    Sothebys Geneva will present over 700 lots in its May sale of Magnificent Jewels

    and Noble Jewels. The two-day auction will open with the sale of the jewellery

    collection of Suzanne Belperron (1900-1983), one of the most influential jewellery

    designers of the 20th century. Further to this, the sale will showcase one of the

    most important historic diamonds ever to come to auction: The Beau Sancy.

    Passed down through four royal families and worn by Marie de Medici in her crown

    at her coronation in 1610, the celebrated diamond is estimated at $2-4 million.

    Other gems of great historical significance offered for auction include The Murat

    Tiara (est. $1.5- 2.5 million) and a diamond brooch given to the illustrious Corsini

    family by Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788) during exile (est. $300,000-500,000).

    15 May 2012GENEVAIMPORTANT WATCHES

    On 15 May 2012, Sothebys Geneva new Day sales of Important Watches will pay

    tribute to the founding fathers of modern horology. An entire section is dedicated to

    the celebrated French watch and clockmaker, Breguet a benchmark in the world

    of horology for the past two centuries. Comprised of 45 timepieces dating from

    1785 to 1997, this section reflects the constant search for innovation and the

    distinguished style that has characterised Breguets production since the 18th

    century.

    Covering five centuries of watch history, the 388 lots, estimated in excess of CHF

    10 million comprise iconic pieces from each pivotal era, from a 1540 French table

    clock to an exceptional grande complication pocket watch Reference 959 by Patek

    Philippe (est. CHF 500,000-800,000/$550,000-880,000). The antique pocket

    watches and the Rolex sections are also highlighted by illustrious provenance, with

    many timepieces that belonged to great names of the European aristocracy and

    Rolex models owned by the acclaimed British author, Graham Greene and Ibn

    Saud, the first King of Saudi Arabia.

    15 MayPARISPHOTOGRAPHS

    Sothebys sale will include an exquisite selection of 113 photographs, offering a

    rich overview of work by leading 19th, 20th and 21st century masters. In addition to

    the unrivalled photographic album with nine salt-paper prints, produced by Gustave

    Le Gray for the Salon of 1852 (est. 240,000-280), the section devoted to Historic

    Photography includes a number of very rare images including a superb quarter-

    plate daguerreotype of a Dervish of the Mevlevi Order, taken in the Ottoman

    Empire during the 1840s - one of the first known images of a whirling dervish (est.

    20,000-25,000). The Vintage & Modernist photography section features four

    superb artists portraits by Man Ray depicting Picasso, Mir, Derain, Lger and

    Vlaminck. Furthermore, among the contemporary photographs offered is an icon of

    recent American photography: Joel Sternfelds McLean, Virginia, dated December

    1978, one of the first photographs from his landmark series American Prospects

    (est. 40,000-60,000).

    This sale will offer a remarkable collection of manuscripts, letters and inscribed

    works by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918). Among theexceptional pieces offered are one of the 25 copies of the Case dArmons

    (100,000150,000) and a set of letters written by the poet to his friend Andr

    Level from the Front during the First World War (150,000250,000). Other

    unusual lots appearing in the auction include the only known copy of a photograph

    of Verlaine taken by Carjat in the year he met Rimbaud (20,000-30,000), and a

    precious collection of 90 coloured drawings by Orson Welles elaborating the stage

    settings for his 1962 film, The Trial(est. 30,000-50,000).

    16 MAY 2012LONDONFINE CHINESE CERAMICS AND WORKS OF ART

    Sothebys London auction will offer some of the finest examples of Chinese

    ceramics and works of art available to the market today. The marvellous selection

    of works includes rare and important Imperial ceramics, beautiful jades, Imperial

    seals and Qing monochrome wares many with outstanding provenances. The

    sale comprises two distinguished collections - the Jersey Jades, which belonged to

    the Earl and Countess of Jersey and exquisite Qing Monochromes from a private

    European collection. Leading the sale will be a Qing Dynasty jade Immortal

    brushpot, estimated at 250,000-350,000. The auction of 341 lots has a combined

    estimate in excess of 6.5 million.

    THE GUNTER SACHS COLLECTION

    The two-day auction will present for sale close to 300 artworks and objects from

    the collection of cosmopolitan playboy, photographer, style-icon and cultural

    phenomenon, the late Gunter Sachs. Spanning numerous collecting categories,

    from Surrealism and Nouveau Realism, to Pop Art, Art Deco, Furniture and Graffiti,

    the sale is expected to realise in excess of 20 million. The confluence of zeitgeist,

    exceptional provenance and arresting images by the leading artists and

    photographers of their time, including Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon, makes

    this assemblage one of the most desirable single owner collections ever to come

    to market.

