SECTION A Admissions and Applications
We welcome applications from anyone, of any age, gender or nationality, seeking to explore the
frontiers of business management to improve the well-being of our societies. Your application to us
will be handled by our dedicated Global MBA administrative staff and you can be assured of a
personal and professional service. Our staff will help you with any queries that you might have and
keep you informed of your application’s progress.
1. Course Information
Students are required to complete units to the value of forty-six credits within the two-year
registration period to be awarded the Masters of Business Administration (Global Course).

2. Admissions criteria
2.1 Eligibility Our minimum requirements are as follows:
2.1.1 Academic requirements
A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university is mandatory and therefore
applicants are required to meet one of the following requirements at the time of application.
(1) Those who have a bachelor’s degree or above from a university outside of Japan and
have completed minimum sixteen years of school education, or who expect to obtain
the degree and to complete such education before September 20, 2012.
(2) Those who have a bachelor’s degree or above from a university in Japan, or who
expect to obtain before September 20, 2012.
(3) Those who have a certificate of completion for fifteen years of school education outside
of Japan and are recognized by the Graduate School of Business as having obtained a
high level of academic excellence. In this case, you are advised to consult with the
Graduate School of Business in advance by submitting a preliminary application to
confirm your academic eligibility.

i. In addition to the admission criteria mentioned in (1) and (2), applicants may also
consult with the Graduate School of Business in advance by submitting a preliminary

ii. For the process of preliminary application, please see our website
(http://gmba.doshisha.ac.jp). We will respond to your preliminary application within
approximately five working days.
iii. If you are expected to graduate in 2012, please make sure to obtain a bachelor’s
degree before September 20, 2012 to fulfill one of the above requirements. Otherwise
admission to the Business School will be denied even if your application was
successful.
2.1.2 GMAT score
Applicants are required to demonstrate a level of aptitude suitable for a post-graduate
level business and management degree. This would be normally demonstrated through the
submission of a GMAT score or equivalent. Please refer to section 3.2 Required documents
on pages 6 - 9 for further details.
2.1.3 Work experience
In principle, work experience over a certain period of time is required. (For your information,
the average student at our program has 3 to 5 years work experience, some with
considerably more.)
2.1.4 English language requirements (for non-native English speakers only)
This requirement is waived for candidates who are a native English speaker or who have
received a bachelor's degree from a university where the medium of instruction was
English.
If English is not your native language, you are required to take an English language
assessment test. We accept the following scores. If it is not clear whether you need a
language test or your score/test result is sufficient for application, please consult with
Business School by submitting your preliminary application in advance. Please see our
website (http://gmba.doshisha.ac.jp) or consult with the Graduate School of Business for
further information.

Note:
The English language test must be internationally recognized. However, a score certificate
from the local English test may be acceptable on condition that the certificate can be
provided with the official comparison to one of the above scores that are recognized
globally.
2.1.5 Preliminary application
We evaluate applicants as a whole person rather than mechanically applying these
eligibility criteria mentioned above. In case it is not certain whether you are eligible to

apply or not, please feel free to consult with the Graduate School of Business by
submitting your preliminary application in advance. For further information, please see

2.2 Fees and scholarship
2.2.1 Course fees
The GMBA course fees for 2012 students are as follows.

Notes:
i. Students who have obtained their undergraduate or graduate degrees at Doshisha
University will be charged half of the admission fee, i.e. 140,000 yen.
ii. The credit tuition fee for the fall semester of the first year will be charged after you
have registered for your classes. The credit tuition fee will depend on the number of
credits you register for in any one semester.
iii. In case a student enrolls in more than 2 years, there will be the fee for educational support
per semester and credit tuition fee depending on the number of credits registered.
iv. If a student has already taken the maximum of 46 credits and wishes to register for
more classes, there will be a charge of 48,000 yen per credit.
2.2.2 Scholarship
We are delighted to announce that there are a number of scholarship opportunities. For
your reference, ALL SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE
TUITION FEE REDUCTION BETWEEN 30% and 100%. Please refer to the Global MBA
webpage (http://gmba.doshisha.ac.jp/apply/furtherinformation.html) for the latest full
information.
3. Applications
3.1 Process
3.1.1 Check your eligibility
Please check 2.1 Eligibility above and confirm if you are eligible to apply. In case where you
are required to consult with the Graduate School of Business for confirmation of your

