The camp for all area girls and boys ages 8-13 will take place July 20- 23 and July 27-30 from 9 a.m.-noon dai- ly. Each camper will receive his or her own T-shirt and basketball, and activities will include skill development, games, contests, guest speakers, and much more. The Well operations manager and former Wekiva High School star Miles Dargan is excited to offer the camp to area residents. “As someone who grew up here, I know how special and fun it is to attend basketball camps. I’m honored that Pat- mos Chapel believes so deeply in invest- ing in our local families and this camp is a way to do that. We hope every camp- er will leave not only as a better player but a better young person as well,” Dar- gan said. Dargan said he is particularly ex- cited to announce the camp directors will be Apopka High School boys bas- ketball coach Scott Williams and Ocoee High coach John “Sarge” Siers. “Both coach Siers and coach Williams have run camps for over the past 25 years and bring a wealth of experience and genuine care to the camp,” Dargan said. For Williams, the excitement is two- fold. “First, to be able to give back to our community working closely with Miles who I got to coach is really exciting. Miles is an example of what we hope for our players, to use their basketball tal- ents to help earn a college degree and then to give back into the lives of others and he’s doing just that here at The Well. But I also know that there is a great void this summer for young kids because our Blue Darter Basketball camp was can- celled and I’m really looking forward to hopefully serving those families through the two weeks of this camp.” Each session of camp is $80 if pre-registered by the Friday prior to camp and $90 at the door. For infor- mation about the camp or to register a child, contact coach Williams by email ([email protected]) or by phone (863-521-1120). Plans call for the Apopka Blue Darters football team to begin vol- untary summer conditioning drills on Monday, July 6, but coach Jeff Rol- son said that, because of COVID-19, players must do the necessary paper- work completed by filing it online and also must get their annual physicals on their own. Normally, coaches and athletic trainers at Apopka High work with the players to get the physicals and paper- work completed in time for summer workouts. “Now, it’s going to be on them and it’s got to be uploaded by them,” Rolson said. “Their physicals have to be got- ten by them. “We’re going to meet as a staff and talk about how we’re going to get that done. They need to have that stuff done by Wednesday of next week so it can get checked off on that Thurs- day and Friday so we can build our groups over the weekend and know what time they’re coming in and who they’re working with because they have to work with the same coach.” Rolson said that coaches will be contacting players to get them in- formation individually but that stu- dents and/or their parents should vis- it https://athleticclearance.fhsaahome. org/ for uploading the necessary pa- perwork. The idea of wearing the world loosely is meant to convey

the idea that we should take things in stride and give up our rigidly held ideas about how things should be. No doubt things are unfolding exactly as they should, and our limited minds cannot always see the big picture. On the surface, and to our egocentric points of view, things often seem wrong

or even absurd, but often we cannot comprehend the larger picture, nor do we always know the purpose that God has for us in the world. We should strive to trust in God and try to do his will with a sense of resignation for all the messiness and seeming injustice in the world. And this doesn’t mean that we just give up, but rather that we try to be effective in the world while also

realizing that we are finite, limited creatures with narrow views and debilitating weaknesses. Wearing the world loosely entails moving through the world with ease and the realization that much of what we do will not reach the goals which we had in mind, and yet God is still in his heaven and all is right with the world. –Christopher Simon

By Teresa Sargeant Apopka Chief Staff

Changes are abound-ing at the nonprofit organi-zation Apopka Pregnancy Care Center that includes relocating to a more cen-tralized site in downtown Apopka for easier access to women and families.

The center is also get-ting an ultrasound machine later this month, donated by the Knights of Columbus.

Once the coronavi-rus pandemic winds down, the center is looking to es-tablish abortion recovery classes on Monday nights, which Lori Tolliver, the center’s board president, will teach.

“Ever since the COV-ID virus came out, it’s been kind of miraculous that we made such huge strides in our changes with the cen-ter,” Tolliver said.

Almost a month ago, the Apopka Pregnancy Care Center moved from its old site on Old Dixie Hwy, Apopka, to 111 E. Sixth Street, Apopka. The center was located on Old Dixie Highway for 13 years until April 2019.

Tolliver became the center’s board president in October 2019.

“Ever since then, we had been talking about how much we need to get more central (in) Apopka be-cause the ladies had to take a bus to get to us and a bus home, and that was a chal-lenge for them. I’m not one to hear that we need to do something; we just have to start doing it,” Tolliver said.

