What are the 2 Jobs of the Respiratory System?
#1 - MOVES OXYGEN FROM THE OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT INTO THE BODY
#2 - REMOVES CARBON DIOXIDE AND WATER FROM THE BODY
Bronchi keep dividing until they _____________________ (ends) in air sacs called alveoli Terminates

Lecture 6
maintain homeostasis
Remove wastes through excretion (urination).
Regulates the chemical composition (what chemicals and how much of each chemical) of body fluids by removing wastes and keeping the right amounts of water, salts, and nutrients.
The average adult produces 1.5 Liters of urine a day.
The skin excretes excess water and salts in the form of sweat.
The lungs excrete carbon dioxide.
The kidneys also play a major role in excretion.
remove waste products from the blood.
maintains blood pH.regulate the water content of the blood and, therefore, blood volume.
Blood enters the kidney through the renal artery.
The kidney removes urea, excess water, and other waste products through filtration and passes them to the ureter.
The clean, filtered blood leaves the kidney through the renal vein and returns to the body.
A kidney has two distinct regions: The inner part is called the renal medulla.
The outer part is called the renal cortex.
A tube, called the ureter, leaves each kidney, carrying urine to the urinary bladder.
There are two tubes, one from each kidney.
The urinary bladder is a saclike organ where urine is stored before being excreted.
A full bladder holds about 500mL of urine
The tube that leads from the bladder to the outside of the body.
The urethra is of different lengths in each sex.Males – about 8 inchesFemales – about 1.5 inches
Humans have two kidneys, but can survive with only one.
If both kidneys are damaged by disease or injury, there are two options: a kidney transplant kidney dialysis
Kidney stones – crystallized mineral salts and uric acid saltsin the urine. Stones block flow of urine and cause excruciating pain.
Kidney failure - can be caused by long-term diabetes, infections, physical injuries, chemical poisoning. Causes toxic materials to build up to lethal levels.
