SIMFOX - Threat Image Processor & Training / Testing Simulator for X-ray

Introduction

The SIMFOX Threat Image Processor & Training / Testing Simulator for X-ray was developed by

Renful Premier Technologies, following many years of research into ways of providing new X-ray

operators with vital skills and experience, as well as into maintaining the competence levels and

motivation of experienced X-ray operators. SIMFOX is an innovative approach to X-ray training

and testing and incorporates the most advanced Image Processing Technology for instructor

and trainee use. Acknowledging the fact that the unique technologies of SIMFOX cannot be

Screener Assessment and Pre-employment Screening

A good X-ray screener is one who possesses the ability to use his visual memory to store

thousands of images of day-to-day items. While operating the X-ray machine, the screener recalls

the geometrical patterns of these items and visually scans complex X-ray images in order to

identify and locate them. Although we provide X-ray training, we cannot teach the geometrical

patterns of all known items, thus preferring to select and train staff who already possess this

ability of geometrical pattern recall of numerous items. This skill can be assessed initially by

SIMFOX during pre-employment testing and can be further evaluated and developed continually

during training and employment.

Qualifying X-ray Screeners

The process of qualifying X-ray screeners includes theoretical training in the safe use of an

X- ray machine, its features and the identification of threat items. It is said that an operator

can identify only those threat items that he has seen before. It is vital therefore to integrate

lessons on the identification of threat items into X-ray training.

Once an operator passes the initial training and is familiar with threat items and the

operation of an X-ray machine, he still needs to increase his experience in the detection of

threat items, i.e. increase his X-ray image interpretation skills. In other words, the operator

must use an X-ray machine intensively until his newly-gained interpretation skills enable

him to detect a wide variety of threat items within a restricted time.

Although Renful promotes instructor-led classes for X-ray training, we have also developed

unique training technologies to complement and assist instructors in the training and

evaluation of X-ray operators and their newly-gained experience and interpretation skills.

These products are already used by Governments, Police & Customs Authorities, Airports,

Prisons, Houses of Parliament and other high-security installations around the world.

X-ray Operation Assessment and Design

In the operational environment the screener is expected to

detect threat items or select bags for search within a restricted

time, i.e. around 5 seconds per average bag. Utilising Renful’s

expertise and the SIMFOX programme, client instructors can

create test bags, some of which can contain threats inserted by

the Threat Image Processor within SIMFOX; and pass them to the screeners for detection. Analysis

of these combined results of accurate threat detection vs. time can provide true assessment of

employees’ ability to detect threat items within a given time and with varying image complexities.

This enables management to reconsider operational design, study speed of screening and develop

norms for detection.

How SIMFOX Works

SIMFOX comprises three core modules:

a. The Image Processor & Trainer Administration

Utilities, which allows the trainer to build bags

containing items selected from a database of both

normal and threat items; and to save these bags as

either training or testing sessions for the student to

run.

c. The Data Acquisition and Results Management

Module for data acquisition & analysis, which provides

valuable data on operators’ capabilities, including

X-ray interpretation skills, bag processing time, group

categorisation and group performances. In addition, it

assists in establishing performance standards and

norms for groups, bags, and the overall operation.

b. The X-ray Training Simulator, which simulates a

particular X-ray machine and presents the student with

the training or testing sessions containing the bags

that were built by the trainer. After the trainer has

created testing sessions using the Image Processor, the

sessions can be transferred to the student in one of

following ways; by Network, Intranet network or via the

Internet. The student then runs the testing session on

the Training Simulator, following which the results are

transferred back to the trainer (for evaluation and

Summary - The Features & Benefits of SIMFOX

• Alternative X-ray testing systems available comprise a library of composed static bag images,

which have been prepared in advance by the manufacturer of the system and cannot be changed.

Problems occur when students have been presented with the same bags repeatedly, which results in

image recall from memory causing an improvement in threat identification and an apparent increase

in competence; which are artificially generated. SIMFOX provides a solution to this problem by using

a unique algorithm which enables virtual placement of items in bags, thus allowing instructors to

build their own bag images. The instructor can select items and ‘pack’ bags from the supplied image

library, which is divided into categories. By selecting an empty bag and filling it with individual items

of choice, which can be placed in the bag and moved and/ or resized and/ or rotated, an infinite

variety of unique bags can be created. SIMFOX is the only system available that provides this

specialised feature, allowing employees to be presented with fresh items that constantly challenge

their interpretational skills whilst removing their ability to rely on memory to identify threats.

• SIMFOX is available in several X-ray machine types. Every image enhancement and real-time

image manipulation feature incorporated into each type of X-ray machine is reproduced by SIMFOX

and available to the student during SIMFOX training and testing sessions. SIMFOX displays X-ray

images at the same resolution as the X-ray machine it simulates and all normal and threat items have

the correct X-ray signature under all image enhancement features.