The nonprofit is a Christ-centered organiza-

tion that uses the biblical approach in helping wom-en affected by unplanned pregnancies. Resources in-clude pregnancy tests; edu-cation on pregnancy, abor-tion, and adoption, and par-enting; clothing and fur-nishings; and housing, medical, and social servic-es referrals for families.

Between 40 and 45 women were seen per month at the center’s old location. Tolliver said that once the community knows about the center’s new site, client numbers are expect-ed to double by the end of the year due to the walking distance for many women.

The center gets several repeat clients, too, since it helps families of children up to 2 years of age.

Victory Church, the Apopka Pregnancy Care

Center’s new landlord, will do a dedication ceremo-ny on Sunday, July 5. Lo-cated on South Park Ave-nue across the street from City Hall, Victory Church is headed by Senior Pastor Doug Bankson, who also serves as a city commis-sioner. The congregation will tour the facility.

The center had its soft opening in mid-June, and is waiting to hear from the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce on ribbon cut-ting details.

The center’s annual Baby Bottle Boomerang Fundraiser, which previ-ously lasted for one month, will start on Sunday, July 5, and run through Monday, September 7, Labor Day. The fundraiser collects spare pocket change, cash, and checks in baby bottles.

Last year, $17,000 was col-lected.

To participate, pick up a bottle by contacting the center at 321-356-2937 to get a bottle or visit www.apcc.life to donate online. Bottles must be returned September 7 to the Apop-ka Pregnancy Care Center, 111 E. Sixth Street, Apop-ka, 32703.

Hello Folks,

Wow, summer is here and it’s here with a bang. We are havin’ some hot days as of late and I don’t know about you, but I’m not gettin’ much in the way of afternoon show-ers. I would like to tell ya the fishin’ is good but due to the hot days not many folks are gettin’ out and goin’ fishin’. The recent spike in the virus isn’t helpin’ either.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that the folks in his area aren’t fish-in’ too much either. Kyle has a couple of anglers still catchin’ specks under the

Highway 417 bridge, in Lake Jesup. They are fishin’ under the bridge with minners and catchin’ enough for supper. The good news is the bridge does provide some shade while people are fishin’. If you decide to go fishin’, please

make sure you take along plenty of water and Gatorade. You need to start drinkin’ be-fore you get thirsty because if you wait too long, it’s gonna be too late. Kyle reports that the bluegills and shellcrack-ers have slowed down just a little. You can still catch ’em but you need to be on the wa-ter early with some red worms or crickets. Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup and the St. Johns River have been the best plac-es to catch ’em. You can still catch some bass on shiners real early in the mornin’ or late in the day. Folks are get-tin’ out early and takin’ ad-vantage of the mornin’ bite.

You will have about four hours of fishin’ before the hot weather takes over. You can also catch ’em late in the day at dark-thirty till dark. You might try fishin’ at night just because it probably it’s a little cooler durin’ the night.

We have a full moon over the July 4 weekend, so take advantage of the cooler weather at night and the full moon. Over the years of fish-in’ here in Florida, we fished our club tournaments in the summer at night. It was cool-er and we always caught some nice bass. I caught one of my biggest bass, a 10-pounder durin’ a night tournament at

East Lake Toho. So, if you are game, give it a try. You might just get a chance to catch a big bass or, possibly, your personal best.

Kyle has been catchin’ some bass at John’s Lake. He had the chance to go fish-in’ this week and he reports that he caught 10 bass and a couple of good ones around 3 pounds to 4 pounds each. He caught his bass early in the mornin’ on top-water lures and then as the sun got up, he started fishin’ a plas-tic worm real slow around the submerged hydrilla beds. As it got hotter, the bite slowed but he was able to catch a few

bass fishin’ in deep water. This is a good time to be

on the lookout for schoolers. Kyle reports that schoolers came up around him while he was fishin’ in the deeper parts of the lake, so make sure you keep a lipless crank-bait tied on to one of your rods. Those schoolers won’t stay up long so you need to have a rod ready just in case they school up near your boat.

Well, that’s it for this week. I hope y’all have a good week and pray for some rain to come our way.

Tip of the week: full moon on Sunday. Save a few and good luck!

