Appendix. Biomarkers Distribution and Possible Outliers The following descriptive results include the total sample in the final data file released to the public in the MHAS website www.MHASweb.org. The revision of the descriptive results was completed as part of the validation procedures of the laboratory results. During the process, certain possible outliers were identified; the observations presented below do not suggest to include or exclude the mentioned cases when using the MHAS databases. Furthermore, the decision to include or not certain cases is left to each researcher, and the results presented below should not be represented as an argument to include or exclude certain observations. For more information of the procedures to collect the anthropometric and performance measures, and the blood samples please see the “Mexican Health And Aging Study 2012 (MHAS 2012): Manual of Procedures – Anthropometrics and Biological Sample” available in the MHAS website www.MHASweb.org.

Despite the high values the laboratory confirmed the results; because of very high levels of cholesterol found in the Total Cholesterol original results(chol_12) the laboratory repeated the analysis of all samples. For more information please see “Appendix II. Technical Note Regarding the Laboratory Analysis Method to Determining the Cholesterol Results” in the “Mexican Health and Aging Study 2012 (MHAS 2012): Manual of Procedures – Anthropometrics and Biological Sample” available in the MHAS website www.MHASweb.org.

II. High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL) Results For the total 2,003 analyzed samples, the average High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol was 41.2 mg/dL. Even though the largest number in the 90, 95, and 99 percentiles are relatively high, we did not consider those cases as potential outliers. In addition to the visual analysis of the Box Plot (Figure 2), the skewness is consistent to a more symmetric distribution (0.73), compared to the Total Cholesterol results; and the kurtosis is close to 3 indicating no-heaviness in the tails. However, we reported these cases to INSP to validate the results and they were confirmed. The following is a list of the discussed cases.

However, the skewness is consistent to a more asymmetric distribution (13.46) and the kurtosis is significantly higher than 3, indicating heaviness in the tails. We visually identified several potential outliers; in particular a very high value (207.02). We reported the case to INSP to verify the case and they confirmed the result and the value. We also reported the observations with CRP levels of 0; the INSP validated the original results, they also re-analyzed the samples and confirmed the value. Figures 3a and 3b, illustrate the distribution of the CRP results. Figure 3a includes all the analyzed samples and consistent with the skewness and high

About 96% of the cases are within 2 standard deviations. However, we visually identified only 5 potential outliers using a Box Plot (Figure 5, below) with Vitamin D values above 60 ng/mL. Figure 5. Vitamin D Distributional Box Plot

The INSP validated the original results; they also re-analyzed the samples and confirmed these high values.
