Something has been lost in the modern ghters quest for brilliance in every conceivable aspectof the martial arts. Boxing on Monday. Wrestling on Tuesday. Core Conditioning on Thursday.Martial art hobbyists around the world now have training opportunities formerly available only tothe pros (and they are taking advantage!). Undoubtedly this type of training breeds well-roundedand capable ghters. That is not in question. In fact, the average martial artist of today is head and
shoulders above his or her counterpart of decades past. That said, what if there was a single missingelement waiting to be (re)discovered that could separate even high level MMA ghters from theirpeers? Something so neglected I dare call it a secret. Prepare to have your striking tools transformedfrom adequate to elite. That secret is about to be exposed.
The primary purpose ofmartial art is applying
bodily force.- With respect to Bruce Lee & Edwin L. Haislet

u Assume a neutral stancewith feet shoulder widthapart, arms dangling at yoursides. You may prefer to takea comfortable ghting stanceinstead, feet staggered, with nomore than 18 inches distancebetween the lead and rear foot.
u Let the weight of your bodybegin to fall forward and liftyour lead foot o the groundjust enough to fall into a longlead step. Your foot shouldland at on the ground just intime to keep you from landingon your face
u On a hard surface youshould hear a loud slap whenyour lead foot makes contactwith the ground as the step hasall of your bodyweight and theadded momentum of the fallbehind it.
Sometimes referred to as the Drop Step, the Falling Step is the foundation of all punching
power. Famously described in Jack Dempseys Championship Fighting (1950), everyghter should already be familiar with the technique. I will discuss it here briey because itsmechanics relate to every other method of power generation within this writing.
Some may ask how the falling step can be used in a combative situation. Others will recognize itsapplication right away. Like any large movement, the falling step should be condensed (from longto short) when necessary. Once the mechanics of the step are second nature, begin to apply it as ashort, explosive movement to all of your straight punches. Vary the length of the step dependingon the distance required to reach the target and work up to applying the drop by stepping inplace, or even with no step at all!
From Falling Step to Short Step
Asumir una postura neutral

entre el pie y la parte trasera.
Deja que el peso de su cuerpo
comenzar a caer hacia adelante y levante

This technique involves a shift of weight from the ball of your lead foot to the heel of your rearfoot (and vice versa) in a quick, snapping motion. It will help facilitate the transfer of bodyweightfrom front to rear needed for powerful hooking punches (it also applies to straight punches as
you will see!)
u Assume a comfortableghting stance with feetshoulder width apart and nomore than 18 inches distancebetween the lead and rearfoot. Raise the heel of yourrear foot approximately 1 incho the ground so weight isresting on the ball of the foot.
A good ghting stance shouldalways have this as one of itsfeatures for maximum forwardexplosion.
u Snap your rear heel to theground while simultaneouslyraising the heel of your leadfoot approximately 1 inch othe ground.
u Without pausing, perform
the same movement in reverse
by snapping your lead heel back
to the ground while raising the
heel of your rear foot, returning
you to the starting position.

This type of movement will be very familiar to the Hsing-I practitioner. I originally learned thetechnique from Sifu Jeremy Lynch of the JKD Wednesday Night Group. It was later shown to me bySifu Tim Tacke (2nd Generation JKD Instructor and Hsing-I black belt) during a demonstration ofpower strikes from the Hsing-I system he learned in Taiwan in the early 1960s. Although Im surethe technique is well known by readers, Ive rarely seen it used (and in particular combined withthe Heel/Toe Sway) in the delivery of a hook punch. We will discuss the combination of the SuddenDrop, the Heel/Toe Sway, and upper body mechanics later.
u Assume a comfortableghting stance with feetshoulder width apart and nomore than 18 inches distancebetween the lead and rear foot.
u Drop into a half-squatposition by pulling your legsup toward your midsection. It should feel as if your feetalmost come o the ground fora split second.
u As quickly as possible, return to the on-guard position(to prepare for the follow upaack). You should not remainin the half-squat position forany longer than it would taketo execute a lead hook punch.
When applied to a punch, this movement is very subtle. You will not typically drop as far as ahalf-squat position (especially when striking a taller opponent), but rather condense the movementinto a short, quick drop. This helps speed up the transfer of bodyweight that takes place during theexecution of a hook punch.
atacar). Usted no debe seguir siendo

