It is an honor and privilege to be here in Lexington as your Interim Pastor. Second Presbyterian Church has a long and rich history of over 200 years of mission and ministry in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ not only here in Lexington, but far beyond. I recently served as the Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Tupelo, MS for the past 11 years. My wife, Leslie and I, loved our time there, made some wonderful friends, and will miss them and the community very much. However, it was time for new leadership there and so I am here now among you. I am looking forward to getting to know you, to learn your names and faces, and to do ministry among you. Please be patient with me as I have over 700 new names to learn.
My role, as Interim Pastor, is to continue those things that have gone well for you in the past. To keep the ship sailing in the right direction, so to speak. If there are things that need to be “tweaked” then we will look at those issues, make changes or eliminate it altogether.
The staff at Second Presbyterian is a wonderful, committed, hardworking one. They know their responsibilities very well and they want to do what is best for the church, and I am not going to get in the way of their success. If I need to step in and makes suggestions, I will do that. Teddy Roosevelt was quoted as saying, “The best executive is one who has sense enough to pick good people to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.”
My door is always open, so please stop by and say hello and chat awhile. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Interim Pastor.
See you in church and bring a friend,
Tom

Our 2017 Vacation Bible School was a success! Over 25 children participated in a fun
filled week. This year we journeyed back in time to Rome to meet Paul and the
Christians of the early church! Children and volunteers were able to experience the
food, clothing, activities and marketplace just like families living during Bible times.
On behalf of children's ministry, we would like to extend our heart filled gratitude and
appreciation to all the volunteers who helped make this VBS one of the best! Special thanks
to Jen Brown for her leadership and guidance!

JUSTICE MINISTRY NEWS FOR THE HEALTH OF IT
The children of Buckhorn hosted a Family Festival
held at the Dessie Scott Campus on Saturday,
June 3. Thanks to all of you who made cakes for
the ‘cake walk’. It was a big success and fun was
had by all!
Your kindness to these children is greatly
appreciated!
Blessed are they who maintain justice, who constantly do what is right. Psalm 106:3
On June 12th, 289 Justice Ministry Network Members representing 26 BUILD (Building a United Interfaith Lex. through Direct-action) congregations, 16 from Second Church, celebrated at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary our story of living out God's call to do justice and telling our story of victory; Bluegrass will expand the capacity of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team to serve 100 people and our city will continue funding Mental Health Court (MHC). These two diversion programs provide treatment for people with severe mental illness; saving lives and saving money. At the April's Nehemiah Action and BUILD's follow-up meeting, the Homelessness Prevention & Intervention Board convinced the board NOT to defund MHC. Ensuring continued funding for the Fayette Co Mental Health Court will once again save the system $931,156 this year! The Crime and Drug Steering Committee will be following up with Mayor Gray to hear what Commissioner of Public Safety, Ronnie Bastin and Commander Mike Wright learned at the National Network for Safe Communities National Conference in NYC two weeks ago. What evidenced- based tools to improve relationships between law enforcement and our citizens and 'new' police strategies to reduce Lexington's ongoing violent crime problem did they discover?
Second Church was recognized for exceeding our investment goal again this past year. With a few pledges still pending, we are confident that we will attain our $11,000 goal by July 31st. It was exciting to learn that these BUILD justice campaigns won over the past few years (Affordable Housing Fund, Restorative Justice for Youth, Drug Court filled to capacity, drug treatment for women in jail, healthcare benefits and Mental Health Court) saved the city $14.1 million dollars in 2016!
Abundant gratitude to our Second Church family and friends that have recently invested in the sacred work of Doing Justice! For those desiring to invest in BUILD's mission, do note that for every $1 invested; $58 is leveraged in our community! Where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also. Matthew 6:21
Seeking justice in action is a faithful response to the Bible's teachings. Second’s Justice Ministry Team: Bill and Fredda Moody, Jim Drahovzal and Judy Maxson are looking forward to hearing about your concerns for family, friends and our community at our Listening-
House Meetings this September-October Your invitation will be coming soon!
The advantage of knowledge is this: wisdom preserves the life of its possessor. Ecc. 7:12b
