As we approach Holy Week, our thoughts turn to the ordeal Jesus faced for us and with us. Such is our personal God. What follows is a poem written by a friend of mine shortly after his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Jesus’ ordeal gave strength to my friend for his ordeal. The poem is a fitting Holy Week reflection for us.

God of Tears God of tears, who weeps with us and holds our trembling hands. God of fears, embraces us when we’re too weak to stand. God of worried, restless nights has eyes that never sleep. God of sorrow, sighs with us when visited by grief. The times when we are most alone is when He is most near, And when we are engulfed by fog, His vision crystal clear. He’s with us in each darkened hour and suffers every loss Because He gave up heaven’s realms for nails upon a cross.

Blessings,

Dan

Where does this passion come from? This courage to risk? Does it have anything to do with his age? Is there a wisdom that comes from seeing with fresh eyes? What might five young preachers be able to show us about the events of Holy Week? These preachers are under the age of 32.

Recently in a Moment for Mission a representative from the Presbyterian Foundation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) spoke in worship about the opportunity to create a faith legacy by including Second Church in our wills and estate planning. The Permanent Funds Ministry of our Finance Committee would like every member to consider this stewardship challenge. Some of our members have included Second Church in their will and estate planning. Other members might like to obtain more information on how to do so. Please complete the tear off below and return it to the church office via mail or the Sund ay offering plate. Your response will be very helpful to our church’s future.

Doreen Tetzlaff Memorial Hat Auction To Benefit Meals On Wheels

Many of you well remember Doreen and Roger Tetzlaff, very active members of Second for many years. Doreen passed away in April of 2010 and as a lovely and vibrant lady, left behind a large collection of hats which Roger has donated for an auction to benefit Meals On Wheels. Many of these hats were acquired during her years in Switzerland and France, where she worked with clothing designer Pierre Balmain. There are hats of all styles and seasons-Easter, Derby, dress-

up for grandchildren, and all-occasion. The silent auction will be held in the Gathering Place on Sundays and ending on Easter, April 24 . There will be a $5 minimum bid, so bid for yourself, your grandchildren, friends, and family! The winning bidder may pick up their hat(s) after the 11:00 a.m., service on Easter. There will be a hat box for collection of checks, made payable to Meals On Wheels, in the Gathering Place. In the event that you are not in attendance on that day, checks may be given to Shawn Ray in the church office. Please come and give your support to this very worthy cause. Note: The winning bidder may not take the amount paid as a tax deduction.

MISSION TRIP TO WEST VIRGINIA Join us on this year’s mission trip to West Virginia with the West Virginia Ministry of Advocacy and Workcamps on June 12-17 !! Last year, we repaired a roof and drywall that had been damaged by floods. If you’re willing to work hard, laugh even harder and share the love of the Lord with each other and by our actions, please consider joining us. For more information contact Ray Davis (272-1389).

WRITE A LETTER - IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE! Please join other Second members in writing two-minute letters to our members of Congress in the Gathering Place on May 1 and 8. This year Bread for the World asks us to urge Congress to reform the way the U.S. delivers foreign assistance so it will be more

I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws. Psalm 119:30

Some popular, widely held ideas about nutrition can just be myth. Let's consider a few: Myth #1 Don't eat after 8PM if you are trying to lose weight. Truth: In the end, it's about calories in, calories out. Skipping dinner because it is too late will probably cause you to eat more the next day. Myth #2 A high protein/low carbohydrate diet is a healthy way to lose weight. Truth: This type of diet is usually high in saturated fat and cholesterol, low in fiber, and can lead to a buildup of ketones--all of which may cause serious health problems. Most importantly, this diet is not maintainable--a balanced diet is always better! Myth #3 Skip breakfast to lose weight. Truth: Research shows that people who skip breakfast tend to consume more calories and are heavier than those who don't skip. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day helps control appetite and prevents overeating. Myth #4 "Reduced fat", "low fat", and "non-fat" foods have fewer calories. Truth: These foods often add sugar, flour, or starch thickeners- all of which add calories. Compare the labels to see if you really are saving anything. Myth #5 Vitamin supplements provide all you need for good health. Truth: Vitamins don't make up for poor diet, but may help fill nutritional gaps. They are called supplements for a reason! Myth #6 Items bought in health food stores are better for me. Truth: These items often cost more but may not have greater nutritional value than food from grocery stores. The best idea is to eat a diet that is not processed and is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Myth #7 "Cholesterol-free" means a product is heart healthy. Truth: Cholesterol is important to factor in, but the bigger culprits are saturated fats and trans fats. Read labels and ingredients lists to get the real scoop. Myth #8 Sugar causes diabetes. Truth: Simply eating sugar doesn't cause diabetes. The main risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are being overweight and inactive. Jackie Graves, Parish Nurse

Remnant Community Church began holding services at our house on August 13, 2009 at 100 Blue Heron Place. There were 25 people in attendance and we came together to celebrate Christ as our Savior. As the ministry began to grow we changed our service times to Sunday evenings at 5:00 pm and Bible study on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm. And in December of 2010 God answered our prayer and blessed us to begi n to use the Chapel at Second Presbyterian Church! We have felt nothing but love and acceptance and are so grateful for the kindness you guys have shown us. We pray God will continue to bless each one of you for your kindness.