eligibility, please submit a preliminary application well in advance. Please see our website
(http://gmba.doshisha.ac.jp/apply/applicationprocess.html) for full information.
3.1.2 Formal application
To submit a formal application you need to complete the application form (which can be
downloaded from our webpage) and return it to us with all supporting documentation and
the application fee before the advertised deadlines. Upon receipt of your completed
application form and other application materials, the Graduate School of Business will send
you an acknowledgement message by email.
3.1.3 Interview
We will consider your application form, personal statement, transcripts, references and
GMAT score and English language test score as well where necessary, to assess your
suitability for the program. Then, we will invite you to an interview.
Overseas applicants:
The interview will be conducted online where possible.
Domestic applicants:
Applicants will be invited to a face-to-face interview at Doshisha Business School, Kyoto.
3.1.4 Notification of acceptance
Following the interview a final decision will be made on your application by the GMBA
Admissions Committee and you will be notified of their decision shortly thereafter. Should
you be offered a place you will receive a Notification of Acceptance from the Office of
International Students who handles university registration procedures. Please see Section
B below for more information.
3.1.5 Initial registration procedures
You will need to complete registration procedures (including immigration procedures for
the overseas applicants) and pay the admission fee to secure your place. Please see Section
B below for more information.

Application form
Applicants must use the formal application form available for download from our webpage
(http://gmba.doshisha.ac.jp). In order to complete the form, you will need to have Microsoft Excel
installed on your computer. You are required to complete all fields and send the application form to
us by email and post. It is essential that the completed form reaches Doshisha University before the
stated deadline.
University Graduation Certificate(s) (or Certificate of Expected Graduation)
This should be an official document (original) issued by the university level institute(s) attended. If
you are currently attending the university, please submit the proof that you will complete the
program by September 20, 2012, i.e. Certificate of Expected Graduation. Please see Important notes
below for further information.
Academic transcript(s)
This should be an official document (original) issued by the university level institute(s) attended. The
document should include detailed results of all classes and courses taken. If applicants are still
attending the university and therefore cannot obtain the final academic grades at the time of
application, please submit the latest official record and the final transcript must be submitted as
soon as it becomes available. Please see Important notes below for further information.
Two letters of recommendation
The letter of recommendation is an extremely important part of the selection process. Applicants
must use the official form available for download from our webpage.
Two letters of recommendation should be written by people who know the applicant well.
If you have left education within the last three (3) years, you should give one academic and
one employment-related reference. Otherwise, give two employment-related references.
Academic recommendation: You should approach an academic referee who can comment
on your academic and intellectual ability in detail. They should be able to assess your
ability to analyze and apply theoretical frameworks to practical situations, and to present a
cogent and coherent argument.
Employment-related recommendation: You should approach employment referees who
will be able to give a broad overview of your managerial skills and experience in detail.
They should also be able to assess your potential for learning and applying new
management skills.
If the letter is in a language other than English or Japanese, please attach an English (or
Japanese) translation by a certified public institution such as a diplomatic office.
Letters of Recommendation must be submitted in a sealed and signed envelope.
Certificate of English Language Proficiency (for non-native English speakers)
We accept original copies of the following qualifications as proof of language competence: TOEIC,
TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Examination. You can arrange with the test institution to send the score
directly to Doshisha University. Please also see 2.1.4 above for this requirement. Please seek further
information on our website and/or from the Business School office. If you would like us to return this
score certificate, please include a written request in your application package. Otherwise the score
certificate will not be returned and we will not accept any request at a later date.

GMAT official score report
You are required to submit an official GMAT score report. Please send your GMAT score report to us
via the official GMAT website. The Program Code of the Global MBA at Doshisha University is
QJK-PK-35. Please refer to the official GMAT website for further information. If you are unable to
submit a GMAT score, you should seek advice from the office directly in advance.
Personal identification material(s)
For international applicants from overseas: Please submit a photocopy of the passport page(s)
showing your photo, full name, nationality and other identification information. In case you do
not have a passport yet, please submit a photocopy of an Identification Certificate issued by the
government or its equivalent public institution in your home country.
For international applicants residing in Japan: Please submit a photocopy of the passport
page(s) showing your photo, full name nationality and other identification information as well as
the page in which your visa status AND period of stay are listed. Alternatively, you can submit a
photocopy of your Alien Registration Card. In this case please make sure that the information on
your Alien Registration Card is most updated at the time of application. In addition, you must
copy both front and back sides of the card.
For applicants with Japanese nationality:
Please submit a photocopy of the passport page showing your photo, full name, nationality and
other identification information. In case you do not have a passport, please submit a photocopy
of a document that certifies your identity issued by the government or its equivalent public
institution in Japan.
Note:
Please make a photocopy of your personal identification material(s) using A4 size or letter size
paper.
Application fee receipt
You will need to provide certified evidence that the application fee has been paid for your formal
application to be considered. This will normally take the form of a receipt provided by your bank
confirming the transfer, or if you pay online with a credit card, it will be the Result page that you can
print out after the transaction is completed. Please note that the application fee is non-refundable.
Please refer to section 3.5 below for the method of payment.

