Happy summer! While school’s out, our 17-18 pledge pro-gram is still in full swing and comes to completion on Au-gust 31st. So, for those of you who have not yet made a gift toward the pledge program, there’s still time! Doing so will help your child’s class reach 100% participation and receive the $500 grant to go toward their Eighth Grade End-of-Year trip. Congratulations to Mr. Brosio’s class for ending the school year with every child represented by a pledge! And, a big heartfelt thank you to all pledgers for your commitment and generosity toward our dear school. Contributions toward the pledge program, however large or small, make a positive difference for the success of Sebastopol Charter’s Waldorf programming, our beautiful children and the progress of our unified campus construction. For those who would still like to give a gift of pledge, please consider our online donation option and click the yellow Donate icon. You can download a pledge form here or online donations, please go here.

Thanks, again! Cheers to a wonderful summer!

the Directorby Chris Topham, Executive Director

We had a lovely ending of the school year with more last-time-on-the-old-campus events. The rose ceremony on the knoll next to the K-2 campus was beautiful, as always. The 8th grade graduation was profound with lots of sweet moments. Although we’ll have more oppor-tunities for events on the new campus, we’ll see where

we’ll want our 8th grade graduations.

The summer “break” has begun, but it’s not so much a break for the staff, especially this summer, as we’re busy handling the move and transition to the new campus, and we’re planning for next school year on a new campus. We’ve already had multiple moves of furniture and boxes to the assembly hall, which is about three times larger than the assembly hall at the former downtown campus. We’ve been lucky to have had so many parents volunteer to help with moving various items, which has saved the school thousands of dollars. Thank you!

On June 11, we had a board meeting, which included a discussion about the proposed budget for 2018-2019 and the school’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP includes the school’s 11 priorities, which includes the five required state priorities plus lo-cal priorities established by input from the parent survey and other stakeholders’ input. Every priority includes how we’re allocating our funds from the school’s budget.

The new campus development is on time and on budget. This school is so fortunate to have a supportive non-profit foundation that has such loyal and generous donations from parents. Without these donations, the school would not be able to move to a per-manent, unified campus. Although almost every charter school has to pay for its facilities from their general budget, very few own the facilities they’re occupying. This security of not being evicted by a landlord and financial long-term advantage will make our school even stronger. (We felt that potential nightmare when we received a notification that we couldn’t continue renting the K-2 campus). We’re especially pleased that we have accomplished this strategic stabilizing change for the school without any extreme compromises. We will continue to provide the superb education the school is known for, and, in fact, we now have more opportunities for provid-ing programs we couldn’t on the old campuses, such as providing after-care, expansion of athletics and a gardening/farm program. Thank you, parents!

Another exciting development is that we are the first charter school in the nation to have been approved a sub-license for the use of the words Public Waldorf in the school’s name by the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education and the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America. We were approved after a lengthy process, which included a site visit by representatives from the Alliance. So, in addi-tion to moving to a new campus, we may be changing our school’s name, which actually is good timing. New campus, new name and new opportunities. Lots of great changes!

Farewell Senora Danielle! These last three years at Sebasto-pol Charter School have been a life changing experience that I will always cherish. Teaching all the grades and even kindergarten Span-ish this year, and getting to know

over three hundred students during my time at the school has been a gift, both electrifying and humbling. I will always remember my time at the Sebastopol Charter and am grateful to remain a part of the parent community as seventh grader Mateo’s mom. I hope to see you and your chil-dren around the new campus and at community events!

Charter Foundation Happenings

It’s moving time and seeing all of our parent volunteers is incredibly touching. There are no words to describe the coming together of our community to see this through. It really is amazing,

There are more opportunities to help build and create something meaningful. Move your child’s desk, and few more boxes, and be a part of the group effort!

We are now in the home stretch of our new campus project!

The new campus’ administration building is just about ready, and the entrance at Mill Station Road is nearing completion, with asphalt paving between the highway and the West County Trail going in this week. If you go by the school’s entrance, you’ll see that the sidewalk extension and bus stop on the highway along with the enhanced public access to the West County Trail are in place. The school will also be provid-ing a pedestrian-activated illuminated crosswalk across Gravenstein at Danmar to improve public safety at that location. Our 3-8 grade class-room modulars are now in their final settings, with the K-2 classrooms arriving by month’s end.

This has been a big job for us to build! We’re looking forward to the completion of construction and to our school’s opening day in Sep-tember!

And don’t forget to sign up & volunteer!!!

Spring Math Projectsby Rebecca Davenport, Math Teacher

Toward the end of the year it’s nice to do something a little differentinmathclass, andthisyearallthreeofthemiddlegrades spent time working on projects. They showed so much creativity and persistence in their work, with great results.

In 6th grade, the students used geometric transformations and some inspiration from M. C. Escher to create unique tes-sellations.

In 7th grade, the students studied probability. In groups, they built games of chance, then calculated and/or ran tests to predict the likelihood of winning. Finally, they invited the 5th grade to come and play the games, kept track of the results, andwroteuptheirfindings, comparingtheirpredictionswithwhat really happened.

The8thgradeengagedintwoprojects:first,theychoseanddrew one of the semi-regular tessellations. Later, concurrent withtheirstudyofdifferentnumberbases, theylearnedhowto do some basic HTML and JavaScript programming.

Every student successfully wrote a code that takes a deci-mal number and converts it to binary, and a few took on the extra-credit challenge of also writing code to convert a bi-

narynumbertodecimal.RemiRogofftookit a further step by embedding the code in a webpage.

Thank you for a fantastic school year! It seemed to have flown by and we are more than excited about next years adventures at the new campus.

End of Year Reports will be mailed out during the first week of July. If you have any mail address changes, please notify the office so we can update your information. Even if you re-registered with your new address, we do not have record of that yet.

Speaking of our Online Registration - thank you for your patience while we rolled this out this year. Special thanks to Daniel Swid for navigating our system and making it user friendly for all of you! Phase 2 will allow parents to update their informa-tion during the school year. We will be working on that this fall.

Deadlines: Incoming Kindergarteners will need to turn in their child’s health forms by June 25. Incoming 7th Grade will need to turn in their im-munization record by Aug 31. Please refer to your letter that was mailed in May.

Another reminder that Office Hours will go through June and re-start in August at our new campus, 1111 Gravenstein Hwy N, Sebastopol. We look forward to greeting you there!

Have a wonderful summer break!
