Weight is determined within afew seconds.

The seca 954 can be moved on castorsand its low power consumption combinedwith its rechargeable batteries mean it willprovide long, mobile service. The seca 954 chair scale is made for peo-ple who are not especially steady on theirfeet. To give you a safe feeling whileweighing, the chair scale has a solid tubu-lar frame and a firmly bolted seat. The free-running casters make the scale very easyto move. The wheel-locking lever, togetherwith the swiveling armrests and foot sup-ports, makes it easier to sit in safety. The scale is of a very sturdy constructionand will give you long and loyal service. Itis easy to operate and the large display iseasy to read.

2. Safety

Before using the new scale, please take a little time to read the following safety instruc-tions. • Follow the safety instructions in the in-

struction manual.• Keep the operating manual and the

declaration of conformity contained therein in a safe place.

• Have scale serviced on a regular basis (see “Servicing” on page 22).

• Be sure to use only the seca mains unit supplied. Before plugging the mains unit into a socket, check that the mains voltage indicated on the mains unit matches local mains voltage.

• Ensure that the cables are not crushed and do not come into contact with hot objects.

• Use only the type of battery stated (see “Spare parts and accessories” on page 23).

• Prevent the scale from rolling away ac-cidentally. Use the wheel brake when the patient is sitting down or getting up and assist people who are unsteady on their feet.

• When using the scale with a mains unit, ensure that the supply cable is routed in such a way as to exclude any type of tripping hazard.

– Fit the seat to the frame using the fourself-tapping plastic screws. Check thatthe seat is screwed tightly to the framewith no play at all.

– Push the hinge bolts for the armreststhrough the hinge bushes on the seatframe. Put on the washer and cap nut(M10) and screw them tight.

Power supplyThe scale is powered by a mains unit and by rechargeable batteries.Connecting the rechargeable battery pack– Open the battery compartment in the

base of the display housing.– Connect the plug contacts to the re-

chargeable battery pack located in thebattery compartment.

– Close the lid of the battery compart-ment again.

The LC display and the evaluation electronics have a low power consumption – 1,000weighing operations can be performed with a fully charged battery.Once battery voltage is no longer adequate, the battery symbol first appears inthe display to indicate that battery power is dropping. If the batteries are not charged, battery voltage will ultimately not be adequate for error-free measuring. In this case, bAtt appears in the display and weighing is no longer pos-sible.

Other controlsThe armrests on the chair scale can be swivelled backwards independently. This is usefulbecause it makes it easier for the person being weighed to sit down. – Ensure that you do not trap any part of

the body or pieces of clothing whenfolding the rests down.

– The rear casters can be locked if youpush down the two locking levers onthe casters. This device should be usedwhen the patient is sitting down on thescale or getting up from it.

– Once the person who is to be weighedis seated, the foot-rests are pulled outand tilted downwards. The patient cannow place his or her feet on the foot-rests.

Correct weighing– Press the Start key.

se(a, 8.8.8.8.8. and 0.0 appear consec-utively in the display. The scale is thenautomatically set to zero and ready touse.

– If necessary, switch the weight display(see page 19).

– Get the patient to sit on the scale.– The patient’s weight can only be deter-

mined once he or she is no longer incontact with the floor. Be sure, there-fore, that the patient’s feet are on thefoot rest throughout the weighing oper-ation.

– Hold the key down again to deactivatethe Tare function; the scale is then backin normal weighing mode and the tarevalue has been erased.

– The tare value is likewise erased by thescale being switched off.

Store weight value (HOLD)You can also continue displaying the weight determined once the load has been removed. This makes it possible to look after a patient first, before having to note the weight:– Press the HOLD/TARE key whilst the

load is on the scale.

“HOLD” appears in the digital display. Thevalue is stored until the scale switches offautomatically.– The HOLD function can be switched off

by pressing the HOLD key again.0.0 appears in the display if the scale hasno load on it, otherwise the current weight. The “HOLD“ display vanishes.

Note:The HOLD and TARE functions can also be used simultaneously.

Body Mass Index (BMI)Body Mass Index puts height and weight in relationship to one another, providing moreaccurate information than ideal Broca weight, for example. A tolerance range is givenwhich is considered ideal for health. The Body Mass Index applies only to adults: thesevalues are not relevant to children and young people.– Press the Start key.

se(a, 8.8.8.8.8. and 0.0 appear con-secutively in the display. The scale isthen automatically set to zero and readyfor operation.

– Press the FUNC key. On the display, you will see the lastheight entered.

Evaluating Body Mass Index:Compare the value determined with the categories shown below.

• BMI below 18:Warning, this patient weighs too little. There could be a tendency to anorexia. An in-crease in weight is recommended to improve well-being and performance. If in doubt, consult a specialist.

• BMI between 18 and 20:Patient is at lower weight limit. If he feels well and is completely healthy, his weight canstay as it is.

• BMI between 20 and 25:The patient is of a normal weight. He can stay as he his.

• BMI between 25 and 30:The patient is slightly to moderately overweight. He should cut his weight if he is al-ready ill (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, gout, fat metabolism disorders).

• BMI over 30:Weight reduction is essential. Metabolism, cardiovascular system and bones are all un-der strain. A consistent diet, plenty of movement and behavioural training are all rec-ommended. If in doubt, consult a specialist.

6. What do I do if…

… no weight display comes on?– Is the scale switched on?– Check the mains connection and the connection of the battery pack.– Switch the scale off for a few seconds. This can be done by opening the plug connect-

ed to the rechargeable battery block and unplugging the mains supply from the scale.

… 0.0 does not appear before weighing?– Switch off the scale with the Start key and start the scale again – there must not be

any load on the scale – and only its feet should be in contact with the floor.

… one segment is illuminated constantly or not at all?– The relevant segment has a fault. Inform Servicing.

… the display shows ?– Battery voltage is dropping. Charge the rechargeable batteries in the next few days.

… batt appears in the display?– The rechargeable battery is so severely discharged that weighing is no longer possible.

Recharge the battery.

… St0p appears in the display?– Maximum load has been exceeded.

… the display flashes?– If you have just activated the Hold or Tare function, please wait until the scale has de-

tected a steady weight value. The display will then stop flashing.– If there has been no activation of a function beforehand, remove the load from the scale

and wait until 0.0 is displayed, then weigh again.

… the display appears?– The ambient temperature of the scale is too high or too low. Place the scale in an

ambient temperature between +10 °C and +40 °C. Wait about 15 minutes for thescale to adapt to the ambient temperature and then weigh again.

… the display E and a number appear?– Switch off the scale with the Start key and start the scale again. The scale will then

work normally again. If this is not the case, disconnect the power supply by briefly removing the batteries. Ifthis measure is equally unsuccessful, inform the Service department.