ANTI-HANDLING/ BOOBY TRAP KIT

This kit includes 7 individual booby-trap components. Each box is identical, and the only external

signs are the small arming hole in one face of the box. All devices use common 9 volt PP3 type

batteries which can be easily replaced, and all devices use a piezo type buzzer to indicate operation.

Each box is supplied with a common arming pin which is housed inside the box. The boxes use

finger tight fixing screws, and all have hinged lids.

2 blocks of simulated plastic explosive are supplied, one with an inert aluminium detonator and the

other with an inert copper electric detonator. The blocks are profiled to allow them to be inserted

into any of the booby-trap boxes. The detonator leading wires can be easily shown in the attached

position by pushing the wires through the PCB board holes.

The boxes are all marked externally with a numerical reference, indicating the following contents:

• SIMFOX is the most flexible product on the market in terms of threat image processing

and lesson preparation. It allows the instructor to categorise threat items, bags and to alter

decision-making parameters. When creating bags, the trainer can alter the classification

(i.e. threat or non-threat) of any item in the database and choose the expected action

required by the student when the bag is encountered (e.g. cameras and mobile telephones

are threat items in Prisons, but pose no threat in Airports).

• During testing sessions, students are required not only to identify whether a bag poses

a threat, but additionally to identify the position of any and all threat items, to provide

reasoning for their decision (explosive device, firearm, dense area etc.); and to mark the

position(s) of the threat(s). SIMFOX is a highly sophisticated system, which evaluates

students according to a combination of all of the following factors:

a) Correct identification of the position of each and every threat in the bag.

b) Correct naming of each and every threat in the bag.

c) Total time taken for threat identification for each bag.

The X-ray Training & Testing Kit consists of a hard-sided suitcase that

contains the components necessary to construct a variety of simulated

bombs. The bombs can be built by an instructor using a variety of

components and methods. All items contained in the X-ray Training &

signature.

based LAN or WAN package. SIMFOX is able to send/ receive lessons and test results in seconds

over the Internet. Lessons can be conducted with students in the same room, another office or on

the other side of the world. All web-based communication is ultimately secured and cannot be

intercepted by third parties.

• Lessons can be created for training or testing purposes, allowing students to practise threat

recognition before being graded.

• SIMFOX Lesson Review displays the X-ray image seen during the test, alongside photographs,

X-ray views and a detailed description of every individual item within the bag, as well as the bag

itself. It is also possible to view each individual item in isolation within the bag. These features

Every item provided in the kit provides an accurate

X-ray signature. This kit is ideal for use in classroom

training (by demonstrating all the elements and

The X-ray Training & Testing Kit consists of a hard-sided suitcase that

contains the components necessary to construct a variety of simulated

bombs. The bombs can be built by an instructor using a variety of

components and methods. All items contained in the X-ray Training &

Testing Kit are accurate in appearance and give an accurate X-ray

signature.

Simulated plastic explosive sheets that provide real

X-ray signature of explosives. They are as follows:

Different types of mechanism that provide feedback

when activated (light, sound etc, to mark the

• To facilitate the wide variety of establishments requiring a training solution for X-ray, SIMFOX is

supplied as either a single-user package, an Internet based package or a full multi-user classroom

based LAN or WAN package. SIMFOX is able to send/ receive lessons and test results in seconds

over the Internet. Lessons can be conducted with students in the same room, another office or on

the other side of the world. All web-based communication is ultimately secured and cannot be

intercepted by third parties.

• Lessons can be created for training or testing purposes, allowing students to practise threat

recognition before being graded.

• SIMFOX Lesson Review displays the X-ray image seen during the test, alongside photographs,

X-ray views and a detailed description of every individual item within the bag, as well as the bag

itself. It is also possible to view each individual item in isolation within the bag. These features

promote learning by allowing students to fully understand every bag and its contents.

• During SIMFOX Lesson Review, the trainer can see which image enhancement features were

chosen by the student in the case of each bag; in order to arrive at his/ her decisions.

This kit includes 7 individual booby-trap components. Each box is identical, and the only external

signs are the small arming hole in one face of the box. All devices use common 9 volt PP3 type

batteries which can be easily replaced, and all devices use a piezo type buzzer to indicate operation.

Each box is supplied with a common arming pin which is housed inside the box. The boxes use

finger tight fixing screws, and all have hinged lids.

2 blocks of simulated plastic explosive are supplied, one with an inert aluminium detonator and the

other with an inert copper electric detonator. The blocks are profiled to allow them to be inserted

into any of the booby-trap boxes. The detonator leading wires can be easily shown in the attached

position by pushing the wires through the PCB board holes.

The boxes are all marked externally with a numerical reference, indicating the following contents:

• SIMFOX is the most flexible product on the market in terms of threat image processing

and lesson preparation. It allows the instructor to categorise threat items, bags and to alter

decision-making parameters. When creating bags, the trainer can alter the classification

(i.e. threat or non-threat) of any item in the database and choose the expected action

required by the student when the bag is encountered (e.g. cameras and mobile telephones

are threat items in Prisons, but pose no threat in Airports).

