… but not always so great

UAS/RPAS have become a real and significant threat for infrastructures and people due to their errant or malicious use

Evolving and improving really fast

UAS Technology is improving fast to support new and more advanced technical features

Today

Automation and higher sophisticationare the main challenges

Great improvements are at the same time new challenges which increase the threat

Sense and Avoid

GNSS denied navigation Swarm coordinationHeavier cargo delivery

Sense and Attack

Non effective jamming & spoofing countermeasures

More sophisticatedattacks

Airports:

General Framework

It is not the same

Civil vs. Military scenario

Critical vs. Non critical Infra

Small vs. Big area

Area with vs. without people

Urban vs. rural (open) scenario

Fixed vs. Mobile deployment

Each user and scenario requires specific considerations.

Simplicity, Adaptability and Scalability are key features of the solution to support this reality.

General Framework

It is not the same

Airports present really specific and unique challenges

“… we learned the airport environment presents a number of uniquechallenges to the use of technologies available for civil use”

(FAA, Counter UAS Airport Sponsor Letter, July 2018)

Conditioning the specific configuration and performance of any solution

Safety, Security and Efficiency restrictions

Coexistence with current infrastructure, processes and procedures

Performance needs and costs (Coverage distance, interferences, etc.)

Multiple stakeholders (Airport Manager, ANSPs, Security Forces, Air Force, Local Authorities, …)

1. InformationDrones are not detected by current surveillance systems, no informationis available about the location of the threat and the associated risks. This affects both security and safety.

2. Means to handle the threat

Once the drone is discovered, ANSPs and/or airports do not have means to evaluate the severity of the threat and to neutralize it (if required).

3. Coordination

Coordination between airport, security forces and ANSPs is needed to minimize the time necessary to resume air navigation services.

What are the

current

limitations

against this

threat?

kind of operations, in a safe way both for airspace users and

people and assets in the ground.

Securing Airports. A Convergence Approach 20

First step, let’s start with Situational Awareness

There is

technology ready

to detect and

identify small

drones in both

approach flight

paths and airport

perimeter

But we need to clarify non technical issues, such as:

Coordination protocol (steps, role)

Specific regulation (authority)

Certification

Standardization

Considering

C-UAS at

Airports

Page 21: Securing Airports A Convergence ApproachSecuring Airports. A Convergence Approach 16 Indra proposes Indra Air Drones Set of services, delivered jointly by one or more entities, that

Airports have specific and unique challenges

Let’s be ready to face non collaborative “hostile UAS”. Solutions such as Remote ID are only a part of the solution

Convergence approach (ATM, UTM, C-UAS) is the key stone of the solution, including non technical issues (Coordination protocols, specific regulation, …)

There is technology ready to secure airports. Let’s consider a coordinated multi-stage plan

Indra can and wants to contribute to solve this complex puzzle
