Prologue:

Quiet Desperation

"Who the heck does he think he is?!"

Muttering under her breath, Celine Anne Sison logged out of eBay.ph in anger, then started

googling for the name 'Jasper James Angeles.'

She took a deep breath as she waited for the results. It didn't help. One single page came out

of the search ("Loser," she thought) and she skimmed through the entries.

Whoever this pompous, arrogant snob was ("A-ha, a MySpace blog!"), she already knew she

hated him for trying to outbid her for the book she needed for her upcoming reunion... and she

hated him even more for the rude way he did it.

Did he really think he was the only person on the planet who knew what the wordasinine

meant?

"How immensely asinine of him." she thought.

His MySpace page took a bit long to load. Inadvertently Celine's eyes returned to the Explorer

tab which still displayed the email from Mitch, their reunion organizer.

She didn't have to click on it to remember what it said. Just thinking about that email

("Subject: Batch Reunion") already gave her goose bumps. And the most important part of that

email were these four words:

Program Coordinator: JM Serrano.

She was actually going to see him again. After two long years, she was going to see JM again.

The thought made her so giddy that she felt like flying... and so terrified that she felt like

throwing up on her bedroom floor.

The MySpace page finally stopped loading ("No pictures. How pathetic.") and Celine read

through his profile.

"Weird." she thought, her thick eyebrows knitting together. "We actually work in the same

office."

Of course, it wasn't so surprising that she'd never bumped into him before. Their call center

covered four floors, three shifts, and a total of 80 different teams. And Celine wasn't exactly the

kind of person who felt comfortable talking to people outside of her own team. She even had

trouble talking to her own team lead!

Which was why she desperately needed that book.

But this Jasper James Angeles seemed hell-bent on getting it for himself. Their bidding war

had now reached P5,000, and it didn't seem like he was going to budge.

"If we go to the same office, maybe we could share it." she now thought. As she sat back to

contemplate this idea, her eyes fell on something else on his page:

I don't care if it hurts. I want to have control.

For some strange reason, this short snippet suddenly made her reconsider her hatred for the

faceless Jasper. Maybe - just maybe - he did need the book as badly as she did.

Celine sighed, closed all tabs, and stared at her own "theme song lyrics" on her desktop

wallpaper as she pressed Shut Down on her laptop:

I learned the truth at seventeen:

That love was meant for beauty queens.

And high school girls with clear skinned smiles,

who married young and then retired.

The song lyrics disappeared, and soon all that was left was a blank gray screen, where the

reflection of a short chubby girl with dark oily skin and dry wiry hair stared back at her. Her

eyes were sad behind her thick-rimmed plastic glasses.

Celine shook her head as she closed her laptop lid.

No, she thought.She needed the book more.

Chapter One:

Make The Decision

Ten seconds to go.

One more call to take, and Celine could finally log out.

"Today's the day." she thought. "I'll finally get my hands on the book that will change my life."

For one moment she thought about her recent favorite fantasy:

Its the night of their reunion, and the ballroom is filled with the people who never

noticed her in college. JM is there. A number of pretty girls stand around him, the

same girls from their batch who always tried to get his attention. But then Celine

walks in, and JM looks up with a smile that lights up the whole room

The call light blinked. Celine pressed the black button with a soft sigh.

What city and state please? she asked. Her soft, low-pitched voice now carried an East

Coast American accent that sounded both friendly and professional.

She listened through her headset as her fingers flew across the keyboard.Forks, Washington.

Yes I have the number for Edward Cullen in Forks, Washington. she said before hittingenter; the number was instantly delivered to the caller, a teenage girl in Florida. It was

probably the hundredth request for that listing that day, and the local tourism office of Forks

did a good thing by actually having that number created.

Now Celine clicked on the logout page; after pressing a few more keys she was officially done

for the day. It was 6:01 a.m..

Bye guys, she said softly, but neither the person to her left nor to her right noticed.

Bye Mike. she told her team lead, who stood beside Lyras table with a clipboard and some

printouts in his hand. He nodded at her briefly, but then someone on their aisle stood up and

clapped, and Mike was already putting on the headset that had been hanging around his neck

and moving forward to assist him; Celine was totally forgotten.

She sighed and went straight to her locker.

Twelve minutes later she was at the 3rd floor of their building, where she found an empty

table at Starbucks. She checked her watch, decided to get a coffee, leaving an old copy of her

schoolsFolio on the table as she stood up. If Jasper came in while she was at the queue, he

would still know where to go because of theFolio.

At least, that was what they agreed on yesterday on YM, when he asked her how they were

supposed to recognize each other.

Briefly she wondered what Jasper looked like, but then the cute barista asked her what she

wanted, and she immediately blushed and stammered.

The usual, please.

The thick eyebrows that she secretly stared at so often from behind her daily coffee suddenly

knit in confusion. Im sorry, he said, his smile friendly but detached. But what would your

usual be?

Celine pursed her lips. Of course he wouldnt remember her, even though shed been giving

him her order everyday at around 6am. Her face grew hot with embarrassment.

Caf Mocha. she mumbled.

With her cheeks burning, she paid and made her way to the bar. She kept her face hidden

behind her hair as she stood there, afraid to look up at him again.

"I need that book now." she thought, trying to keep the stupid tears from forming in her eyes.

After the girl barista gave her her coffee, Celine turned and was surprised to find someone

standing next to her table, frowning down at theFolio as if it offended him.

"Is that him?"

He was tall and thin, with arms that stuck out like spindles from his shirt sleeves, his hands

shoved inside his jean pockets. His face looked sort of scary. Like a skull with pale skin

stretched over the bones. A pair of metal-rimmed glasses rested on the bridge of his thin nose,

and his too-long hair fell in messy, greasy waves on his shoulders.

