Ponce de Leon Inlet LighthouseThis 175-foot lighthouse, the tallest in Florida, was completed in 1887. The beach side of town is bordered by 13 miles of pristine, powder sand, natural dunes and low-rise dwellings. It’s connected to the mainland by only two causeways, and to the south it’s protected by the pristine beaches of the Canaveral National Seashore.

New Smyrna is the perfect place to go to enjoy nature, excellent backwater fi shing and peering into the ruins of the Turnbull Plantation established in 1767 (it’s the second oldest colony in the state after St. Augustine).

3 Day ItineraryDAY ONE:Afternoon Arrival – Welcome to Daytona Beach, a town that really knows how to play. Notice the breeze ruffling the palm trees and take a deep breath of salt air. Feel like you’re in the islands? The Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as you can see. You can imagine Morocco due east on the coast of Africa.

Late Afternoon – A brisk swim will get you ready for an evening out. Read SEE Daytona Beach magazine (naturally) and check out the calendar of events so you won’t miss a thing.

Early Bird Special – Sunset specials every evening at Inlet Harbor Restaurant are a must-do if you ‘really’ want to watch the sun go down in the west.

DAY TWO:Good Morning – With a good night’s rest, and possibly coffee and a granola bar, you’ll be ready to walk the beach. Beach combers find the best treasures at dawn after a high tide.

Mingling – Hang out with the hometown crowd on Saturday morning at the Farmers Market at City Island next to Jackie Robinson Ball Park. Pick up fresh fruit and local offerings to take back to your room. If you’re here on a Thursday afternoon, check out the Ormond Beach Farmers Market.

Time to Explore – Take a “Go and Do” shuttle tour with Roni. Rent a Harley. Shop Historic Downtown Daytona Beach; Ormond Beach off Granada; New Smyrna Beach on Flagler Avenue.

Wildside Rides – Airboat tours take you deep into marshlands. Try surfing lessons for the fun of it.

Loop the Loop – A scenic way to end the day. The Ormond Scenic Loop is a quiet canopied roadway in a environment that is uniquely Florida.

Evening Fare – Caribbean Jacks, north of Main Street on the mainland, is where locals gather. Or take a drive to the RiverGrille on the Tomoka River and relax on the deck. For family fun, try nighttime miniature golf at Go Kart City and Congo River.

A Moonwalk – on the beach is mesmerizing…not to mention romantic.

DAY THREE: Get up and out on the beach, don’t dawdle. Photograph the sun rising out of the ocean from Ponce Inlet Jetty. The seabirds will pose in the foreground while you compose your shot. At this point you may start planning what you’ll do on your the next trip, but try not to do that. There is more to see NOW before you head home. What is your pleasure? Pick up a souvenir at the beachside shops for your favorite aunt. A real lifeguard hat will impress your buddies and chocolate or salt water taffy will please everyone.

Bike Week has rocketed to fame from its humble beginnings on the beach in 1937. The first motorcycle racecourse was 3.2 miles on hard-packed sand and public roadways with sand-banked turns. That year the winner of the first Daytona 200 averaged 73 mph.

After World War II, the nation’s interest in motorcycles expanded. A new beach-road course was lengthened to 4.1 miles.

The race moved to the Daytona International Speedway in 1961. During the next two decades, crowds unofficially topped 50,000. But by the 1980s Bike Week was better known for raucous crowds than races.

Chamber president George Mirabal and beachside businessman Alan Robertson put together a plan in 1998 that successfully discouraged the troublemakers and welcomed biker fans, which now numbered about 90,000.

Today the chrome plated machines are recognized as much for their gleaming beauty as their speed. Hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts come to show off their bikes and enjoy the races, street festivals and rallies.
