CHRONICLE SECOND ALL-UNION CONFERENCE ON "PRESENT-DAY PROBLEMS OF THERMAL CONVECTION" G. Z. Gershuni and E. M. Zhukhovitskii UDC 532.5.01 : 536.25(06) The conference was held in Perm from May 27-30, 1975. It was organized by the Scientific Council of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR on tile Mechanics of Liquids and Gases. the Division of the Physics of Polymers of the Ural Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of tae USSR, PermState University, and the Perm Pedagogical Institute (chairman of the organizing committee Professor I. G. Shaposhnikov). The conference was attended by representatives of the main scientific organization of the country, carry- ing out investigations in the field of thermal convection: these included academic and branch institute, higher institutions of learning, construction offices, and industrial enterprises (89 organizations in all). 215 scientists from 32 cities of the country took part in the work of the conference. At the 22 sessions, 144 papers were heard and discussed. T~hree papers were given at the plenary session. G. A. Ostroumov and Yu. K. Stishkov (Leningrad) devoted their paper to a general analysis of electro- convective phenomena in weakly conducting liquids in a constant electrical field. Tl~e principal stress was laid on a discussion of ti~e mechanisms of instability, specifically, of the mechanism due to three-dimensional in- homogeneity of the conductivity. They also discussed the effect of an electrical field on heat transfer. The paper was accompanied by demonstrations of experiments. The paper of Yu. P. Bulashevich and Yu. V. Khach' (Sverdlovsk) discussed a two-component model of a convectively unstable asthenospherical layer of the upper mantle of the Earth. On the basis of this model, the methods of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes were used to study the conditions for convective in- stability and the special characteristics of the migration of radioactive elements. A mechanism is proposed which explains the distribution of some elements in the substance of the Earth. M. P. Vlasyuk and V. I. Polezhaev (Moscow) gave a review paper on the results of numerical investiga- tions carried out by the authors on convection in layers of a permeable porous material. Data on heat transfer as a function of the orientation of the layers are discussed. Examples are given of the use of the results ob- tained in energetics, in construction techniques, in high-temperature and high-pressure techniques, etc. At the conference, three sections worked in parallel. I. Convection in cavities and channels. The convective boundary layer. II. Convective instability. Ques- tions in geo- and astrophysics. III. Convection in media with special properties. The action of an electro- magnetic field. Mixed questions of hydrodynamics and heat transfer. The sessions of section I discussed papers devoted to theoretical and experimental investigations of laminar and turbulent convection in closed volumes and in an open space. A considerable amount of attention was paid to convective problems arising in various applied fields (thermal stratification in vessels for the storage of petroleum products and cryogenic liquids, convective phenomena in optical units, etc.). At the sessions of section II there were discussions oftheresults of new investigations related to linear and nonlinear questions of the convective stability of equilibrium and the stability of convective motions. The greatest amount of attention was attracted by questions connected with the clarification of the action of various complicating factors on stability, i.e., a magnetic field, rotation, diffusion, modulation of the parameters, in- ternal heat sources, infiltration, special characteristics of the theological behavior of the medium, etc. A separate session was devoted to a discussion of mixed problems of geo- and astrophysics. The theme of s e s s i o n IlI was ma in ly connected with quest ions of the cour se of convect ive phenomena in the p re sence of a l l kinds of compl ica t ing c i r c u m s t a n c e s . Here there were d i scussed convective phenomena in c h e m i c a l l y act ive, non-Newtonian, and d i s p e r s e media . A g rea t deal of i n t e r e s t was evoked by communica t ions on convect ion under s i n g l e - p h a s e condit ions in conducting and f e r r om a gne t i c l iquids. Separa te s e s s i o n s were devoted to quest ions of hydrodynamics and neat t r a n s f e r in f i lms and j e t s , as wel l as to e l ec t roconvec t ive

phe nome ha.

The conference demons t r a t ed that in r ecen t yea r s there has been fur ther development of inves t iga t ion in the field of t ime ly p rob lems of convect ive heat and mass t r a n s f e r . Significant new r e s u l t s have been ob- ta ined in the study of fundamental and appl ied quest ion. At the s a m e t ime, it was brought out that ce r t a in im- por tant d i rec t ions have not been developed with suff icient in tens i ty . Thus, m o r e at tent ion should be paid to quest ions of turbulent convect ion, as well as to the in t roduct ion of new up- to -da te e x p e r i m e n t a l methods of in- ves t iga t ion (holography, l a s e r tecnniques) .

A r e so lu t i on adopted at the conference noted the mos t impor tan t d i r ec t ions of inves t iga t ions . Among them a r e : intense convect ion under turbulent and t r ans i t i ona l condit ions; convect ive phenomena in s t rong cen t r i fuga l f ie lds; convect ion in l iquids with spec i a l t heo log ica l p r o p e r t i e s , in porous, mul t iphase , and p o l a r - izing media ; the cont ro l of convect ive s t a b i l i t y using var ious phys ica l fac to rs ; the development of effect ive ana ly t i ca l and numer i ca l methods for the solut ion of nonlinear p rob lems , in p a r t i c u l a r , t h r e e - d i m e n s i o n a l p rob l ems of convection.

A b r i e f s u m m a r y of the contents of a l l the papers at the conference is contained in a co l lec t ion of ab- s t r a c t s put out at the opening of the conference .

rne nexr conference on convect ion is scheduled for 1978 in Leningrad .