    Sothebys forthcoming auctions of Important Russian Art and Russian Paintingswill offer museum-quality masterpieces spanning important genres in Russian art,

    from superb 19th

    century landscapes to the early avant-garde. Highlighting the

    Important Russian Art sale will be Vasily Vereshchagins The Spy(est. 800,000-

    1,250,000), and one of the most significant paintings by Natalia Sergeevna

    Goncharova ever to be offered at auction, Still Life (Bluebells) (est. 34 million).

    Alongside these paintings, Sothebys will also bring to auction an exceptionally

    rare collection of five ceramics by Mikhail Vrubel and an Important Silver Tureen

    from the Petrovskii Service, circa1750 (est. 200,000-300,000), the earliest and

    most important piece of Imperial silver to appear on the market in recent years.

    24 & 25 May 2012MILANMODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART

    Sothebys is delighted to present, Spazio e Materia, a unique private collection, as

    part of the biannual auction of Modern & Contemporary art held by the company in

    Milan. This expertly curated collection is dedicated to the Italian artists who took an

    innovative approach to space and material, and includes works by Burri, Fontana,Manzoni and Castellani. In total, the sale will offer three works by Burri,

    showcasing three decades of his oeuvre: a 1959 small Combustione, a rare and

    early Cretto dated 1970 and a large 1980 Cellotex. Overall, the sale is expected to

    bring in excess of 10.2 million.

    29 & 30 MAY 2012PARISCONTEMPORARY ART

    From 1960s abstraction (Joan Mitchell) and Andy Warhols Pop Art, to Basquiats

    underground blues and George Condos figuration, the American and English

    schools lead Pariss evening sale of contemporary art. Offering property from three

    prestigious Amercian collections, the sale will present exceptional artworks

    including Nicolas de Stals powerful canvas Composition from 1947 (est.

    700,000-1,000,000), Jean Fautriers iconic oil on canvas, Tte dOtage (est.

    600,000-800,000), and Le Batailleur(est. 150,000-200,000) by Jean Dubuffet, ararity at auction.

    Among the selection of works offered by Sothebys in May are two exceptional

    manuscripts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (175691). The first, a remarkable

    autograph letter signed W.A. Mozart addressed to a fellow freemason, Michael

    Puchberg in June 1799, is a frank and revealing appeal for financial assistance(est. 200,000-300,000). The second is a music manuscript outlining a fugue not

    listed in The Kchel-Verzeichnis. On the verso of the manuscript Mozart corrects a

    music exercise by Thomas Attwood, his most famous English composition pupil

    (est. 120,000-150,000).

    30 May 2012PARISIMPRESSIONIST & MODERN ART

    This sale presents the two most significant portraits of Dora Maar by Picasso to be

    offered in Paris since the auction of the estate of the artists mistress in 1998:

    Femme assise(est. 2-4 million) and Tte de femme(est. 3-5 million). These two

    pictures, from a private European collection, were painted by Picasso in the spaceof three days in December 1939. After the war broke out in the September of that

    year, Picasso settled in the seaside town of Royan with the three women in his life:

    Marie-Thrse, his daughter and Dora Maar. Other highlights include Man Rays

    beautifully provocative silver print photograph The Kiss (est. 1.5-2 million) and

    Salvador Dals Landscape of Port Lligat with Approaching Storm (est. 1.25-1.85

    million).

    4 June 2012ZURICHSWISS ART

    Sothebys Swiss Art sale in Zurich on 4 June will celebrate the greatest Swiss

    painters of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries through iconic places that inspired

    their oeuvres. Leading the sale is a group of major works by the 19th century

    realist master, Albert Anker. Reflecting Ankers unique ability to capture the interior

    world of his sitters are an outstanding 1885 oil portrait of a young girl,

    Mdchenbildnis (est. 1-1.8 million) and an exquisite portrait of a schoolboy,

    Schulknabe dating from 1875 (est. 1.25-1.67 million). Giovanni Giacometti, the

    master of Swiss impressionism, is represented by Valle Fiorita, a stunning

    landscape featuring a blooming valley in the Engadine region. Testament to the

    painters incredible mastery of colour and representation of light, this oil of canvas,

    produced between 1912 and 1924, carries an estimate of 1-1.5 million. Other

    highlights in the sale include important works by Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno

    Amiet.

    6 June 2012PARISDECORATIVE ARTS

    Highlights of this sale span the 20th

    century, encompassing the Wiener Werkstatte,

    French and English Art Nouveau, French Art Deco and European post-war and

    contemporary design. From the Pavillion of Aluminium, a pair of doors designed by

    Jean Prouv in 1953, and once exhibited along the River Seine are a remarkable

    testimony to his architectural work (est. 100,000-150,000). The Lalannes have a

    major presence too in an auction boasting approximately ten lots designed by the

    couple from chairs to lights and sheep.

