Introduction

The Brighton Dome Box Office

— Welcome to SEE: The Brighton Documentary Film Festival. We are absolutely delighted with the stellar line-up we have secured for this year, our fifth anniversary! We created SEE with the aim of giving the many film-makers, producers, directors, production companies and film students in Brighton and the South-East a chance to meet up for a weekend once a year for a spot of documentary indulgence. Over the three days you’ll be able to talk to commissioners, listen to established directors at Q&A’s, or discuss your ideas at the bar with a distributor. They are all going to be here. We like to think of this as the festival by film-makers, for film-makers. We’ve already had a number of productions grow out of meetings at SEE. Let’s hope the same happens againthis year.

An Evening with Louis Theroux

BAFTA and Screen South are delighted to welcome BAFTA winner Louis Theroux to this year's SEE docs festival.

Best known for making documentaries that get to the heart of the world's most fascinating lifestyles and controversial human behaviours, Louis' gentle questioning style and tenacious journalistic focus has shone light on some of the world's most intriguing stories.

Over the years, though formats and subject matter have varied, Louis has remained true to a way of working that is uniquely his own: offering rounded portraits of the inhabitants, resisting easy judgments and giving us a nuanced picture of worlds in which people do questionable things for very human reasons.

Join us for what promises to be a memorable and enlightening session mapping his creative journey through his critically and commercially acclaimed slate of work.

FREE EVENTTime: 9.00 Duration: 105 mins

Time: 11.00 Duration: 90 mins

Toby Amies talks to Jonathan Meades, who has written and performed in some fifty television shows on such subjects as the utopian avoidance of right angles, totalitarian architecture, the Hanseatic cities, the beauty of Hebridean dereliction, the allure of vertigo. His latest series, Off Kilter on BBC Four, was called "a masterpiece" by Simon Heffer in the Daily Telegraph. He has been described as having "invented a genre of his own", as "the most erudite broadcaster of the age", as "a charlatan" and as "a heavily sedated Geoffrey Howe". Jonathan will screen clips and talk about his work.

With the onslaught of digital media are we seeing a revolution in distribution? What about funding for co-production - can distributors help? How does the partnership work? What do you need to do to make that partnership work? Join a panel of specialist international documentary distributors who will each offer a different perspective on the distribution process and how you can succeed in getting the World to see your film and get paid in the process. Leading the Panel is David Hooper of Espresso TV.
