In St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians (10:31) he tells us: “So whether
you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” The key word in this verse is everything.
Some give glory to God at Mass, during prayer time, meditation and other liturgical celebrations. Paul’s words go beyond these actions. Paul is saying that giving glory to God includes all of these actions, and much more.
Brother Lawrence was a cook in a French monastery in the 1800’s. He wrote a book, “Practicing the Presence of God.” He was able to practice the presence of God in his daily life and thus give glory to God. How did he do it? He took the simplest daily responsibilities (like cooking meals, doing dishes, reading books, shopping, cleaning, taking out the trash, etc.) and did them all for the glory of God.
Brother Lawrence said the key to doing everything for the glory of God was to become a close friend with Christ. So what he did was talk to Jesus often during the day with short prayers. He talked to Jesus as you and I would talk to a close friend… and he did so with prayers he could say in one breath. Prayers like: “Good morning, Lord.” “How are you?” “It’s a beautiful day.” “Guide me.” “Be with me.” “I love you.” “You are my Lord and my God.”
Do you want to become a closer friend with Christ? Then talk to him frequently everyday as a close friend.
The key to becoming a closer friend with Christ and doing everything for his honor and glory is not to change the good things we do daily, but rather to change our attitude toward every-thing we do. This means that what you and I normally do for ourselves and others during the day like eating, shopping, studying, shoveling snow, going to the post office, etc., we do for Christ and for God’s glory.
One other important thing that happens when we do everything for God’s glory is that it gives our life direction. By that I mean that if what we are about to do will God glory then do it. If what we are about to do will not give God glory, it will dishonor God, then don’t do it. When we do everything for the glory of God, it eliminates evil and brings goodness and happiness into our life.
Make the decision today to develop this fantastic spiritual practice of friendship with Christ and you will give glory to God in everything you do. When you do this, an abundance of glory will come into your life. You will experience miracles in your life through the glory of God! Know what real happiness is by giving glory to God in everything you do.
“Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy.” Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy.” Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy.” Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy.” (Psalm 34)
