It should be made clear that, although this topic has been discussed infor- mally by various Institute members over the past few years, it was not on the Agenda of the Publishing Commit- tee until November 1987. Differents aspects de I'emballage alimentaire nous ont ete presentes par Heather Olivier de Food & Drug Packaging News, Claude Cre- tin de Reiser, Camille Leroux et Anne L'Hereux de Catelli, Jacques Nocquet de Lutetia, Lucille Brisebois de I'Asso- ciation des Consommateurs Cana- diens, Francois Fontaine de Mecaplas- tique, Boileau de Sante et Bien-Etre Canada, Robert Browning d' Air Liquide, Dr. J. Smith du College Macdonald et Gilles Doyon du C.R.A.S.H. Cette activite a ete une reussite. L'animateur Pierre Baril a su captiver I'attention de tous par son dynamisme. Les conferenciers etaient des plus inte- ressants et ils ont su bien repondre aux demandes de I'auditoire. Un panier de provisions alimentaires a ete offert a chacun des conferenciers en remerciement de leur participation. NEWS FROM OTHER ASSOCIATIONS New 1FT Executive Director Howard W. Mattson became Execu- tive Director of the Institute of Food Technologists (1FT) on December 1. Mr. Mattson succeeded Calvert L. Willey, who retired after 27 years with 1FT. As was Mr. Willey, Mattson will also become publisher of Food Tech- nology, 1FT's monthly technical journal. Mattson has been with 1FT since 1973, joining 1FT then as the first direc- tor of its newly formed Public Informa- tion Program. The program he built, based on an Expert Panel on Food Safety and Nutrition and a nationwide system of Regional Communicators, has been much emulated by other scientific societies. Mattson was named Associate Executive Director in April 1985 in anticipation of Willey's retirement. UNIVERSITY NEWS CCUFSA Report The Council of Canadian University Food Science Administrators (CCUFSA) is a body of Department Chairmen of Food Science Departments across Canada. This organization was formed six years ago with the six main Depart- ments contributing and meeting twice a year. The purpose of this body is to bring together the heads of all the food science departments, and in an infor- mal fashion, try to keep informed on the progress and developments within all the departments across Canada. In addition to this major goal, the CCUFSA discusses strategies in terms of giving the discipline of food science credibil- ity and clout, both academically and industrially. A typical example of some of the concerns that the CCUFSA might address would be the dropping of the NSERC strategic food and lA /5