• During testing sessions, students are required not only to identify whether a bag poses

a threat, but additionally to identify the position of any and all threat items, to provide

reasoning for their decision (explosive device, firearm, dense area etc.); and to mark the

position(s) of the threat(s). SIMFOX is a highly sophisticated system, which evaluates

students according to a combination of all of the following factors:

a) Correct identification of the position of each and every threat in the bag.

b) Correct naming of each and every threat in the bag.

c) Total time taken for threat identification for each bag.

Summary - The Features & Benefits of SIMFOX

• Alternative X-ray testing systems available comprise a library of composed static bag images,

which have been prepared in advance by the manufacturer of the system and cannot be changed.

Problems occur when students have been presented with the same bags repeatedly, which results in

image recall from memory causing an improvement in threat identification and an apparent increase

in competence; which are artificially generated. SIMFOX provides a solution to this problem by using

a unique algorithm which enables virtual placement of items in bags, thus allowing instructors to

build their own bag images. The instructor can select items and ‘pack’ bags from the supplied image

library, which is divided into categories. By selecting an empty bag and filling it with individual items

of choice, which can be placed in the bag and moved and/ or resized and/ or rotated, an infinite

variety of unique bags can be created. SIMFOX is the only system available that provides this

specialised feature, allowing employees to be presented with fresh items that constantly challenge

their interpretational skills whilst removing their ability to rely on memory to identify threats.

• SIMFOX is available in several X-ray machine types. Every image enhancement and real-time

image manipulation feature incorporated into each type of X-ray machine is reproduced by SIMFOX

and available to the student during SIMFOX training and testing sessions. SIMFOX displays X-ray

images at the same resolution as the X-ray machine it simulates and all normal and threat items have

the correct X-ray signature under all image enhancement features.

How SIMFOX Works

SIMFOX comprises three core modules:

a. The Image Processor & Trainer Administration

Utilities, which allows the trainer to build bags

containing items selected from a database of both

normal and threat items; and to save these bags as

either training or testing sessions for the student to

run.

c. The Data Acquisition and Results Management

Module for data acquisition & analysis, which provides

valuable data on operators’ capabilities, including

X-ray interpretation skills, bag processing time, group

categorisation and group performances. In addition, it

assists in establishing performance standards and

norms for groups, bags, and the overall operation.

b. The X-ray Training Simulator, which simulates a

particular X-ray machine and presents the student with

the training or testing sessions containing the bags

that were built by the trainer. After the trainer has

created testing sessions using the Image Processor, the

sessions can be transferred to the student in one of

following ways; by Network, Intranet network or via the

Internet. The student then runs the testing session on

the Training Simulator, following which the results are

transferred back to the trainer (for evaluation and

uploading into the Data Acquisition and Results

Management Module for statistical analysis).

A good X-ray screener is one who possesses the ability to use his visual memory to store

thousands of images of day-to-day items. While operating the X-ray machine, the screener recalls

the geometrical patterns of these items and visually scans complex X-ray images in order to

identify and locate them. Although we provide X-ray training, we cannot teach the geometrical

patterns of all known items, thus preferring to select and train staff who already possess this

ability of geometrical pattern recall of numerous items. This skill can be assessed initially by

SIMFOX during pre-employment testing and can be further evaluated and developed continually

during training and employment.

Qualifying X-ray Screeners

The process of qualifying X-ray screeners includes theoretical training in the safe use of an

X- ray machine, its features and the identification of threat items. It is said that an operator

can identify only those threat items that he has seen before. It is vital therefore to integrate

lessons on the identification of threat items into X-ray training.

Once an operator passes the initial training and is familiar with threat items and the

operation of an X-ray machine, he still needs to increase his experience in the detection of

threat items, i.e. increase his X-ray image interpretation skills. In other words, the operator

must use an X-ray machine intensively until his newly-gained interpretation skills enable

him to detect a wide variety of threat items within a restricted time.

Although Renful promotes instructor-led classes for X-ray training, we have also developed

unique training technologies to complement and assist instructors in the training and

evaluation of X-ray operators and their newly-gained experience and interpretation skills.

These products are already used by Governments, Police & Customs Authorities, Airports,

Prisons, Houses of Parliament and other high-security installations around the world.

X-ray Operation Assessment and Design

In the operational environment the screener is expected to

detect threat items or select bags for search within a restricted

time, i.e. around 5 seconds per average bag. Utilising Renful’s

expertise and the SIMFOX programme, client instructors can

create test bags, some of which can contain threats inserted by

the Threat Image Processor within SIMFOX; and pass them to the screeners for detection. Analysis

of these combined results of accurate threat detection vs. time can provide true assessment of
