BUCKHORN WORKDAY
The weather was great and thanks to the 18 folks who volunteered their time to help beautify the Buckhorn’s Rankin Cottage of Hope on Saturday, April 29! There is a spring fair at the main Buckhorn campus on Saturday June 3. We would love for any and all to attend. We have been asked to provide cakes for the cakewalk. Also, a capital campaign is underway to provide much needed improvements to the homes and get all kids on two campuses. Donations are always welcome! Contact Nellie Wilkinson for details (338-9604 or [email protected]).
And they said, "Let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
Nehemiah 2:18
Although we (BUILD) did not reach our collective people-power of 2,000 at April's Nehemiah Action, 1,777 present (90 from Second) did proclaim God's reign of love and justice for our beloved community. We won "YES" commitments to both Mental Health 'asks': for Bluegrass to expand the capacity of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team to serve 100 people and for the city to continue funding Mental Health Court. These two diversion programs provide treatment for people with severe mental illness; saving lives and saving money. Mayor Gray and no representative from his office were present at the Action to respond to the ongoing violent crime problem in our city. Since he publicly reached out to the faith community to take action after Trinity Gay was killed, 34 BUILD leaders took the Action to him at the city council meeting May 11th. Aware that he was also challenged these past weeks by the hundreds of phone calls and letters asking him to support a different kind of policing strategy that would improve police-community relationships and reduce violent crime, and reduce violent crime, he appointed Ronnie Bastin, Commissioner of Public Safety and a veteran police officer to attend the National Network for Safe Communities national conference June 15-16 in NYC.
To ALL Justice Ministry Network Members: Our Celebration and Investment Drive Kick-off is Monday, June 12 at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary (dinner 6:15; program; 7:00). We will celebrate our victories and recognize each one of us. This is our chance to tell God's story of justice happening in our city. Updated reports on BUILD's current issues and the work the steering committees will continue over the summer will be told. We will have the opportunity to commit to invest at least $200.00 so that we can own our justice ministries; to sustain our independence. Our congregational investment drive concludes July 31st. If you have any concerns, questions or need a ride June 12th, please contact your Justice Ministry Team: Fredda & Bill Moody, Catherine Hunt, Jim Drahovzal or Judy Maxson.
BACKPACK BUDDIES 2016-2017 Another successful year of our partnership with God's Pantry and Cardinal Valley Elementary has come to a close! For your participation in this vital ministry of providing
bagged, shelf ready food products for 100 children per week during the school year, thank you to the following: The Men's Breakfast group coordinated by Jim Drahovzal; Sara Benedetti & the Youth Group; Family Mission Night group; Valerie Caudill & family; Valerie Caudill & her book club; Colette Crown & family; Rebecca Wilkinson & family; Susan Abner & family; Evelyn & Stan Kramer
We will again be partnering with Cardinal Valley Elementary for the 2017-2018 school year; contact Evelyn Kramer ([email protected]) if you'd like advance notification of packing dates or information on the Backpack Buddies program.
John 21:16 Jesus said "Take care of my Sheep."
One of the safety services Lexington offers to those who live alone-and don't have someone who checks on you regularly-is Carrier Alert. Residents of this county can register with the USPS and your carrier will place a Carrier Alert symbol on your mailbox. The carrier will watch for unusual accumulation of mail and report it to postal officials, who notify Department of Social Services. They will reach out to you by call first and then by a visit to check on your health and well being. This is an option for safety and staying connected with others who can provide care during an emergency.
