Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
ext week is Septuagesima. We have been blessed with quite some time of rest after Christmas this year, however the quest for holiness goes on, and we need
to keep this flesh disciplined. The Church is calling us once again to penance! Many of us who go to the Extraordinary Form strive for an observance that is not the minimum. Instead of asking ourselves if something is a mortal sin before we decide, (like meat on Friday or an hour eucharistic fast) we push ourselves into the domain of the voluntary and do a little more to unite our hearts to the liturgy. This is one of those times. So you can very well continue on your Christmas spirit for a few more weeks until Ash Wednesday. Or you can think of a little something now that will begin your penitential time with Septuagesima. If so, your own life will reflect the tone of penance that the Liturgy will have.

nfortunately we need to postpone the Rib Contest. The weather forecast goes back and forth with the predictions of rain for next weekend, and it is better to cancel it ahead of
time rather than wait until after everyone has bought food for it. The Parish Council had decided it will be better to have the Rib Contest when the seminarians are with us in the summer. More on this later. So to be clear, the Rib Contest will not be next weekend.

La paciencia divina espera la conversión de los pecadores. n aquel tiempo: Dijo Jesús a las turbas esta parábola: Es semejante el reino de los cielos a un hombre que sembró buena simiente en su campo. Y mientras dormían los hombres,
vino cierto enemigo suyo y sembró cizaña en medio del trigo Y llegándose los criados del padre, le dijeron: Señor, ¿no sembraste buena simiente en tu campo? Pues ¿Cómo tiene cizaña? Contestóles: Algún enemigo mío ha hecho esto. Replicaron los criados. Replicaron los criados: ¿Quieres que vayamos a recogerla? No, les respondió, no sea que al arrancar la cizaña, arranquéis con ella el trigo, Dejad crecer uno y otra hasta la siega; que al tiempo de siega diré a los segadores: Coged primero la cizaña y atadla en manojos para quemarla; mas el trigo guardadlo en mi granero.

l demonio, autor del mal, siembra por la noche en el campo del padre de familia la cizaña, que nacerá con el trigo. A su tiempo se hará la necesaria separación. Si la cizaña crece, se la arrojará al
fuego; pero hay que aguardar a la siega. Tal es la disposición providencial de Dios: la separación de malos y buenos está reservada para el fin de los tiempos. El juicio pertenece a Dios y Dios puede aguardar. Puede ret rasar siglos el día de la cuenta, que no faltará. Por lo que a nosotros concierne, seamos bondadosos, dulces y pacientes con todos los hombres, cualesquiera que sean. Este deber es tanto mayor cuanto que, admitidos a la paz de Cristo, nos hemos beneficiado de su misericordia. San Pablo nos lo recuerda como un motivo de alegría, pero también como una exigencia de caridad impuesta al cristiano. Esta caridad paciente no implica, en verdad, ninguna especie de presunción o de abandono; más bien es el resultado de una voluntad perseverante en el bien. En seres débiles que tienen constante necesidad de perdón y de ayuda divina, ello no es orgullo ni presunción; sino humilde conciencia del deber de amar y perdonar, como Dios les perdona y ama. ... El cristiano instruido en escuela del Hombre-Dios que se dignó habitar con nosotros, debe ejercer la misericordia en favor de sus hermanos. De este modo, cumpliendo las saludables enseñanzas que nos da el Apóstol en la Epístola que leemos en la santa Misa, el mundo, purificado por la presencia del Verbo encarnado, será para nosotros asilo de paz. Esta paz debe llenar completamente el corazón de cada cristiano, debe manifestarse en un no interrumpido gozo que le proporcionará ciertamente la meditación de la palabra divina, y el canto de los salmos y alabanzas tributadas a su Creador. Si siempre debe cumplir este deber de alabar a Dios, el día más propio para esto es el domingo, uniéndose a la Iglesia en la celebración de los oficios divinos. Tengamos también presente en nuestras cotidianas acciones, el Consejo que nos da el Apóstol en esta misma Epístola, es decir, que lo hagamos todo en nombre de Jesucristo. Es el medio más fácil para agradar al Padre Celestial. El reino de los cielos de que nos habla el Salvador en el Evangelio, es su Iglesia militante. En ella su heredad, su reino. No debe escandalizarnos de que en esta heredad, en este reino instituido con tanta solicitud por él mismo Salvador hayan aparecido las malas hierbas de diversas suertes de pecados, ni la cizaña de las herejías. Dios permite que haya buenos y malos, ya para ejercicio de éstos, ya para qué, viendo las perversas acciones, no confíen en sí mismos; sino en el auxilio del cielo. Día vendrá en que el Señor dará a cada uno el premio o castigo, según sus obras, en que separará el trigo de la cizaña para asentar a los buenos en los tronos de su reino, y a arrojar la cizaña al fuego inextinguible del infierno
