Examples of Crowdfunding for Community Improvement in Memphis

• Ioby partnered with Livable Memphis (nonprofit), launching “Create Memphis”

• Hampline: innovative bicycle infrastructure project. Raised $68,000 from public in Oct 2013

• We Are Family Neighborhood Center: repairs to establish a community building.

Impact Investing with AHP• American Homeowner Preservation: empowers

accredited investors to pool money online to buy shares of distressed mortgages, generating impactful social returns

• Success story: AHP sold vacant, neglected property to new homeowner, helped revitalized blighted community in Kansas City

• Started as 501(c)3 non-profit in 2008

Habitat for Humanity• Dave McMurty- offered to create a

crowdfunding initiative for Habitat for Humanity International.

• Ran project in Colombia: build and fund five homes. Raised $200,000, putting 250 homeless people back into housing.

• Success: Helped change the relationship between H4H in Colombia and the government of Colombia

• Since then, H4H has raised over $1 Million through crowdfunding (Share.habitat platform)

Fundrise crowdfunds to save the Nation’s oldest African-American Owned Bookstore

• Historical bookstore in San Francisco: Marcus Books

• Raised $1 million through Fundrise (out of the $2.6 million needed which is the property value)

• Had raised $1.6 million through Westside Community Services (local non-profit organization), then went to Fundrise

• Crowdfunding saved this small business + two apartments located overhead

Enterprise LLC• The firm specializes in working

with the Veterans Affairs to resell high opportunity properties to qualified purchasers.

• Region in Georgia near a military base where potential homeowners would qualify for the Veteran Administration (VA) loan program

Crowdfunding and Community Development

•Invest in our communities, not just the property of our communities

•Focus on rehabilitation for residential homes

•Work with local developers know and love their neighborhood, as opposed to large corporations

•Philosophy of “having your friends, family, neighbors” invest in your projects
