SECTION 3.3Angles Formed by
Transversals
LEARNING TARGETS:1. Students will be able to
identify corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles, and same-side interior angles.
VOCABULARY1. Transversal2. Correspondin
g Angles3. Alternate
Interior Angles
4. Alternate Exterior Angles
5. Same-Side Interior Angles
Today is a big vocabulary day! It is important that you take good notes so
that when we introduce new Theorems about these vocabulary words they will make sense.
NOTE:
TRANSVERSAL: A line that intersects two or more coplanar lines
at different points. For instance, in the diagram below, the blue line t
is a transversal.
The angles formed by two lines and a transversal have special names.
Vocabulary
As stated before, angles formed by two lines and a transversal have special names.
We will use the diagram below to help us identify all of the different types of angle pairs.
Angle Pairs
CORRESPONDING ANGLES: Angles that occupy corresponding
(matching) positions.
Vocabulary
ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES: Angles that lie between (on the inside of)
the two lines and are on the opposite sides of the transversal.
Vocabulary
ALTERNATE EXTERIOR ANGLES: Angles that lie outside of the two lines
and are on the opposite sides of the transversal.
Vocabulary
SAME-SIDE INTERIOR ANGLES: Angles that lie between (on the inside of) the
two lines and are on the same side of the transversal.
