2nd Sunday of Easter/ Divine Mercy - His Mercy Endures Acts 2:42-47 Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24 1 Peter 1:3-9 John 20:19-31 We are children of Jesus' Resurrection from the dead. Through this wondrous sign of His great mercy, the Father of Jesus has given us new birth, as we hear in today's Epistle. Today's First Reading sketches the "family life" of our first ancestors in the household of God (see 1 Peter 4:17). We see them doing what we still do - devoting themselves to the Apostles' teaching, meeting daily to pray and celebrate "the breaking of the bread." The Apostles saw the Lord. He stood in their midst, showed them His hands and sides. They heard His blessing and received His commission - to extend the Father's mercy to all peoples through the power and Spirit He conferred upon them. We must walk by faith and not by sight, must believe and love what we have not seen (see 2 Corinthians 5:7). Yet the invisible realities are made present for us through the devotions the Apostles handed on. Notice the experience of the risen Lord in today's Gospel is described in a way that evokes the Mass. Both appearances take place on a Sunday. The Lord comes to be with His disciples. They rejoice, listen to His Word, receive the gift of His forgiveness and peace. He offers His wounded body to them in remembrance of His Passion. And they know and wor-ship Him as their Lord and their God. Thomas' confession is a vow of faith in the new covenant. As promised long before, in the blood of Jesus we can now know the Lord as our God and be known as His people (see Hosea 2:20-25). This confession is sung in the heavenly liturgy (see Revelation 4:11). And in every Mass on earth we renew our covenant and receive the blessings Jesus promised for those who have not seen but have believed. In the Mass, God's mercy endures forever, as we sing in today's Psalm. This is the day the Lord has made - when the victory of Easter is again made wonderful in our eyes.

Certain moments in life are “oh, no” moments. We sud-denly realize that what we thought was absolutely true turns out not to be. Facts and new information forces us to re-think our position and we have to admit to ourselves and to others that we were wrong. Our certainty gives way to truth and we realize our mistake; hence, the ‘oh, no.’
Thomas has an “oh, no” moment. He and the Apostles had been with Jesus throughout His ministry. They were the first witnesses to His work, His words, and His miracles. Yet they were at first very skeptical about His resurrection. When he appeared, Thomas was absent and the others tried to convince him that they had seen Jesus. He doubted their testimony. So when Jesus appears to Thomas, he has an ‘oh, no’ mo-ment. He not only dismisses his doubts, but he also professes his faith. In the community of the Church, we experience the Risen Lord. In word and sacrament, in prayer and ser-vice, we find the assurance of the Lord. Together we join Him in working towards the goal of our faith: eternal life.
The Feast Day of Saint Mark - April 25, 2020
This year, we separately, yet collectively join together in Prayer, Song and Thanksgiving as we praise God for the gift of Saint Mark Parish and Community.
The Story and History of Saint Mark Pentapolis, North Africa, is believed to be where Saint Mark the Evangelist was born. His family moved to Jerusalem where Mark was well educated. His mother became one of the earliest converts to Christianity whilst living in Jerusalem. The disciples of Jesus were welcomed into her house and this is where Mark met Peter, Paul and Barnabas.
Mark did not witness all of the events surrounding the life of Jesus but he documented details of his life in the Gospel of Mark, as told to him by Saint Peter. Mark is, however, believed to be one of the servants at the Marriage at Cana who poured out the water that Jesus turned to wine. After the death of Jesus Mark travelled with Peter to Rome and then, following the death of Peter, travelled with Paul and his cousin Barnabas to Cypress on their evangelist missions. Saint Mark the Evangelist died in 68AD of natural causes.
O Glorious St. Mark through the grace
of God, our Father, you became a great Evangelist,
preaching the Good News of Christ.
May you help us to know Him well so that we may faithfully live our lives as followers of
Christ. Amen.
