ACT research shows that it is the rigor of high school courses---rather than simply the number of courses---that best preparesstudents for college. ACT data show that students who take andwork hard in higher-level courses such as Physics and an advancedmath class beyond Algebra II are most likely to be college ready.

The Chicago Public School Challenge

Eighty-five percent of Chicago’s 430,00 public school students are poor, as defined by eligibility for participation in free or reduced-cost lunch programs. Many are members of minorities; many have limited proficiency in English. Like students everywhere, these students are striving for a good education and prosperous future. Many face hurdles unimaginable in the nearby suburbs. For example, most Chicago high schools have well over 2,000 students, but only three or four counselors in the entire school to meet their needs.

Page 29: Second Annual Minnesota Assessment Conference EXPLORE & PLAN Report Card: How Did Minnesota Students Perform?

Chicago Public School system wanted to:

• increase the college readiness of students,

• increase the numbers of students who take a rigorous curriculum and set their sights on getting into the most challenging college for which they are qualified,

• improve high school graduation rates and college attendance rates, and

• provide a basis for curricular interventions to improve student performance.

CPS EPAS Results

• The number of students taking the ACT has continued to grow each year, representing opportunity for more students.

• Student performance is improving.

• Most students are planning to enter some form of postsecondary education.

• More students are taking the right number of core courses in 2006 compared to 2002.

Page 31: Second Annual Minnesota Assessment Conference EXPLORE & PLAN Report Card: How Did Minnesota Students Perform?

EXPLORE & PLAN Details• Order as soon as possible• PLAN testing--take the

time for students to complete the UNIACT Interest Inventory (9,735 did not take inventory)

• Visit ACT website at www.act.org to view information on supplemental reporting services

• Attend 1 of 5, no-cost state EXPLORE & PLAN Implementation Workshops in Nov. or Dec.

• The MDE will not pay for pre-gridding (EXPLORE) or ID labels (PLAN) this year---school/district expense for 2006-07

• To avoid unnecessary additional costs by MDE, return EXPLORE Special Testing material
