In this research I have analysed the horror genre and the different statistics that contemplate certain films within the genre category. The research shows current and up to date statistics to ensure that I have carried out and obtained the best possible research in order to make the film opening desriable but also to esnure I would have the right release dates for the film. The above data shows film rankings from the total number of days they have been in the cinema. Despite only having been in the cinema for 17 days – just over half the time of the top ranking film, it is in second place with the second highest gross profit amount. However in relation to this within the total top ten films sown over the last month (roughly) there are 3 horror films, showing that they are gaining in popularity. Although this may be due to current events such as Halloween in late October, therefore signifying that there may have been an increase in sales towards the end of the month. This data focuses solely on the genre of horror and the top ten grossing films within this genre in 2014. There is a significant difference between the number 8 and 7 spot (in terms of total gross) and from then on the figures climb even-more greatly. This supports the fact that there is still a market out there for the horror film

This supports the fact that there is still a market out there for the horror film genre and so the chosen genre in which I aim to do will not be a risky move. Horror films are released throughout the year though more come out around the time of Halloween as it is considered a seasonal holiday and so typically speaking more people would be willing to watch a horror film of some kind. However I find that releasing the film at a different time such as around Christmas may be considered a bold move and ensure that the film is different compared to others released.

The statistic shows the domestic box office revenue of Hollywood movies in 2014, broken down by film genre. In the measured period action movies, led by the Guardians of the Galaxy, generated the largest revenue, while horror movies brought 330 million U.S. dollars in box office results. Though despite horror films not being among the most popular film choice and therefore making it into the niche market, it is clear that within this niche market they are popular.

The statistic shows the domestic box office revenue of Hollywood movies in 2014, broken down by rating. In the measured period PG-13 rated movies generated the largest revenue, while G-rated movies brought 158 million U.S. dollars in box office results. This suggests that the older age rating films are more popular among cinema-goers and so because of this I am not necessarily restricted to the content in which is in my film (within reason).

This data shows (top) horror films released in 2015 (as of November 9th). It shows that there is a large profitable market for horror films as they fall under their own category and have the select side of the market and the market leaders are a mix of psychological and supernatural. This connotes that my choice of a psychological horror is somewhat a safe idea and due to the enigmatic suspense I intend to include the film would be popular among the target audience. The top films are PG of PG-13 suggesting the content is mainly intended or a mature audience and there is a much higher number of tickets sold for the top three compared to that of films below them in the rankings.

This data shows horror sub-genres with known films in the category and then the name of the top grossing film alongside the amount in USD. Though comedy horror and supernatural horror contain the most films and there is a scarcity of films in other horror film sub-genres, I am trying to revitalise the sub-genre of psychological as these horrors – personally speaking, are among the most interactive as they get the audience thinking about problems the characters may face and the films are designed to somewhat mess with the minds of those viewing the film. This strategy ensures that the film has a lasting impression on the audience.

In conclusion to my research findings I think that the genre of horror will be interesting to do and I want to bring something new into the world of the horror genre to make my film stand out. The statistics show there is most definitely a market out there for the genre though it is not the biggest. The niche market however ensure that I only have to cater for a select amount of people whereas in contrast to this a big blockbuster action film would have to appeal to many within that target audience as it has a far greater market share. Filming a horror therefore ensures I am not limited to what I can include as the genre spans many sub-genres and new ideas are very welcomed in the genre and so with this I can almost revitalised the psychological side of horror films.