Xfinity Series regular Brandon Jones had quite a day at Pocono Raceway on Sunday. In the first of three races at the track, he retook the lead from Sheldon Creed on the final lap

of Sunday’s Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series race to score his first Truck Series win in 46 career starts. Then, about an hour later, he was back in his No. 19 Toyota in the Xfinity Series but slammed into the wall on the opening lap after some contact with Austin Cindric. In the truck race, Jones, who has two Xfinity victories, was driving the potent No. 51 Toyota for Kyle Busch Motorsports. He had taken the lead when his teammate Christian Eckes blew a tire and wrecked while leading with 11 laps to go. Jones held the top spot until the final restart with two laps remaining. Creed, who led a race-high 31 laps and won both of the open-ing stages, used a bold three-wide move to take the lead, but slipped just enough to allow Jones to retake the top spot and drive on to

victory. Austin Hill also passed Creed to finish second with Creed, Todd Gilliland and Ben Rhodes completing the top five. Jones said winning in the Kyle Busch-owned truck was a dream come true. “When I first started racing in my life, I saw the 51 late model and said I wanted to race with Kyle Busch Motorsports one day and win races,” he said. “We finally did it. We’ve been close in the past. ... That was a heck of a battle, and I know it was fun to watch on TV. It was really fun for me there.” Creed said he lost the race when he let Jones get to his outside coming to the white flag. “I gave it away, honestly,” Creed said in his televised post-race interview. “I gave him the top on the front straightaway. That’s where the race was won, right there.

“I should have stayed on the top and let him get next to me and then see what he did to me in Turn One.” The 60-lap race was plagued by wrecks, which led to a Pocono Truck Series record nine caution flags, with 29 of the race’s 60 laps run under the yellow flag. Among those eliminated by wrecks was for-mer series champion Matt Crafton, who was collected in a crash in Turn One of the open-ing lap. Ty Majeski also wrecked early after driving from 19th to third place in the first 13 laps. He took the blame, saying he tried to block Grant Enfinger but didn’t have the room he needed. One series regular, Natalie Decker, did not compete at Pocono as she was hospitalized due to bile duct issues.

Kevin Harvick has checked off another box in what is shaping up to be a Hall of Fame career. After his win in Saturday’s Pocono Or-ganics 350 at Pocono Raceway, there are just two tracks on NASCAR’s Cup Series circuit where he has yet to win. One is Kentucky Speedway, and the other is the relatively new ROVAL at Charlotte Mo-tor Speedway. Harvick now has 52 career Cup victories and three this season, all since racing re-sumed following a 10-week hiatus due to the coronavirus. The other two were at Darling-ton and Atlanta. His Pocono win came on his 39th try at the

2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle” in the Pennsylva-nia mountains. He’d had 13 previous top-fi ve fi nishes, including four runner-up fi nishes, but no victories until Saturday. For much of the race, Harvick and the rest of the fi eld were chasing his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Aric Almirola, who started on the pole and led a race-high 61 laps and won Stage Two. But while Almirola was on a two-pit-stop strategy, Harvick’s crew chief Rodney Childers called for three stops, and when the drivers all made their fi nal stops with just under 40 laps to go, Harvick took just two tires and a half-tank of fuel, while Almirola

took longer for four tires and a full tank of gas. Harvick cycled into the lead with 17 laps remaining, and Denny Hamlin, on a similar strategy, took over the runner-up spot as Almirola tried to work his way forward. But with no caution fl ags over the fi nal third of the race, he couldn’t track down the lead duo and wound up third over rookie Christopher Bell and Kyle Busch. Harvick said he hasn’t been too upset not to win at Pocono, but nonetheless was glad to fi nally close out a race with a victory. “We’ve run plenty good enough to win races here,” he said in his winner’s interview. “It’s kind of like Texas. We fi nally knocked down that wall and won three years in a row. Hope-fully, that’s the same trend that happens here at Pocono.” Hamlin, who added a sixth Pocono win a day later, was dealing with a vibration in his No. 11 Toyota but said that wasn’t a factor in the fi nish. “I probably should have run the bottom there coming to the white [fl ag],” he said. “We were making some good time on the bottom. I ‘overthunk’ it, thought he was going to try to go down there. I ended up running his line and messed up. That’s about it.” Almirola said that while he didn’t win, he was proud of his team’s effort, which helped him post his second straight third-place fi nish, the fi rst coming at Talladega Super-

speedway. Those fi nishes followed a fi fth- place at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “We opted to go and score as many stage points as we could and try to out-point them today,” he said. “It got us a couple spots short of a victory. Still had a really fast car, the Smithfi eld Ford Mustang. We’re keeping momentum going.” Bell, a rookie in Cup, gave his crew chief Jason Ratcliff much of the credit for the best fi nish of his 14-race Cup career. “Whenever I started working with Jason two years ago in the Xfi nity Series — well, even before that — I started following him and I knew he was really aggressive on strategy to get his driver up front,” Bell said. “Seems like the majority of the racetracks that we’ve been to the last couple of weeks have just been put four tires on and go. But Pocono is defi nitely a place where you can mix up strategy, pit early, pit before the stages and so forth. “Obviously, Jason did a great job and got us up front, and we had the car speed to stay up there.” With Michael McDowell’s eighth-place fi nish in the Pocono Organics 325 combined with John Hunter Nemechek’s eighth-place effort at Talladega Superspeedway, Front Row Motorsports has scored consecutive top-10 fi nishes for the fi rst time in its 16 seasons in NASCAR. It also was McDowell’s best fi nish in his fi rst 16 Pocono starts.

