Ukulele Workbook
#2
Name:_____________________________
In Book #1, you learned… • C, G, Am, F, Dm, Em, and E7 chords • How to find the root of a chord • How to label chords in the key of C • Different ways of navigating a chord chart • How to identify a blues progressiom and a I-V-vi-IV
progression
In Book #2, you will learn…
• D, A, and Bm chords
• How to “scratch” strum • How to label chords in the keys of G, D, and A • How to change keys • How to play a blues progression in G, D, and A • How to play a I-V-vi-IV progression in D and G • How to identify different sections of a song • How major scales are related to each other
There will also be more opportunities to team up with recorders!
This is the D major chord. Place your first, second, and third fingers on the second fret
as shown in the diagram. This chord is a little awkward to make at first, but your
hands will quickly get used to it with practice. It may seem easier to use your thumb over the ukulele neck, but don’t! It’s a bad habit that will make changing chords harder in the
future.
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together Performed by Taylor Swift
With the “scratch” technique-
Centuries Performed by Fall Out Boy
Finding our next scale with the 5th!
Now, find our chords in the Key of “G”
Now, practice labeling chords and switching keys!
• Find a partner. One of you plays the notes on the staff with a recorder, and one of
you plays the ukulele chords written above (4 strums each per note). Then switch. Remember the F#’s!
• CHALLENGE! Where there are two notes in a measure, try playing the top one.
Blues In G
We Are Going To Be Friends Performed by The White Stripes
Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) Performed by Green Day
Play 2 strums per bar, or try per bar!
Fight Song Performed by Rachel Platten
Fight Song, Pt.2
This is the A major chord. To play it, place your middle finger on the red sticker and your first finger as shown in the diagram above. The way you place your fingers is
very similar to the F chord, but don’t confuse the two! They sound very different.
I’m Shipping Off To Boston Performed by The Dropkick Murphy’s
Animal Performed by Pearl Jam
Play this rhythm for every bar (unless otherwise notated)-
…Or for a challenge-
Song Form-
Finding our next scale with the 5th ….again!
Now, find our chords in the Key of “D”
Blues In D
How Blue Can You Get? Performed by B.B. King
Use this rhythm per bar: Or try this for a challenge:
This song is in the key of D
Finding our next scale with the 5th ….yet again!
Now, find our chords in the Key of “A”
Blues In A
What chord can we use when we don’t know the V? _____
Rock N’ Roll Performed by Led Zeppelin
(play song with per beat, using strumming)
Song Form
This is the B minor chord (written as Bm). This is the first “bar chord” we’ve
encountered- it’s called this because you use your first finger to press down all the
strings on a certain fret, like a bar. For this chord, “bar” the second fret with your first
finger and place your third finger as shown in the diagram.
Can’t Hold Us Performed by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
(play until 2nd Chorus, wait through the horn/”na-na-na” part, and then start again!)
Radioactive
Performed by Imagine Dragons
Come Together Performed by The Beatles
Song Form-
Now that we know how to play Bm, let’s re-visit switching keys from C to D…
First, find our chords in the keys of C and D (again)
Now label this chord progression again and switch keys-
• Match your chords in D with the recorder
notes (like we’ve done before with the keys of C and G).
• Find a partner. One of you plays the notes on the staff with a recorder, and one of you plays the ukulele chords written above (4 strums each per note). Then switch. Remember the F#’s and C#’s!
Now that we’ve had some practice with that, let’s look back at a song we did earlier that changes keys midway through…….
My Girl (Revisited)
Performed by The Temptations
Wait four measures before coming in…..
