insider’s guide

Deb Smith

WWelcome to Daytona Beach. Grab your towel and head for our world famous beach. After you’ve relaxed and recharged, there are many activities beyond the backdrop of the surf.

Follow our tips and we’ll help you discover the best off-beat shops, historic landmarks and gathering places where you can dine and dance the night away. Explore the boardwalk shops and linger at an outdoor café or try a day of deep sea fi shing. From surfi ng to reading a book under an umbrella, there are many reasons why visitors return.

Wherever you stay—Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, New Smyrna Beach or Ponce Inlet—slip into your sandals and start exploring. With 23 miles of sun kissed sands, you will always fi nd something happening.

Once the youngsters have played on the beach, they can climb, slide and swing to their heart’s content in neigh-

borhood mini parks. But best of all, they will love cooling off in the splash fountains.

It’s not surprising that racing is on our minds. The wide,

compacted sand was used as a race course for cars and motorcycles. But there’s more here than the need

for speed. Climb the highest lighthouse in Florida at Ponce

Inlet and visit the marine museum. On the wild side, paddle a kayak down a

narrow channel for a peek at birds and blooms.Whether you’re here for action or relaxation, we

welcome one and all to our diverse and friendly coast, one of America’s favorite destinations.

ACTIVITIESgetting the most out of your vacation

VVisitors choose the Daytona Beach area for many reasons, but mostly because it’s a perfect blend of things to do!

The curious can explore a mix of historic landmarks, museums and an old sugar mill. Visit the ballpark where Jackie Robinson played in the fi rst integrated Major League game in the spring of 1946. Take an afternoon and go miniature golfi ng and for some relief from the hot sun, take the family to a water park and get soaked!

If you haven’t tried surfi ng or scuba diving yet, what are you waiting for? Breathe in the tangy aroma of the ocean while riding a bike along the dunes—our area is full of unexpected pleasures including fi shing. The Florida waters have some of the best sport fi shing you’ll ever experience. Let a charter boat captain show you the way.

We never forget we’re home to the Daytona 500 and one of the few places where you are allowed to drive on the beach. All year round you can browse through racing-inspired shops, explore the interactive exhibits at the International Speedway or grab the wheel yourself at a go-kart track.

Take a short drive to Deland to experience Florida’s wild places—a birdwatcher’s paradise of migrating birds and waterfowl. You can dip your paddle in a meandering waterway or fl y across the water on an air boat. Finish with a quick dip in the 72 degree natural spring at De Leon State Park.

After a fun-fi lled, action-packed day, one of the best things to do in Daytona Beach is to just sit back and enjoy the water views.

WWhether you came to Daytona Beach for the rich history, the roaring speed, or the fabulous beaches, you still need to eat! Well, you’re in luck. Not only do the area’s eateries offer delicious food, they also serve up views that become indelible memories. If you’re look-ing for a casual place for quick beach snacks or a trendy dockside spot, the ambiance makes everything taste better.

When you’re craving something familiar, Daytona Beach has plenty of nationally known restaurants. But why not try something local? An abundance of fresh seafood comes with the ocean view.

At many of our dockside restaurants you feel right at home in your t-shirt and fl ip fl ops. Start with a plate of oysters and some smoked kingfi sh and work your way

up to a fresh grouper sandwich. Order it blackened or broiled; just don’t forget to squeeze some lemon on it.

You’ll fi nd other popular options including steak, Southern barbecue, and vegetarian dishes at some of Daytona Beach’s best restaurants. And multi-cultural food is pervasive in the area – from Asian to Indian and Spanish to Caribbean—there are many fl avors worth coming back for!

For a romantic dinner, choose one of the bistros offering a candlelit table with amazing views of the ocean and cuisine prepared by renowned chefs.

To satisfy your entire family, the area has many open air “Florida Style” restaurants and casual eateries where the dress code is informal and the food is hearty and delicious.

5 Servings of Florida’s Fabulous Seafood

Conch: pronounced “Konk.” These chewy clams are served tenderized with lime juice, raw and chopped in salad. Also chopped, breaded and fried as conch fritters and in conch chowder (usually red, spicy)

Mahi: the correct name is dolphin (not the mammal). Firm, white-fleshed and delicious grilled, blackened and Cajun-style.

Grouper: one of the mildest fishes available, served friend,

blackened, broiled or grilled as an entrée, but a fried grouper sandwich is hard to beat.

Yellowfin tuna: firm, flavorful semi-dark meat fish most often grilled, broiled or blackened.

Florida lobster: known as spiny lobster, has no claws like Maine lobster. Florida lobster tails are broiled and served with melted butter. Absolutely delicious!