Two Photographs
You are required to affix two photographs to the application form and photograph card which are
available to download from our webpage. Photographs should be in color and taken within the
previous three months. These should be full face and without any hat or other head covering. The
photos should be 3cm long × 2.4cm wide.
Important notes:
i. If it is found that you have misrepresented the facts in your application, you may be dismissed
from the school.
ii. If documents other than those prepared by the applicant are in a language other than English or

Japanese, it will be the responsibility of the applicant to attach an official English (or Japanese)
translation certified by a public authority or a notary public institution.
iii. Please submit original documents unless the submission of photocopy is instructed.
iv. Applicants may submit the notarized photocopies of University Graduation Certificate and
Academic Transcript only in the case where the university attended by the applicant does not
reissue the original copy of these official documents. In this case the photocopy must be
authenticated by the university attended by the applicant (or a certified public institution such as
a notary public office). Please note that these notarized photocopies will not be returned.
v. Application materials will not be returned regardless of the result of application. Exceptions are
Certificate of English Language Proficiency (original), University Graduation Certificate
(original) and Academic Transcript (original) and please note that you must include a written
request in your application package. Otherwise materials will not be returned under any
circumstances and please be aware that we will not accept any request at a later date.
vi. The university may require the submission of documents other than those listed above.
3.3 Important dates Application for 2012 entry admission will open December 1, 2011. Detailed schedule for each
application round is as follows. We have six application rounds. Your application package must be
received by Doshisha University on or before each deadline to be considered for each round. A late
or incomplete application leaves you at risk of not being considered for a place and if you have any
queries at this stage do not hesitate to contact us for guidance.

(3) Round 5: Overseas applicants for Round 5 must be well prepared in order to apply for the

Certificate of Eligibility:
This is an official document issued by the Immigration Bureau in Japan and required for successful
applicants to obtain a College Student visa. Please see Section B below for more information.
(4) Round 5: Successful applicants of Round 5 must note that the due date of admission fee payment
is set much earlier than the other application round.
(5) *Round 6: This round is a special period available only for applicants who meet the conditions
mentioned below therefore do not need to apply for the Certificate of Eligibility.
Eligible applicants for Round 6:
Only applicants who meet one of the following conditions are eligible to apply to Round 6:
i. Those who have Japanese nationality.
ii. Those who have foreign nationality currently residing in Japan and will continue to
reside in Japan for the entire period between application and enrollment.
iii. Those who are currently residing outside Japan but have obtained either “Permanent
Resident”, “Long-Term Resident”, “Spouse or Child of Japanese National”, or “Spouse
or Child of Permanent Resident” visa.
iv. Those who are able to prove as having qualifications equivalent to ii and iii above and
therefore do not need to newly apply for the Certificate of Eligibility. If you have any
concerns about your eligibility for Round 6, please consult with the Graduate School
of Business in advance.
(6) Please note that these dates are subject to revision where necessary.
3.4 Application fee All applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee as follows.
Fee for international applicants (including foreign residents of Japan): 15,000 yen
Fee for applicants with Japanese nationality: 35,000 yen
You will need to provide certified evidence that the above fee has been paid for your formal
application to be considered. This will normally take the form of a receipt provided by your bank
confirming the transfer. Please note that there will be a transaction fee 2,500 yen for overseas
remittance to Japan. Alternatively you can also pay the application fee by a credit card however there
will be a processing fee of 473 yen for online payments. Please see 3.5 Method of application fee
payment below for detailed information.
3.5 Method of application fee payment

to the application fee. (The total amount remitted should therefore be 17,500 yen for
international applicants and 37,500 yen for applicants with Japanese nationality.)

A form for Telegraphic Transfer at a bank is available for applicants residing in Japan. Please

are NOT able to accept remittances made from an ATM, JP Bank (post office account) or in
cash.
3.5.2 Payments by Credit Card
You may pay your application fee online with a credit card. Please follow the procedures on
how to make an online payment. Please note that the website can be only accessed by
computer and is available in English only.

