The Altar Society needs Volunteers

There is a saying that it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a village to feed the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ every week to hundreds of people. The Altar Society is looking for ladies to help launder the church’s small sacred linens. Here are some facts about this volunteer work.• Your help is needed only 6 times a year, or once

every 8 weeks.• The amount of laundry is small, is done in your

home, and at your convenience.• The largest piece of linen we launder is only

11x17 inches. • We will make every effort to accommodate your

schedule. If you are interested in helping or learning more, please contact April Marano, 310-939-9078 or a p r i l m a r a n o @ v e r i z o n . n e t

stephen ministry Stuck in the ColdWhile we count our blessings for our beautiful home by the beach and the weather it provides, we realize there are many across the country who are stuck in the cold. They can easily be stranded, depressed, isolated from the world. Unfortunately, these situations aren’t solely linked to people stuck in the cold. Members of our parish suffer from these same feelings due to a job loss or family illness or other life challenges. Fortunately, they don’t have to be faced alone.Stephen Ministers are trained to provide confidential Christian care to those who need it. If you would like to speak with a Stephen Minister, call 310-545-8244 for information.

For more information, contact Steve Perry, 818-800-5653.POPE FRANCIS' YES TO LIFE...

“Pope Francis preached on the worldwide Day of the Gospel of Life last June 16. He said, ‘the Scriptures everywhere tell us that God is the Living One, the one who bestows life and points the way to fullness of life. The commandments are not a litany of prohibitions – you must not do this, you must not do that; on the contrary, they are a great ‘Yes!': a yes to God, to Love, to life.’ That is what the Pope means in his interview by putting the abortion teaching in context. This actually protects and strengthens the Church's teaching on abortion

– and other moral issues – it bases these stances on fundamental affirmations of the Faith, and on the very nature of God. If a person rejects the Church's position against abortion, they are not rejecting merely a political stance or opinion; they are rejecting the Faith itself. The Pope, in fact, says that failing to respect life is the same as idolatry. ‘All too often, people do not choose life, they do not accept the 'Gospel of Life,' but let themselves be led by ideologies and ways of thinking that do not respect life, because they are dictated by selfishness, profit, power and pleasure, and not by love. As a result, the Living God is replaced by fleeting human idols.’ For Pope Francis, it is all about integrating the Church's teaching and practice of faith and morals, and it all centers on connecting with the human person as we connect with Christ”.

St. Francis, Pope Francis and a Vision for the 21st Century Parish

Jack Jezreel Thursday, February 20, 7:00 - 8:30pM

Jack Jezreel returns to American Martyrs to present a talk on the influence of St. Francis

and Pope Francis on today's church. He will invite us to consider a vision of what

that influence will have on our everyday life in our parish. Included in his invitation is for us to

consider how this influence will affect our living in community, discipleship, our ability to evangelize

and to deliver the good news of the Gospel. Everybody is invited.

A good will donation is welcome. Fellowship afterwards in the Parish House.

When we pray, we join a steady stream of prayer that began more than 2,000 years ago. With our world around us constantly

in a state of flux, there is a special grace in knowing there is a place that is sacred and unchanging, a place where we can go

to be renewed in the love that is ours by way of God’s grace. We all have gifts differing. There are many pathways to prayer.

“Let us imagine that within us is an extremely rich palace, built entirely of gold and precious stones,

built for a Lord such as ours. Imagine also that in this palace dwells this mighty King.”

The Interior Castle, St. Teresa of Avila

What do we do? Very simply, we begin with a brief reading from one of the Saints or mystics of the Church, followed by two 20-minute periods of silent prayer, closing at 8:30pM with “Our Father.” For these weeks prior to Lent, our readings are from the interior caStle by St. Teresa of Avila. St. Teresa reminds us “This Lord of ours is a very good neighbor and wants us to draw closer, and asks that we seek his company. You have done quite a bit just by entering into the castle.”

It is essential that children feel protected, safe and secure in the aftermath of a trauma. Ensure that all basic needs are met, including love, care, and physical closeness. FAmilies in FAith What do we learn in our religion classes? Students in AMS and SRE follow a path to learned (memorized) prayer that this month includes the Act of Contrition for the second graders as they prepare for their First Penance on February 12 and 13. We all could benefit from a look at this Sacrament – start with a daily examen and Act of Contrition before bed and soon this will be a wonderful family tradition!

Hello Ramblers

Who's proud of their parish, and wants to show it off to the ND community?

We're looking for a parish to host our 1st Travelling Mass of 2014. We can't hit all 12 months if we miss January.

Though the Travelling Mass has been a huge hit, it's very easy to do. All we need is a parishioner of a Catholic Church to coordinate with their local parish to:

.... pick a certain Mass date/time,

... allocate a few rows of seats for Domers,

... ask the presiding Priest to acknowledge the group,

and, if possible, coordinate a small meet and greet afterwards.

Please contact r j m f i n a n c i a l @ g m a i l . c o m if you're interested in coordinating with your parish.
