The Science of Chemistry

A. The Importance of Learning Chemistry

• Chemistry is important to everyone because chemistry occurs all around us in our daily lives.

• Chemistry “looks inside” ordinary objects to study how their components behave.

• Chemists develop new materials. • Chemistry can produce new sources of energy. • Chemistry can help to control diseases.

Chemistry Quiz1) If you turned each atom in a small glass of water into a

glass marble how much of the United States could you cover?

2) What property of gases helped the first humans to safely take flight?

3) What happens if you tickle Nitrogen Triiodide with a feather?

• Charles Law – Gases expand when heated – the lower density gives lift to a hot air balloon

• All of it – to the depth of 60km!!
