oClearly not everything, but almost…
oTodays communications allow us to achieve things that were almost
unimaginable 10-20 years ago.
oExtraordinary processing power, massive storage farms, Cloud, Internet of
Things/ Everything (IoT), speeds unimagined…
oPersonal computing and “Smart” devices.
oUbiquitous personal communications. Bluetooth, NFC, WiFi, 4G
oEverything is online!
oAnd this becomes the enabler for “wearable” technologies.
4
Connectivity is everything.
HIGHER EDUCATION OVERVIEW
What is wearable technology?
oWearable devices.oHistorically, a fitness tracker. A smart watch... Anextension of your iPhone...
o Increasingly sophisticated, highly functional, and arguably medical grade sensor system
oRelatively low cost, often disposable, and “wireless”
oAn area of rapid innovation and expansion
Wearable medical technologies
oWearables (cont.)oThere is amazing innovation at play
Wearable medical technologies
oWe can collect an amazing and diverse amount of patient data, in real-time
o Increasingly sensors are medical grade…
oWell suited to general medical-surgical monitoring that would not otherwise be
economically viable such as real-time patient vitals, cardio-monitoring, incontinence
monitoring, etc or automating manual collection of patient observations
oWell suited to post-discharge and remote monitoring
Wearables gather more data, in real time, at lower cost
oWearable technology plays a prominent role in today’s healthcare transformation.
Wearables are closely intertwined with an evolving healthcare delivery model.
oAt the same time, many medical devices are becoming smaller and more mobile,
enhancing the patient experience. Opening new alternatives to traditional ways
providers have interacted with patients, performed tests, collected data and
delivered treatments.
oThe increased visibility and awareness of patient lifestyle choices produced by
wearables promotes increased self-care and self-responsibility for an individuals
state of health, thereby reducing the burden on primary and secondary healthcare
services.
How do wearables enhance patient care?
10
Rapidly evolving and growing
HIGHER EDUCATION OVERVIEW
oWearables demand robust, always available connectivity
oEverything is online!
o Industrial strength WiFi.
oStable, high performance, cost-effective WiFi is critical for every
medical institution, healthcare provider, and the patients themselves
11
Connectivity is key.
HIGHER EDUCATION OVERVIEW
oLocation-based Services.oThe ability to identify, locate, and track an entity historically, and in real time.
oA person, patient, clinician, doctor, specialist, etc.
oA device or piece of equipment – an IV pump, crash cart, or a tablet for clinical notes, etc.
oFor our purposes, this is a WiFi-enabled device, or a WiFi or RFID “tag”
Location Based Services
oHow do we track entities using LBS?oUsing WiFi triangulation, we can locate an asset (or person) within ~3-8m
o In real time
oAnd maintain a historical track
oWe can alert staff when an asset/ person moves outside a defined zone by “geo-fencing”
Location Based Services
oMedical applications for LBSoTracking medical equipment – particularly mobile equipment
oTracking key assets – mobile workstations, iPad, tablets, etc.
oAssisting in Positive Patient Identification
oLocating key staff
oTracking patient locations around medical clinics/ hospitals
oGeo-fencing and alerting when equipment or patients move outside their allowable areas
i.e. older patients wandering (escaping! )
oEmergency procedures such as evacuations
oConfirming the location of discharged patients requiring remote monitoring
Applications for Location Based Services
oThe uptake of wearables in healthcare can only accelerate!
oWearables increasingly benefit the patient and provide increasingly
preventative solutions
o Innovation is accelerating.
oBut it all depends on robust, always on, high speed connectivity.