Upper Body Mechanics & Structure
Power starts from the ground (footwork and leg drive) and is transferred up to the shoulders viarotation of the hips. This is true for both hooks and straight punches. Here is a great medicine ball
drill that Sifu Jeremy Lynch uses to illustrate (and develop) proper hip torque in hooking punches:
u Assume a neutralstance with feetshoulder width apart.Hold a medicine ballwith both hands atchest height. Have a
partner hold a focusmi at head height fora right hook punch.Use a heavy bag if nopartner is available.
u Rotate your upperbody counterclockwisewhile keeping yourfeet in place. At fullrotation you shouldbe able to hand the
medicine ball to aperson standing toyour left.
u Return to thestarting position in onesmooth motion. Repeatthe counterclockwiserotation 3 times. Donot rotate farther than
what is comfortable.
u On the 4throtation, drop themedicine ball (mid-swing) and explodeinto the focus miwith a right hook. Your
upper body should feellike a stretched rubberband being released.
Repeat the process several times before working yourleft hook (clockwise rotation).
Jack Dempseys book Championship Fighting contains an excellent description of the Whirl, which is the whipping action of one shoulder forward and the other back. During one of myrst lessons in Jeet Kune Do I was given a slightly dierent explanation which I believe is worthrecounting. Imagine a chain connecting your left st to your right. Every time you execute a straightpunch and then retract it, the retraction causes your opposite st to be jerked forward violently into afollow up straight punch. This technique is especially useful for negative/positive strikes. Negativerefers to a light punch with no real intention of penetrating deep into the target. This allows recovery(and follow up) to happen much faster than with a commied punch and can confuse an opponentwhen the rhythm suddenly changes on the follow-up shot. Positive would be a deep, penetrating
shot and naturally slower. Think Jab-Cross with a O...N...E... TWO cadence (slow/fast).
Hip Torque & Core Rotation
Shoulder Rotation
A plena
rotacin que debe
ser capaz de entregar la
baln medicinal a un
persona legitimada para
su izquierda.
Vuelva a la
posicin de partida en uno
suavizar el movimiento. repetir
la izquierda
rotacin 3 veces. hacer
No gire ms all de
lo que es cmodo.
En el cuarto
rotacin, suelte el
baln medicinal (midswing)
y explotar
en el foco guante
con un gancho de derecha. su
parte superior del cuerpo debe
sentirse
tiro y naturalmente ms lento. Piense Jab-Cross con una O. .. N. .. E. .. DOS cadencia (lenta / rpida).

This may be the most dicult aspect to explain. Consider a boxers posture. (See Photo 1)Anatomically speaking it is considered very poor natural posture. The curved spine, shoulderssagging forward, elbows tucked in to cover the ribs. The critical aspect of the boxing stance or anyghting stance for that maer is what we call the Two-percent tuck. That is the inward tuck of themidsection to support all other elements of the boxing posture.
Where the discussion of posture gets interesting is when we add elements of Hsing-I heavyhiing. (See Photo 2) I have observed Sifu Tim Tacke teaching this (along with the SuddenDrop) to large groups of students who are initially hiing with relatively lile power. Withinminutes of learning these principles the entire group will be hiing twice as hard! The techniquewas taught to Sifu Tacke as the Downward Smash (aka Drilling) and involves sinkingfrom the sternum (See Photo 3) into the boxers posture and dropping all of your bodyweightonto your rear leg to deliver a brutal downward palm strike.

