to why people commit such crimes. When he first wrote the book, he

used the detective’s point of view. Then he went back and included the criminal’s perspective. Some readers may disagree, but Mr. Weber’s line of work seems remi-niscent of the Detective Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio) in Law & Order Criminal Intent. Both the D’Onofrio character and novel’s detective (made in the image of the author) have an obsessive, quirky character.

The speaker shared stories on how people have tried to beat the system; people can be depress-ingly creative. When someone asked why a nice person like him was involved in such work, he explained that he started work-

ing with victims of crime. He was mad that something was not being done about the offenders. It was an unpleasant job, but someone had to do it; someone had to in-dicate when a suspect was faking insanity or trying some bogus ex-cuse to “get away with murder.” His line of work can be stressful, and the novel was a sort of cathar-tic outlet for the author. Talking to certain people could also be a stress reliever. To the audience, his presentation about the book was an informative glimpse into the world of forensic psychology.

Seniors Unlimited by Pamela Spahr

When I was strolling down Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras in New Orleans, I heard a faint tapping off to my right. There, I saw a blind person with a white cane, moving cautiously through the throng of people. Behind her, stretching for about a block, were intermittent groups of blind folk also tapping along the street and the sidewalk. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. I was aston-ished.

I wondered who had made the huge leap of faith that allowed them to participate. Because, for every person who says, “yes, they will be fine,” I was sure there would be someone who wanted to protect them. Someone who thought it was best to keep them “safe.”

These blind people chose not to be sheltered, but rather, to par-ticipate in life.

I look at some of the older people around me and see people who do not like change. They do not like to try new things. They long for the good old days. They want to be “safe” in their comfort-able world and chose not to poke their heads out. What a shame, I say. I think there are so many new and interesting adventures wait-ing for us, if we keep our minds

Open Minds have More Funopen.

Do you think you have to travel to exotic destinations to fully participate in life? Find fun in your own town. I know a fellow who just completed his fourth novel at the age of 89 and regularly attends a writer’s group here in town. A friend runs half marathons at the age of 76. I am starting a new business at the age of 70, in my new “hometown.”

Try a new ice cream flavor, or, instead of playing poker with your friends, start with Fish and then move on. Instead of going to the same church, try out another one. Who knows? You might meet a new best friend.

Have you always wanted to meet that nice person down the street? Bring over the checkers board or a small plant and intro-duce yourself. Again, who knows what the outcome might be?

I recommend Salsa dancing or learning to dance the tango for those who feel they are over-whelmed, bored, or stuck in a rout.

Breakout of the ho-hum of life and be like those blind folk on Bourbon Street: try something adventurous.

The Intrepid Senior

Over the years, we have found that one of the students’ greatest criticisms of any math class is their claim that they didn’t learn anything. Therefore, as part of their final, I have the students list ten things they learned. These items could be anything at all in relation to the class. They are allowed to write their list ahead of time and bring it to the final if they want. Most observations are quite normal, but some make for interesting reading. Here are some of the classics for this year:

1. I learned that the lottery is a tax on the mathematically illiterate.

2. I learned that you can do anything, though you may need help to do it.

3. I learned that my calculator is a lot smarter than I thought it was. I think it is even smarter than I am.

4. The section of the book that I was excited about, because I knew I would understand it, is the one we decided to skip.

5. By the time you understand the problem enough to ask questions, you don’t need to ask them anymore, because you already know the answer.

6. I learned that I really hate negative people. I think about half of them are negative, and the other half are just stupid.

7. I learned that a smart thing to do is to find out who in the class is getting good grades and then sit by them.

What Students Learned In Math Classby Daris Howard

8. The girl sitting next to me kept playing games, and then she was upset when she failed the test. She said she couldn’t figure out why she did so poorly. Duh.

9. Taking a class with my brother is fun, but annoying.

10. When your teacher allows you to take a 3X5 note card into a test, it really only helps if you put the right stuff on it.

11. What I learn in a class is actually more important than the grade I get. Though a good grade is nice, too.

12. If you work hard and learn the material quickly, you can sit by an attractive person and help them. That impresses them a lot, and they are happy to sit by you. If you put off learning it until you have forgotten what was talked about in class, then you have to go to Professor Howard and have him help you, and that’s not near as much fun.

13. Make sure you have plenty of time to get to class without hurrying. If you have to hurry, you get sweaty and nobody wants to sit by you.

14. It is harder to pay attention when you sit in the back row.

15. I learned that a child is a tax deduction. Maybe not the most effective one, however.

16. Don’t date someone you take a class with because it is really awkward when you break up.

17. If you have a hot date to

do homework, it is a lot more fun and you learn a lot more. (Maybe not about math, though).

18. I learned why I am an art major and not a math major.

19. I learned that the stress from worrying about doing your homework is a lot worse than actually doing it.

20. I learned the most from your talking to us about trying again and again when you fail, especially with the number of failures you have had trying to get your books and stories published. I will never forget your quote. “You need to stretch yourself beyond what you feel you are capable of. If you are not failing now and then, you are not reaching high enough.” That will always remind me to keep trying.

21. I learned that Professor Howard was actually good looking when he was in college. (I found an old year book picture of you).

Local/Public Notice Campbell Express, March 15, 2017 - page 7

Tax preparation assistance is once again available to low income, elderly, disabled, and limited English speaking taxpayers through VITA, the free nationwide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program coordinated by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). VITA tax preparation services are temporarily located at County libraries in Campbell, Cupertino, and Milpitas, and at the Santa Clara County Social Services Agency CalWORKs Employment Connection Center.

“Many individuals and families are counting on their tax refund to offset financial obligations, but are either unable to pay for the professional service, or lack the English language skills or knowledge to work on the return themselves,” said President Dave Cortese, County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. “This free tax preparation assistance is so valuable that we want to make it available again this year.”

The IRS, United Way Silicon Valley, 2-1-1 Santa Clara County, the County of Santa Clara, churches, nonprofits and other local organizations are working together to offer more than 40 VITA Tax Assistance sites throughout Santa Clara County. Trained IRS-certified volunteers will provide assistance in preparing basic forms (1040EZ, 1040A, 1040 with Schedule A, B, Limited Schedule CEZ, C and California State Income Tax Returns) in multiple languages, and facilitate e-filing or paper returns. Low-income, elderly, disabled and speaking limited English taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of the service.

Over the past 15 years, VITA volunteers and community partners have helped secure more than $600 million refund dollars for households in the Bay Area. Last year alone, more than 74,000 families were assisted through VITA, resulting in a total of $80 million in tax refunds.

“This is a great service that can benefit many families in our county,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Mike Wasserman, who was a professional tax preparer for over 20 years and is the Chair of the County Library District Joint Powers Authority. “New tax laws and regulations are added every year. We are glad to open our libraries to connect IRS trained multi-lingual volunteers and taxpayers so they can confidently fill out their income tax forms and get the assistance and refunds they may be eligible to receive.”

To qualify for the VITA assistance program, taxpayers must be working U.S. Citizens or permanent residents with a valid Social Security or ITIN number, and have a combined household income of less than $54,000.

Taxpayers need to bring the following information to VITA