She took a deep breath and moved towards the table.

Are you looking for someone? she asked timidly. He looked shocked to see her. The

expression that followed the shock was even less flattering.

She set her mug on the table and sat down, then nervously adjusted her own glasses on her

nose.

Im Jasper. he said, his voice almost breaking midway. He cleared his throat. Are you

Celine?

Yes. Celine unconsciously ended up staring at him. "He looks like a vulture."

He cleared his throat again. Uhm, can I sit down?

Celine was almost startled. Oh, yeah, sure.

They sat awkwardly at that table for the next few minutes, not knowing what to say. Which

was in complete contrast to the way were fiercely outbidding each other last night for the "last

known copy ofSeduction Secrets That Really Work - the book that has dramatically changed

the lives of anyone who's ever used these top secret techniques in their life."

Jasper kept looking at his watch and looking at the door, his long right leg thumpingnervously against the next chair the whole time. Celine kept taking sips from her coffee,

keeping her eyes busy so that Jasper wouldnt catch her staring at his bony face again.

6:47am.

The seller said hed meet us at seven, right? Celine asked, tentatively.

Jasper didnt even look at her. Yeah.

6:59am.

Celine wanted to ask another question to ease the uncomfortable silence, but then decided to

just purse her lips and focus on her coffee.

7:07am.

A regular looking guy in a white shirt and dark blue jeans stood at the caf entrance, and for

some reason both Jasper and Celine noticed him at the same time. He returned their gaze

unashamedly, his eyes curious and interested. Then his face slowly spread into a friendly smile,

and as he walked over to them Jasper and Celine noticed the thick spiral-bound book in his

hand.

Hey there. Jasper and Celine?

His smile was bright and his manner was comfortable as he deftly pulled out the chair

between them and sat. He set the spiral-bound book in front of him; its edges were worn, some

pages looked like theyd been folded several times, and there were coffee stains on the cover.

I cant stay long," the guy said, "I haveto get back to my friends. But heres your book, and I

want to ask you guys something before I give it to you.

His voice was medium deep, and the way he spoke was animated yet drawn out at the same

time. He had the kind of energy that made Celine feel a bit special because she was the one he

chose to talk to. Even Jasper seemed a bit more relaxed than a few minutes ago.

The guy now leaned slightly forward; he looked like he had a lot of amazing jokes running in

his head, and he was about to share one with them.

Do you think its even ethical for me to be selling you this book on how to attract the

opposite sex, when youre obviously two very interesting people who dont even need it?

Celine blushed and looked down, but felt compelled to look back up at him again. Jasper

smiled for the first time that morning, and sat up a bit straighter.

Actually, Jasper finally said, I really think it would help me

Are you kidding, man? The seller looked incredulous. I mean, look at you. You look likethat vampire guy all the girls are falling in love with. Whats his name?

Edward Cullen? Celine said. She felt slightly light-headed as she spoke to him for the first

time.

Yeah, that guy. Youre another of his fans, huh? He grinned at her, and Celine looked down

and blushed again. But you, Celine

Celine looked up, and realized he was now looking at her intently. It was mesmerizing.

Take off your glasses. he whispered. His request sounded so confident, commanding, and

sexy.

Celine took off her glasses. No one had ever looked at her - in all her 22 years of existence -

the way he was looking at her now.

Are those eyes even real? his voice was husky, and an awed smile lit his face.

Well, yeah she stammered.

They remind me of Egyptian princesses. he said.

Jasper was now looking closely at Celines eyes, too.

Now the guys expression turned playful. You know what I want to do with you? he told her,

a naughty look in his eyes. I want to take you to one of those fancy stores in Greenbelt, get you

to wear an amazingly sexy red dress. Then Im going to make out with you inside one of their

window displays where everyone can see.

Celines imagination ran wild. She didnt know if she wanted to run away and hide, or jump

on his lap and tear off his shirt. She never experienced these thoughts for anyone before.

Isnt she adorable when she blushes? he asked Jasper, whose smile was still there.

Suddenly he switched gears. So yeah, Im not really sure if I should be selling this to youguys. There could be poor souls out there who need this so much more than you do.

Jasper now looked like he was almost ready to agree with him. Celine had forgotten all about

the book and just wanted to know what his price was.

Were still buying it. said Jasper. He was now sitting up straighter in his chair; his nervous

leg movements were completely gone.

The guy looked at him with an expression of respect and camaraderie. Alright, if you say so.

He smiled at them both. I really have to get back to myfriends though, so if you really want

this

We do. Celine said. But everyone knew she wasnt just talking about the book.

Okay hold out your hands.

Celine obediently did as he said, and when he slowly-and-deliberately handed her the spiral-

bound pages she felt his fingers draw slow circles on the underside of her palms.

Are you giving me your cash?

"How about my body?" thought Celine. But eventually she collected her wits long enough to

hand her money to Jasper, who added his share and handed the whole wad of bills to the seller.

Arent you going to count them? Jasper asked.

Nah, I trust you.

He stood up from his chair now. Celine felt a sense of panic. Like all the good feelings she was

feeling would disappear with him.

Wait! she said. Shouldnt you give us your number, in case she trailed off, lost for a

viable excuse.

In case we have questions. Jasper said. He seemed reluctant for him to leave, too. Celine

brightened and nodded.

Hmm What if you write down your numbers on this napkin?

Celine and Jasper did as they were told. When they handed him the napkin he folded it and

kept it in his jeans back pocket. Ill see you guys around. He winked.

And then he was gone.

Two minutes later, they both realized with amazement that they didnt even ask him hisname.
