SCRIPTURE READINGS

For December 10th-16th

March for Life, Washington , D.C.

St. Peter CYO would like to thank all who attended the “Evening for Life” or donated to support those attending the March for Life In Washington, D.C. It is important that St. Peter continue to send youth to represent the Parish in an effort to protect all life from conception to natural death. We have been able to provide approximately $125 per attendee thus far, through fundraising. The trip is expensive, $595, and many of our youth work or fundraise on their own to make the trip. If you would like to sponsor a child or donate to offset some of the cost, we would be most grateful. Checks can be made out to St. Peter Church, and brought to the rectory or mailed to St. Peter Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433. Please indicate the donation is for the March for Life trip. For further information, call the St. Peter CYO office: 985.892.8994. Thank you.

BAPTISMAL PREPARATION St. Peter Baptismal Preparation for infants consists of one mandatory session that par-ents and godparents are required to attend. Parents are encouraged to call the rec-tory, 985.892.2422, three months before the expected birth date to register for class.

The next seminar is Wednesday, January 2nd from 6:00—7:15 p.m. in the Upper Room, 318 S. Jefferson Ave. The Rite of Baptism will be scheduled after the class has been attended and all documents are submitted.

The Parish Communal Anointing of the Sick will take place on Saturday, December 15th at the

4:00 PM Mass. Who may avail of the Sacrament of the

Anointing of the Sick? According to the Church’s Rite of Anointing and Pastoral Care of the Sick, the following are among those who should be anointed: Those whose health is seriously impaired due to

sickness or old age Those who are to undergo surgery Elderly weakened by age, even if no serious

illness is present Sick children who are sufficiently mature to be

comforted by the sacrament How often may someone receive the Sacrament of

the Anointing of the Sick? Please note the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

may be repeated: When the sick person recovers after being anointed and, at a later time, becomes sick again When during the same illness the condition of the sick person becomes more serious

Liturgy of the Word for Children Offered for 3 - 6 year old children

During the 9:30 a.m. Mass

The Children’s Liturgy provides children with a time and place to “soak in” the Gospel message on a level they can understand. Children will be led to St. Mary’s Hall for catechesis after the Opening Greeting and will return to Church immediately following the Prayers of the Faithful. No registration is required.

 Remaining Dates for 2018: December 2nd, 9th

Frequently Asked Questions??? RCIA Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming

1. What is the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens? The Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens is for inquirers in the RCIA proc-ess who are preparing for baptism and are ready to publicly declare their intention to con-tinue their journey toward becoming Catholic.

2. What is the Rite of Welcome? The Rite of Welcome is for inquirers who have been previously baptized in a Christian tradition and are ready to publicly declare their intention to continue their journey toward becoming Catholic.

3. What is the community’s role at this rite and when will the rite be celebrated? The parish community affirms that they are ready to help and support our RCIA/RCIC catechumens and candidates follow Christ. The Rite of Acceptance and Welcome will be celebrated at St. Peter Parish on Sunday, December 16th at the 11:30 AM Mass.

4. When are the Bibles we have donated given? At the Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming, the bibles are given to our catechumens and candidates. Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, bibles are given to each adult and child in our RCIA/RCIC process as a gift from our parish community. Bibles donated for our Catholics in the process will be given to them at a special time during our weekly gathering.

HISTORY OF THE EARLY CHURCH’S CATECHUMENATE (RCIA)

DID YOU KNOW???

The Sign of the Cross was included in the early Church’s Rite of Acceptance in the fourth cen-tury. It was made on the forehead. From St. Augustine’s Sermon 215.5: “Do not hesitate, do not be ashamed. When you first believed, you received the sign of Christ on your forehead, the

home of shame. Remember your forehead and do not be afraid of another man's tongue...Do not then be afraid of the shame of the Cross." The forehead was believed to be the home of shame because it is there that blush reveals shame. The Sign of the Cross on the Catechumen’s forehead should teach him never to be ashamed of the cross. The Sign of the Cross had another symbolism, probably more ancient than that of the fourth century. Servants and sol-diers bore a mark on the hand or the forehead to show to whom they owed service. The Christian was signed with the Cross to show that he/she belonged to Christ.

FAITH FACT—Fasting for Advent

“[S]ince salvation of our souls is brought about not only by fasting, let us add works of mercy for the poor to our fasting…so that whoever from his just labors offers a sacrifice of piety to God, the author of all goods, he may merit to receive from them the reward of the heavenly kingdom.” ~Pope Leo the Great

As we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent, this week’s Faith Fact contrasts today’s consumerist Christmas season with the practice of fasting for Advent, which was encouraged by Pope Leo the Great during the fifth century. Copies are available in the back of church and on our parish and school websites.

Stewardship

Second Sunday of Advent- December 9th:

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord,” and this is what Advent is all about. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas.

WILL YOU PRAY A ROSARY FOR OUR BELOVED PRIESTS

IN 2019?

Christ continues to love us and be pre-sent for us through the hands of His holy priests! Fr. Otis and Fr. Colm have

offered their lives to God as a sacrifice for us, His people. They depend on our prayerful support to live faithfully their vocation in the midst of many challenges.

Please consider offering a Rosary for FR. OTIS AND FR. COLM

as a gift in appreciation for their priestly ministry.

In the back of church there is a calendar to sign your name on the date you have chosen to pray for them. There are reminder slips for your convenience. On that day pray the rosary for Fr. Otis and Fr. Colm ask-ing God for special graces for them to persevere in their priestly vocations. Thank you!

“The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.” ~St. John Marie Vianney