Kevin Harvick finally notches a Pocono Raceway win

Chase Briscoe overcame not one, but two setbacks to take the victory in Sunday’s Xfinity Series race at Pocono Raceway. Briscoe was nabbed for speeding on pit road, then had a flat tire that knocked him out of the lead with just 23 laps to go. But he quickly drove through the field and took the lead and the win with a last-lap pass of Ross Chastain, who finished second but collected the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus from series sponsor Xfinity. It was Briscoe’s fourth win of the sea-son and the sixth of his Xfinity career. Journeyman independent driver Jeremy Clements wound up third over Myatt Snider and Michael Annett. “We had the lead there after I sped on pit road, and I was a little worried, but, fortu-

nately, a lot of the good cars got torn up, so that made it a little bit easier to get back through the field,” Briscoe said. “And then me and Ross — it was pretty fun. He’s always one of the hardest guys to race against and pass, and just really cool to get [to] Victory Lane.” Like the truck race before it, the Xfinity run produced a record number of caution flags for the series at Pocono. The race was slowed nine times for 31 laps. That opened the way for several underdog drivers to score strong finishes. In addition to Clements in third place, Timmy Hill finished eighth and Jesse Little was 10th. Also posting unusually good finishes were Dexter Bean in 11th, Ryan Vargas in 13th, B.J. McLeod in 14th and Kyle Weatherman in 15th.

It was a case of spin and win for Chase Briscoe, who overcame a spinout to win Sunday’s Xfi nity Series race at Pocono Raceway.

In Sunday’s second half of a Pocono Raceway doubleheader, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick reversed their roles from Saturday, with Hamlin taking the win, his sixth at Pocono, while Harvick finished sec-ond for the fifth time in his career at that track. Sunday’s Pocono 350 started late due to lightning, was delayed by rain and ran nearly until dark. Kurt Busch dominated the early going, leading all 30 laps of Stage One. Brad Keselowski won Stage Two, a 55-lapper, but the final segment of the race boiled down to another battle between Harvick and Hamlin. Harvick took the early lead, then made his final pit stop from the lead with 36 laps left to run. He took two tires and fuel and rejoined the race while Hamlin, who inherited the lead, spent the next 15 laps stretching his lead before making his final stop with 21 laps to go.

When the pit stops cycled out, Hamlin had a comfortable lead over Harvick and maintained it to the finish line to secure his series-leading fourth win of the season and the 41st of his career, which put him in 19th place on the Cup circuit’s all-time win list. Hamlin said crew chief Chris Gabehart had a winning pit strategy, and that was the dif-ference in outrunning Harvick on Sunday. “You have to work [the strategy], but ulti-mately, the two fastest cars finished one-two both days,” Hamlin said. “I think that there’s no secret there, and this team has been strong every week. “We’re in contention to win every single week, and that’s all you can ask for as a race car driver. “We’re just on a roll right now.” Harvick said fate dealt Hamlin a better hand on Sunday. “[Hamlin] just did the opposite of what we did,” Harvick said of the final pit stops. “We

didn’t want to get caught with a caution and then wound up losing a little bit too much time in lapped traffic with all the cars that hadn’t pitted. “He was out there running clean laps and waited ’til right to the very end (to pit) and wound up in front of us. “I’m proud of everybody on our team. [Saturday, strategy] won us the race, and [Sunday] we finished second.” Erik Jones finished third over Chase Elliott and Aric Almirola, who scored his fourth straight top-five finish. Several contenders were taken out in crash-es, including Christopher Bell, who finished third in the first stage before crashing, and Kyle Busch, who wrecked after contact with Ryan Blaney. Busch declined to discuss the crash when interviewed on TV. “I know what happened, but it doesn’t make any sense to talk about it,” he said. “It will just come across in a bad

way.” Busch, the defending series champion, is now winless in the first 15 races of the sea-son, although he does have seven top-five finishes.