Important notes:
i. Please make all credit card payments before 23:00 (Japan Standard Time) of the
deadline date for each application period.
ii. There will be a processing fee of 473 yen for online credit card payment.
iii. A third party member may pay on the applicant’s behalf. However, please make sure
to enter the applicant’s personal details on the Basic Information page.
iv. After the transaction is completed, please print out two copies of the Result page on
A4 or letter-size paper. Submit one copy with the application materials. Please keep
the other copy and write down the Receipt Number for your reference. (It is not
necessary to paste it onto the Pasteboard for the Receipt of Remittance that is
required to submit when you pay the application fee with a form for Telegraphic
Transfer at a bank.)
v. If you forget to print out the Result page, please go to the Application Results page
and enter the Receipt Number and your date of birth to view the page again.
vi. The payment confirmation will be sent to the email address you registered.
vii. The transaction will be in Japanese yen. Please note that the conversion rate will apply
at the time of the transaction. Please contact your credit card company for further
details.
viii. If you have any credit card verification issues, please contact your credit card
company.
3.6 Submitting your application (1) Submission of application form by email: Please send your completed application form by
email. Please do not send incomplete application form or other materials. If you have any
questions how to fill in the form, please contact us. Your application form should be saved as
“<your full name> 2012 GMBA” and sent to [email protected] , and the subject of
your email must be “SUBMISSION GMBA 2012 Application”.
(2) Submission of hard copy: Please also send a hard copy of the application form with all the
supporting documentation by EMS or international courier service, to the address below. If you
are a domestic applicant, we advise you to send the package by registered mail. Please write in
English on the front of the envelope: “GLOBAL MBA PROGRAM APPLICATION”. Please note that
application package must be received by Doshisha University on or before each deadline to be
considered for each round.
(3) Applicants must send all the application materials in one package, except for the original GMAT
official score repot and IELTS/TOEFL/TOEIC score report(s) that are required or available to be
sent from the test institution(s) directly. Official documents from the university attended by the
applicant and/or letters of recommendation may be sent directly to the Graduate School of
Business only when circumstances require.
3.7 Protection of personal information Doshisha University is dedicated to collecting, handling, storing and using any personal identifiable
information securely and properly. Following the enforcement of the “Act on the Protection of
Personal Information”, Doshisha University defined the “Basic Policy on Protection of Personal
Information” regarding the handling of personal information. Based on this policy for safe guarding
personal information, the “Regulations on Protection of Personal Information” has been established.
We ensure that such information will be handled and protected appropriately and that we will use
applicants’ personal information only for the purpose of contacting them and making statistics of
entrance examination and database of students admitted.

3.8 Important notes (1) Applications for 2012 entry will close when the program reaches full capacity and prospective
students are therefore encouraged to submit early applications.
(2) Please note that the Business School office will be closed from December 28, 2011 to January 5,
2012, and from the end of April 2012 to early May 2012. All enquires/messages received on
holidays (or weekends) will be responded to during normal office hours. Please check our website
for latest information on dates and office hours.

SECTION B Registration procedures
1. Overview
Registration procedures are handled by the Office of International Students. Upon acceptance,
applicants must complete the following procedures. Admission will be denied if the applicant does
not complete these procedures by the deadline. Please refer to the guide for initial registration
procedures enclosed in the Notification of Acceptance for further details and contact the Office of
International Students for queries using the contact information below.
2. Initial registration procedures
2.1 Initial registration fees Applicants are required to pay an Initial Registration Fee. This consists of two components:
1. Admission Fee (deposit) *
2. Fee for Educational Support
* The Admission Fee may be regarded as a non-refundable deposit and commits the applicant to
entry to the Global MBA.
2.2 International applicants residing overseas (Round 1-5) [Step 1] Applicants must pay the Admission Fee (deposit) by the advertised date which will be
available in the guide for initial registration procedures. Applicants are also required to submit all
necessary documents to the Office of International Students who will then act as your proxy to
obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence (college student) in Japan from the
Immigration Bureau at the Ministry of Justice. Please refer to the guide for initial registration
procedures for details on required documents.
[Step 2] After the Office of International Students receives the Certificate of Eligibility from the
Immigration Bureau at the Ministry of Justice, the applicant will be required to complete payment of
the remaining components of initial registration fee (Fee for Educational Support). As soon as the
university has confirmed receipt of this payment, a Certificate of Eligibility and Admission Certificate
documents will be sent to the applicant.
[Step 3] Upon receiving the Certificate of Eligibility and the Admission Certificate after [Step 2]
above, the applicant must apply for a Status of Residence (college student) by bringing these
documents to the Japanese Embassy or a Japanese Consulate in their home country. Also, after
arrival in Japan, applicants must complete submission of the following required forms by September
7, 2012. (See 3. Secondary registration procedures below.)

