Completion of the Phase 4 Milestone of the NuScale Design Certification Application Review

On December 12, 2019, the staff achieved the Phase 4 milestone by completing all 21 chapters of the Advanced Safety Evaluation Report (also referred to as Safety Evaluation Report with No Open Items) and issued them to the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS). The review remains on track to meet the 42-month overall review schedule, to be completed by September 2020.

Public Meeting to Discuss Regulatory Improvements to Support the Licensing of Advanced Reactors

On December 12, 2019, the staff held a public meeting with stakeholders on regulatory improvements to support the licensing of advanced reactors. Topics discussed included the Physical Security Proposed Rule for Advanced Reactors, Technology Inclusive Content of Applications, and the Non-Light Water Reactor Review Strategy. In addition, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission provided a presentation on their licensing approach. The next advanced reactor stakeholders' meeting is planned for February 5, 2020.

Public Meeting to Discuss Lessons Learned from the Turkey Point, Peach Bottom, and Surry Subsequent License Renewal Reviews

On December 12, 2019, the staff held a public meeting to discuss lessons learned from the Turkey Point, Peach Bottom, and Surry subsequent license renewal reviews. The staff and industry presented recommended revisions to the Generic Aging Lessons Learned report and Standard Review Plan for subsequent license renewal. Various options to implement these revisions were discussed, including approaches that would allow for timely implementation so that future applicants and staff could benefit from these efficiencies in the near term. Finalization of the topics and associated schedules will occur over the next few weeks.

Organizational Changes and Conforming Amendments: Final Rule; Correction; 10 CFR . Parts 2 and 52 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations [Regulatory Identifier Number 3150-AK37; NRC-2019-0170]

On December 17, 2019, the NRC published a document in the Federal Register (84 FR 68781) correcting a final rule appearing in the Federal Register on Friday, November 29, 2019 (84 FR 65639), and corrected on December 5, 2019 (84 FR 66561 ). The document amended the NRC's regulations to remove all references to the Office of New Reactors because that office has merged with the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, changing the names of divisions that are affected by the reorganization of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, and making conforming amendments throughout the regulations to reflect the office merger and reorganization . The correction was effective on December 30, 2019.
