SEASONS

Derives from the weather pattern in middle latitudes where the onset of growth in plants and the reawakening of nature from a period of stasis can be separated from the hot season, when crops ripen and trees lose their leaves, and the cold season.

The Seasons are divisions of the year which relate to the annual changes in the weather. The classical division into the four seasons; Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn (Fall)

Cause of The SeasonsCause of The Seasons

This means that the direction of the Sun's rays relative to the ground and the number of daylight hours change during the year and hence the amount of solar energy received at different latitudes changes during the year.

The cause of the seasons is that the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun is inclined to the plane of the Equator.

Astronomically the arrangement of the planes of the orbit of the Earth and its equator are such that the planes intersect at two times, the Equinoxes, when the length of the day and night are equal.

These times can be determined very accurately and, as they occur near the timeswhen the seasons are changing, have been used to indicate the start of each season.

Mid-way between these are the Solstices, when the Sun is at its highest and lowest in the sky at mid-day.

What is Equinox?

Thus Spring is deemed to start at the Vernal Equinox (near March 21), Summer at the Summer Solstice (near June 21),

Autumn at the Autumn Equinox (near September 21) and Winter at the Winter Solstice (near December 21).

In the southern hemisphere the cycle is displaced by half a year.

WINTERWINTER

In  winter the days are shorter and the nights longer. That means there is less time for the sun to warm us during short winter days.

Freezing!!!And winter has long cold nights.

SPRINGSPRING

Spring has arrived. The snows of winter are gone, and wild flowers will soon be blooming.

The world seems filled with new life and new hopes. It's time to find swimming suits and baseball gloves and plan summer trips.

SUMMERSUMMER

When the North Pole points toward the sun, the sun's rays hit the northern half of the world more directly.

That means it is warmer and we have summer.

Summer is even warmer and winter is colder because of the length of our days and nights. In the summer daylight lasts longer and nighttime is shorter.

FALLFALL

It is almost autumn, the season of change! In the north the hottest days of summer are past and each day is shorter than the last.

Trees will soon turn brilliant colors. Summer vacation is over and school is in full swing. Soon it will be time for hot cocoa and warm coats.