Tools & Delivery
We typically begin teaching this strike from the 3rd step of the progression due to it being the mostpractical. Also, the progression requires training time not usually available in a typical class or
seminar. Drill all 3 steps with a partner holding a focus mi out to the side of his/her body withthe elbow slightly bent andthe surface of the mi facingupward at a 45 degreeangle. The key is to makeimpact on the target with anoutward thrust of the palmheel. For the rst 2 steps,we will strike with the rearhand. In step 3 the leadhand will be used.
u Assume a comfortable ghting position and line up with the focus mi, one large step fromyour partner. Imagine that your hands are incredibly heavy and totally relaxed. Raise both handswell above your head and step through with your rear leg, changing leads. Drop all of your weightfrom your sternum and bring the heel of your palm down on the focus mi just as your foot landson the ground.
u Line up with the focus mi, one large step from your partner. Raise your striking hand to headheight while stepping through with your rear foot and bringing all of your bodyweight down onto
the focus mi using the same mechanics as described in step 1.
u Line up with the focusmi, arms length from yourpartner. Raise your strikinghand approximately 6 to 12inches above the target andwhile remaining stationary, strike with the heel of yourpalm using only sinkingbodyweight.
You now have thebody feel required toexecute a devastating
close range PalmHook.
hacia arriba a 45 grados
ngulo. La clave es hacer
impacto en el objetivo con un
empuje hacia el exterior de la palma
taln. Durante los primeros 2 pasos,
vamos a golpear con la parte trasera
mano.
pareja. Levante su sorprendente
parte aproximadamente de 6 a 12
pulgadas por encima de la meta y
mientras permanece estacionaria,
golpear con el taln de su
palma de la mano utilizando slo
hundimiento
de peso corporal.

This is an incredibly powerful close range tool that can be used from many dierent positions.Maximum damage is inicted by driving the full mass of your body into the hook. Ideally, thisstrike should penetrate approximately 4 inches into the target with an outward thrust of the palm
heel. Drill this technique by having a partner hold a focus mi at head height.
u Assume a comfortableghting position and lineup with the focus mi. Toachieve proper distance for the
strike, your forehead shouldbe approximately 6 8 inchesfrom the edge of the focus mi.Align your striking hand withthe target, 6 inches away. Youshould need no more than 6inches to generate knockoutpower.
u Apply the body mechanicsyou have learned in thefollowing order:
Heel/Toe Swayg SuddenDropg Hip Torqueg Shoulder RotationgOutward thrust of thepalm heelgImpact!
The Heel/Toe Sway initiates the fast transfer of weight. The Sudden Drop should start just beforeyour rear heel touches the ground. Hip Torque is activated next, driving the Shoulder Rotation.Hand movement begins immediately after the rotation of the shoulders. It should feel as if yourstriking hand is being dragged slightly behind your body similar to a powerful round kick. Justbefore impact on the target, the palm heel is snapped outward creating a hydrostatic shock eect.
There should be no perceptible time delay between any of the actions described above. Everythingshould be executed in one smooth motion.
u Recovery is an importantfactor in the successfulexecution of the Palm Hook. The 2nd half of the Heel/Toe
sway movement (shiftingbodyweight back from rearheel to a balanced on-guardposition with the rear heelraised) will initiate recovery.Quick counter-rotation of thehips and shoulders will do therest.

Variations of the Palm Hook
Maintaining weight on the leadleg and driving the toes of thelead foot into the ground.
Stepping to 7 oclock with therear foot when hooking.
Striking with a corkscrewmotion of the hand and armso impact is made while theforearm is horizontal with theelbow raised.
Te Palm Hook described here is a hybrid of what we call the snappy and heavy hooks. Some variations include:
ConclusionIf power is the ability to use strength quickly, then its only logical to believe that in order to punchhard, you must possess a lot of muscular strength and speed. Logical as it may seem, its not entirelytrue. When it comes to punching, we can overcome the limitations of our physical strength/speed bytaking advantage of two things available to us all: Bodyweight & Gravity.

de la
llevar el pie en el suelo.
Stepping a 7:00 con lapie trasero al enganche.

codo levantado.