    EUROPEAN PAINTINGSFive paintings by Vilhelm Hammershi will headline the Scandinavian section of

    Sothebys European Paintings sale. An exceptional offering, the group comes to

    the market following the companys sale of three works by the Danish master in

    November 2011. Four of the paintings depict Hammershis home in Strandgade

    30 in Copenhagen, which provided the backdrop for the artists most iconic and

    celebrated works. The star lot, Ida Reading a Letter, painted in 1899, is expected

    to reach between 500,000-700,000. Together, the group is estimated to bring in

    excess of 1.45 million.

    Spearheading the Greek Sale is The Battle of Trafalgar by ConstantinosVolanakis, which comes to the international art market for the first time in its history

    (est. 200,000-300,000). The sale of European paintings will also comprise of

    important German, Austrian, Spanish and Central European paintings. Please

    12 JUNEPARISAFRICAN & OCEANIC ART

    This sale encompases New Ireland Malangan sculptures, power figures fromCentral Africa and rare, west African bronzes and ivories (including a 16th-century

    Sapi-Portugese ivory). Many of these are unpublished discoveries, and reveal both

    consistencies in tradition and artists individuality across the two continents of

    Africa and Oceania. Of special note in the sale are masks of exceptional rarity and

    quality. As incarnations of spirits, masks in many African cultures are tied to their

    makers most important social and religious rituals; the selection offered by

    Sothebys demonstrate how the most skillful artists achieved an elemental union

    between strength and beauty. The sale also features Arts of Africa, the collection

    of Oliver & Pamela Cobb, descendants of the landmark collector of Egyptian Art,

    Albert Gallatin, and is led by A Fang Male Figure from Gabon (est. 400,000-

    600,000).

    8 June 2012LONDONMODERN & CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ARTINCLUDING INDIAN MINATURE PAINTINGS

    The sale will offer a spectacular group of modern masterpieces by the most

    illustrious South Asian artists such as Raza, Husain and Souza. Top works suchas Razas La Forge (est. 300,000-400,000) and Husains Islam (est. 300,000-

    400,000) convey high artistry alongside inspiration taken from their South Asian

    backgrounds. Together with an eclectic selection of contemporary works, the sale

    will also offer more traditional works such as beautiful miniature paintings and

    scenic Anglo-Indian paintings. The sale comprises 91 lots and is expected to

    realise in excess of 2.1 million.

    Wine lovers are offered the opportunity to acquire vinous gems from the most

    prized Chteaux and Domaines in this June sale, which features two impressive

    collections from continental Europe. The first, from the original cellar of a 500-year-

    old castle, boasts youthful Bordeaux First Growths in addition to historic vintages

    such as 1928 and 1947. The breadth and depth of this collection are remarkable,

    testament to the exquisite taste of its owner. A double magnum of Chteau Latour

    1961, sublime Sauternes as epitomised by Chteau dYquem 1943 and a magnum

    of Romane-Conti 1986 are among the star lots. The second collection, from an

    18th-century chteau, was amassed over the past two decades for the pure

    pleasure of entertaining. The Bordeaux ranges from 1955 to 2006 and features

    First Growths alongside top Right Bank wines, while an array of Burgundy from

    1953 to 2006 is interspersed with rare vintages of Domaine de la Romane-Conti.

    Legendary Italian wines, iconic Californian estates and Champagne add to the

    appeal of this sale.

    13 June 2012PARISASIAN ART

    Sothebys sale will offer a selection of precious works from Asia. Leading the sale

    will be an exceptional rare, large cinnabar lacquer box and cover, finely carved

    with the Eight Immortals gathering on a terrace in an open garden setting, and

    inscribed with a Yongle mark of the period (14031424), estimated at 100,000-

    150,000. Also attesting to the quality of the auction are a fine group of Ming and

    Qing jades, many with Imperial provenance, and works of art from a private

    European collection formed in the early 20th century in China.

    19 & 20 June 2012LONDONIMPRESSIONIST & MODERN ART

    Sothebys evening sale will include a selection of works of exceptional quality and

    importance. Leading the auction will be Pierre Bonnards Nu Debout(est. 4.5-5.5

    million), a masterpiece from the artists mature period, Marc Chagalls LAbre de

    Jess (est. 3-5 million), a splendid work acquired directly from the artist never

    before acquired privately or at auction, and Paul Delvauxs sensuous Deux

    Femmes Couches(est. 2-3 million). Other highlights include important paintings

    by Fernand Lger, Max Beckmann and Pablo Picasso.

