Livelihood of a household is secured if it -
has adequate and sustainable access to income and
resources
can meet basic needs (including adequate access to food,
potable water, health facilities, educational opportunities,
housing, time for community participation and social
integration)

Livelihood of a household is sustainable if it -
can cope with and recover from the stress and shocks (arise
from climate change and disaster)
can maintain its capability and assets
provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for the next
generation

Impacts of Climate Change on Development and Livelihood
Climate change (rise of temperature and erratic rainfall and
climatic events: flood, drought, salinity and sea level rise)will affect
Human systems (population, society and economy)
Agriculture: food production and nutrition
Water availability, quality and access to required water
Human health (due to water stress and various diseases) Livelihoods of the poor (assets base, livelihood options,
employment, income and well being)
Infrastructures (houses, roads, embankments andcommunication)
Ecosystems, biodiversity and resources (productivity ofland, water, fisheries, forest etc.)
Disaster preparedness
Development process, poverty alleviation/MDGs

Livelihood promotion (development-oriented programming):
diversification into agro-ecologically appropriate crops and NRM
measures (e.g. resilient crops, soil and water conservation);
creating alternative income-generating activities (e.g. activities to
develop small enterprise);
reinforcing coping strategies that are economically and environmentally
sustainable (e.g. seasonally appropriate off-farm employment);
improving on-farm storage capacity to increase the availability of buffer
stocks;improving common property management through community
participation.

9/21
Livelihood protection (risk reduction/mitigation-oriented
programming)
establishing contingency plans that can be implemented rapidly
before a significant erosion of household assets occurs;protecting household livelihood systems to prevent an erosion of
productive assets (rehabilitation/ mitigation);
detecting local capacity of changes in livelihood and food
insecurity at an early stage;protecting and improving infrastructures to enhance the long-term
viability and resilience of the communities.

10/21
Livelihood provisioning (relief-oriented programming)
provisioning livelihood supports by providing food and meeting
other essential needs to maintain nutritional levels and save lives;
promoting education and household planning initiatives on healthand nutrition;
focusing community for livelihood interventions necessary for
chronically vulnerable populations.

Making house resilient to cyclone/disaster
Provisioning water harvesting and distribution for the community
Raising plinth height of house, school, community places, shelter
Adopting alternative livelihood opportunities, enterprises
Probable change from Boroto Wheat/Maize or other less water needy cropcultivation to reduce the demand of water in cultivation phase
Promote/cultivate crop varieties and species of crops with
increased tolerant to salinity, f lood, drought/heat stresses
