DASK (Divorced and Separated Koinonia)

Mount St. Joseph Retreat Center | April 5-7th | 2019

Many people have encountered Jesus during Koinonia retreats in

parishes throughout the Diocese of Owensboro. DASK is a Koi-nonia specifically for those who are divorced or separated. Sever-al members of the Owensboro Koinonia community are collabo-rating with Springfield, Ill Koinonia to bring DASK to our Dio-cese for the first time. This will be an overnight, spiritual retreat focused on the resurrection and new life. The team is now forming. Mount Tabor is a crag-gy, steep, cone-shaped mountain south-east of Nazareth. There is a church on top of the mountain that commem-orates the Transfigura-tion with chapels full of beautiful paintings, mu-rals and mosaics depict-ing the event; Jesus with the three disciples,

Jesus with Moses and Elijah; and of course, Jesus in dazzlingly white clothes. The art work is based on the record of the Transfiguration in the Gospels, but is ultimately the product of the imagination of the artist. The real meaning of the Transfiguration, like all Revelation in the Old and New Testaments, is God’s love for His creation and His hope that we will be aware of His love for us. Moses conveyed God’s commandment that we love God with our whole heart, mind, soul and strength; and love our neigh-bor as ourselves. Elijah conveyed God’s promise that he would send a Messiah. Jesus revealed him-self as our Savior and Lord, our Messiah. Do we believe that?

enduring suffering, insults, moments of support, and relay the intense sacrifice that Christians believe Jesus undertook for

human salvation.

Let’s Talk About Abstinence and Fasting

The Church has two forms of official penitential practices-three if the Eucharistic fast of one hour before Communion is included. Abstinence The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death

to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and or-gans of mammals and fowl. Also forbidden are soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste. On the Fridays outside of Lent the U.S. bishops conference ob-tained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the US to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. They must do some penitential/charitable practice on these Fridays. For most people the easiest practice to consistently fulfill will be the traditional one, to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is an obligatory in the United States as elsewhere. Fasting The law of fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th Birthday (Canon 97) to the 59th Birthday (i.e. the beginning of the 60th year, a year which will be completed on the 60th birthday) to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk). Alcoholic beverages do not break the fast; however, they seem to be contrary to the spirit of doing penance. Those who are excused from fast or abstinence Besides those outside the age limits, those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail, pregnant or nursing women according to need for meat or nourish-ment, manual laborers according to need, guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves without giving great offense or causing enmity and other situations of moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline. Aside from these minimum penitential requirements Catholics are encouraged to impose some personal penance on themselves at other times. It could be modeled after abstinence and fasting. A person could, for example, multiply the number of days they ab-stain. Some people give up meat entirely for religious motives (as opposed to those who give it up for health or other motives). Some religious orders, as a penance, never eat meat. Similarly, one could multiply the number of days that one fasted. The early Church had a practice of a Wednesday and Saturday fast. This fast could be the same as the Church’s law (one main meal and two smaller ones) or stricter, even bread and water. Such freely chosen fasting could also consist in giving up something one enjoys - can-dy, soft drinks, smoking, that cocktail before supper, and so on. This is left to the individual. One final consideration. Before all else we are obliged to perform the duties of our state in life. Any deprivation that would seriously hinder us in carrying out our work, as students, employees or par-ents would be contrary to the will of God.

Help the NCYC bound High School Youth at St. Francis attend the National Catholic

Youth Conference. In November the HSYM will attend NCYC-this fundraiser will help

youth afford the trip to Indianapolis. Every Thursday from April-November if you men-

tion SFDS Youth Group when you purchase a Meal at Fazoli’s our youth will receive a portion of the profit. PLUS you will get a

great warm Meal!! Thank you to all that sup-ported our Fazoli’s Fundraisers in the past and we look forward to success with this

fundraiser in the future! HSYM-Will have a once a month Bible study. Our first one will

be on March 17th 5-7PM in the St. Jane Francis Building Conference Room. Coffee, Tea and snacks included.

Faith Formation's 20th ANNUAL “CARING HANDS, LOVING HEARTS” Food Drive kicks off in parishes on

March 16-17. This annual project benefits Paducah Coop-erative Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul and River City Mis-sion. Grocery bags will be provided and are available near the exit doors. Please fill a grocery bag with food and re-turn it on the weekends of March 23/24 or March 30/31.

Over 100,000 pounds of food have been collected from the drives of the last 18 years. Monetary donations may be

placed in a marked envelope and dropped in the regular collection basket at Mass. All donations, whether large or small, are greatly appreciated and important in making a real difference in the lives of hungry men, women, and

children in Paducah. Thank you for your support and gen-erosity! May you and family have a meaningful and

fruitful celebration of Lent.


The Ice House Gallery is looking for Religious Artists to enter our very first Religious Art Show. Entries will be judged on the emotion the artwork evokes. Categories are: Peaceful, Joyful, Somber, and Telling a Story. Awards are: $250 Best in Show, $125 1st Place and $50 2nd Place in each of four categories. Member entry fees: $25 for one artwork and $10 for each addi-tional piece. Non-member entry fees: $30 for one artwork and $15 for each additional piece. Submit entries to the Ice House Gallery Tuesday, April 30 (open 10-5 pm daily) to Saturday, May 4 (open 10-1 pm). The awards will be presented at the opening reception Friday, May 10, 5-7 pm. The Religious Art Show will run until Friday, June 7, 2019. The Ice House Gallery is located at 120 N 8th St., Mayfield, KY.