    26 & 27 June 2012LONDONCONTEMPORARY ART

    Sothebys forthcoming Contemporary Art Evening auction in London will be

    highlighted by highly desirable and fresh-to-market works by the most important

    contemporary artists. The array of major Post-war and contemporary artworks will

    be headlined by Gerhard Richters Untitledoil on canvas which is estimated at

    2.53.5 million. Other highlights by international blue-chip artists include works by

    Jean-Michel Basquiat, Glenn Brown, Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol, and paintings

    from exceptional private collections.

    Sothebys Paris is delighted to present its first ever sale of comics. Comprising nearly

    100 works, the auction will include items by the most emblematic artists from the

    early 20th century until today. Comics have always enjoyed a close relationship with

    fine art, and leading the sale will be the cover of Album La Dviation (1980 aux

    Humanodes Associs), from the highly influential comic, Giraud/Gir/Moebius which

    replicates the intense blue of Yves Klein. Another highlight of this diverse sale is the

    cover of comic number 43 from the Petit Vingtime (1932). A precursor of the

    magazine Tintin, this cover portrays one of the earliest versions of the famous boy

    reporter travelling by steamer, an early travel image by Herg.

    4July 2012LONDONTREASURES, PRINCELY TASTE

    Treasures, Princely Taste is a superbly curated sale of exceptional furniture and

    decorative arts. Many of pieces are rare and have exceptional aristocratic

    provenance. A sale highlight is the gilt-bronze-mounted mahogany table in the

    Empire style (est. 200,000-300,000), which was not only designed by Jacques-Louis

    David, the influential French painter, but was also built by Georges Jacob, who made

    beautiful chairs for Marie-Antoinette, and is immortalized in a painting by David which

    today hangs in the Louvre Museum. A highlight among the decorative arts is a veryrare pair of gilt-bronze-mounted Svres porcelain Vases Medicis manufactured by

    Royale de Porcelaine, Svres (est. 600,000-1,000,000), whose striking light-blue

    colour and rich polychromatic and gilt decoration lend magnificence to the impressive

    vases.

    EUROPEAN SCULPTURE AND WORKS OF ART: Medieval toModern Including an Important European Private Collection ofMedieval Works of Art

    Featuring sculpture and works of art from the Byzantine period to circa 1900, Julys

    sale of European Sculpture and Works of Art: Medieval to Modern is exceptional in its

    breadth and quality. The auction features a magnificent Medieval private collection

    comprising twenty seven works of art: ivories, enamels and metalwork including the

    fantastical Leopard Aquamanile (est. 500,000-700,000). In addition there are a

    number of small private collections within the sale, with focuses ranging from

    Kunstkammer objects to Belle Epoque bronzes. Sculptors of the Renaissance,Baroque and Rococo periods represented include Giovanni della Robbia, Antonio

    Raggi, Francesco Bertos, Guillielmus de Grof and Franois-Marie Poncet. The 19th

    century section includes works by Antoine-Louis Barye, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux,

    Carrier-Belleuse, Charles Cordier and Aim-Jules Dalou. The sale features several

    classicising monumental marbles, including The Three Graces by Antonio Frilli (est.

    120,000-180,000).

    The forthcoming Sothebys Old Master Drawings Sale (4th July) is led by three

    exceptional topographical views: Turners Lausanne from the West (est. 600,000-

    800,000) and The Domleschg Valley (est. 300,000-500,000) and a newly-

    discovered Canaletto, view of the Campo di San Gaicomo di Rialto (est. 300,000-

    500,000). Previously unrecorded, Campo di San Gaicomo di Rialto is the first

    major Canaletto drawing of a real Venetian view to be offered on the market in

    many years. Other highly notable works include Sebastiano Concas modello,

    Venus at the Forge of Vulcan (est. 20,000-30,000) and studies for a Madonna

    and Child by Fra Bartolomeo (est. 30,000-40,000).

    4July 2012LONDONOLD MASTER PAINTINGS

    Among the works to be offered at the Old Master and British Paintings Evening

    Sale will be two indisputable masterpieces of the German Renaissance: Lucas

    Cranach the Elders The Feilitzsch altarpiece (est. 4-6 million) and Hans Bildung

    Griens jewel-like Virgin and Child (est. 1-1.5 million). Both are among the last

    works by either artist remaining in private hands and as such present rare and

    significant opportunities for the collector. The sale is also privileged to offer Guido

    Renis David with the Head of Goliath (est. 3-5 million), a justly celebrated version

    of the powerful Baroque composition and acquired directly from the artist by the

    Duke of Modena, Francesco I DEste in 1633.