Applicants who are foreign residents of Japan should consult with the Office of International
Students directly concerning their visa status. Please note that you may have to extend or change
your visa status. In this case you will require an Admission Certificate from the Office of International
Students and this can only be issued after payment of all components of the initial registration fee.
2.4 Applicants with Japanese nationality (Round 1-6) Applicants must pay the Admission Fee (deposit) by the advertised date which will be available in
the guide for initial registration procedures. Applicants will then be required to complete the
payment of the remaining components of initial registration fee (Fee for Educational Support) by the
advertised date and the submission of required documents by September 7, 2012. (See 3. Secondary
registration procedures below.)
2.5 Important note Once received, the admission fee (deposit) cannot be refunded. Cancellation of registration after the
completion of initial registration procedures would be permitted only in the case the applicant goes
through the prescribed cancellation procedure by September 20, 2012. In that case, the initial
registration fee minus the admission fee (deposit) will be refunded to the applicant.
However, the applicants, for whom the university has applied (by proxy) for the Certificate of
Eligibility to a Status of Residence (college student) in Japan, will be refunded the initial registration
fee minus the admission fee (deposit) only in the case they go through the prescribed procedure

(submission of a statement of reason for cancellation of registration and return of the Certificate of
Eligibility and the Admission Certificate) by September 20, 2012. Details will be enclosed in the
Notification of Acceptance.
3. Secondary registration procedures
3.1 Arrival in Japan Please be aware that the successful applicant is required to arrive in Kyoto by the beginning of
September so you have enough time for your final registration and settling in.
3.2 Submission of documents The applicant is required to visit the Office of International Students and submit the documents listed
below.
Notification of Contact Person (prescribed form to he sent to successful applicants)
All students must have a contact person (regardless of nationality or place of residence) during their
enrollment period at Doshisha University. This contact person must be designated to maintain
communication with the university during the student’s absence, and responsible for delivering
messages/information from the university to the student.
Student ID Photo Sheet
The successful applicants are required to submit a photo as soon as possible after arriving in Japan
for their Student ID Card. (The photograph must be 3cm long × 2.4cm wide, glossy color with no
margin, full-face, upper body, no caps or hats.)
University Graduation Certificate(s) and Final Academic Transcript(s)
Only those who have applied with a Certificate of Expected Graduation must submit a University
Graduation Certificate(s) and final Academic Transcript(s).
Certificate of Alien Registration
You are required to register for your Certificate of Alien Registration as soon as you arrive in Japan.
The Office of International Students at Doshisha University requires that international students to
submit a document proving that they have made their application for a Certificate of Alien
Registration. Therefore, when you apply for your Certificate of Alien Registration at the local ward
office which covers the area you have settled in, you should also request this document. This
requirement may change due to the legal amendment and the most updated information will be sent
to the successful applicants with the Notification of Acceptance.

i. The academic year begins on September 21st and ends on September 20th of the following

ii. All international students enrolled at Doshisha University are required to obtain a valid visa
status as prescribed in the Immigration Control and Refuge Recognition Act Appendix 1.
International students should hold a College Student visa status in general and shall not be
allowed to enroll at Doshisha University with a Temporary Visitor visa status.
iii. The permission for the Certificate of Eligibility will be granted by the Ministry of Justice. If and
when such permission is not granted, the university will not take any responsibility and may
deny admission. In addition, students who have lost status of residence will be dismissed.
iv. Application documents not prescribed by Doshisha University may be accepted and screened at
a time other than the normal schedule when requested by the Japanese Government or
governmental offices of other countries involved. The same applies to foundations at home and
abroad, as well as overseas institutions that have academic exchange agreements with
Doshisha University. Again, it is the same if the applicant has been granted a scholarship by any
of the above mentioned organizations.
v. The enrollment other than September may be approved if it is requested by any of the
organizations described above and deemed necessary by the Graduate Schools. If necessary,
the special student may be permitted to enroll for a period other than the normal length of
enrollment, which is no less than six months and no more than one year with an extension for
enrollment for up to one year possible upon screening.
vi. Admission will be denied if there is any false information on the application form or the
submitted documents.
