Welcome to New National !eatre, Tokyo!e New National !eatre, Tokyo opened in 1997 as the principal national theatre in Japan in order to contribute to the growth of contemporary performing arts. !e New National theatre, Tokyo plans, produces and performs performances from the "elds of opera, ballet, contemporary dance, and drama. !e Opera Palace, with its excellent sound and full-scale proscenium #yle #age consi#ing of four parts exclusively for use in opera and ballet, is the "r# of its kind in Japan. !ere are three theatres at the New National !eatre, Tokyo, including the Opera Palace, making it one of the few comprehensive theatres in the world.With various performances throughout the year, we are able to welcome many audiences from whom we are honored to receive a high level of satisfa$ion. Furthermore, we are highly recognized by world-renowned arti#s, and also by leading European and American theatres. OPERA!ontents!e New National !eatre, Tokyo continues to make a#onishing growth, building on the out#anding achievements of my di#inguished predecessors including Hatanaka Royosuke, Igarashi Kiyoshi, !omas Novohradsky, and Wakasugi Hiroshi. I have been assigned the important role of Arti#ic Dire$or, Opera for the 2010/2011 season, and I am overwhelmed yet "lled with great anticipation. Based on the pa# achievements, I hope to take further #rides forward. I believe it is necessary that our performances mu# be wider, deeper and more enjoyable. By wider, I hope for wider range of audiences to come to see the performances, which inevitably means a wider sele$ion of performances. By deeper, I believe it is necessary to reach deeper into the hearts of Japanese people, but also the quality of the performances need to be dug down deeper. By enjoyable, I believe it is necessary for everybody involved in the performance, from the performers to orche#ra to the audience, to be able to enjoy their experience. I am "lled with anticipation for the #ar-#udded ca#s including Mori Hanae for co#umes for the opening a$ of

“Arabella”, a magni"cent #ory indescribable in words which takes place in my beloved city of Vienna. I am con"dent the Japanese condu$ors Ono, Hirokami, and Takaseki along with Arming will bring forward new energy to the New National !eatre, Tokyo. Love story of two sisters in a pursuit of their true love.

Set in Vienna in late 19th century aristocratic society, this enchanting masterpiece by Richard Strauss portrays the love stories of the sisters Arabella and Zdenka through harmonious and re!ned music. A popular piece loved by many around the world. The precise direction of Andreas Homoki created a great sensation after the !rst performance for his ability to vividly depict each character’s humanity, capturing the true essence of this piece. The love story of a poet and the daughter of a Count, ended tragically by their death on the block.

Set amidst the upheaval of the French revolution, this masterpiece by Umberto Giordano beautifully yet dynamically portrays the tragic love between a French poet Chénier, and the daughter of the Count Maddalena, and the feelings of her servant Gérard, who is torn between his revolutionary thoughts and his love for Maddalena. Phillipe Arlaud’s direction, making full use of the stage set of the New National Theatre, Tokyo, creates turbulence on stage which is further emphasized by his effective use of light and shade, featuring magni!cent colors. The audience can expect to enjoy every moment of this Italian Opera featuring a star-studded cast the powerful Mikhail Agafonov, and other star singers including Norma Fantini and Alberto Gazale.

TRISTAN UND ISOLDE

Richard Wagner’s masterpiece of love and lust, performed for the !rst time at the New National Theatre, Tokyo.

Based on a medieval legend, Wagner presents the ultimate form of love opera !lled with sensuality and intoxicating music, and with its original “Tristan Chord”, this piece is considered a landmark in the history of music. During composition, Wagner was having a love affair with the wife of Otto Wesendonck, and it is said his love and anguish is depicted in this piece. Ono Kazushi, active in Europe and United States, returns to the podium of the Opera Palace after a 12-year absence. Produced by the great David McVicar from Britain, this possibly is the !nest cast of Wagnerian singers available today.

A legendary drama written by Kinoshita Junji based on a Japanese folktale, combined with music written by 27 year old Dan Ikuma, brings an opera which is considered to be one of the greatest works in the history of Japanese opera. With more than 700 performances worldwide since its !rst stage in 1952, this opera is loved and recognized globally. Beautiful poetry with lyrical music creates a world of Japanese authenticity. The display of each character is brilliantly portrayed in this beautiful yet sorrowful story by Kuriyama Tamiya with his Japanese Noh stage in"uence. This is also an opportunity to see internationally recognized conductor Takaseki Ken who studied under Herbert von Karajan.

Based on the popular Abbé Prévost novel, this third opera by Giacomo Puccini is considered to be the work which brought him recognition as a composer. With the success of this opera, Puccini became one of the beloved composers in the Italian opera society. Sti"ingly passionate and sensual music portrays the story of the Chevalier des Grieux who declares his feelings of true love for Manon, a free and uninhibited girl. Poignant arias include Des Grieux’s “Quickly! In line!... No! I am crazy!”, and Manon’s “Alone, lost, abandoned”, which is sure to touch the hearts of many. Manon is played by Bulgarian beauty Svetla Vassileva who is famous for her performance in !rst-class theatres around the world.

A new production of Mozart’s love comedy.

The title translates as “Women are like that”, portraying two men in a search to test their loved ones of their !delity. For a long time, this piece was considered an immoral form of opera, yet it is now considered to be the pinnacle of Mozart comedy, portraying male and female emotional niceties and the true essence of human being. This new production is one to watch out for in many ways, especially to witness how the young Italian director Damiano Michieletto - who is in high demand from many opera houses around the world - portrays this love game on stage, and how conductor Paolo Carignani takes on Mozart’s beautiful ensemble during his !rst appearance at the New National Theatre, Tokyo.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY

The story of Madame Butter"y and her strong belief in love, which consequently ends in her death.

Set in Nagasaki prefecture during the Meiji period, this masterpiece portrays the sorrowful, yet beautiful life of the 15-year-old Madame Butter"y who devotes her love towards her husband, an American Naval of!cer. This piece holds the record for the most number of performances at the New National Theatre, Tokyo. Sweet melodies with dramatic music development, which are well-known characteristics of Giacomo Puccini operas, have captivated a wide audience. The title role is performed by young soprano Kristine Opolais, who has made back to back debuts at Wiener Staatsoper and Teatro alla Scala, and Kai Eijiro, a member of the Wiener Staatsoper, plays the role of Sharpless. Together with other incredible cast members, they bring a fresh performance to the New National Theatre, Tokyo.

A magni!cent triple bill to celebrate the opening of the season.

A triple bill !lled with staple elements to enjoy ballet. This is an opportunity to witness a rare combination of choreographers, featuring George Balanchine, the greatest choreographer of the 20th century, Mikhail Fokine, who was associated with the establishment of Ballet Russes, and David Bintley who is one of the most prominent choreographers of the present day.

“’Still Life’ at the Penguin Café”, in"uenced by the Penguin Café Orchestra which took the world by storm in the 80’s, is a very stylish production like no other. The stage is enlightened by penguins in waiter‘s uniforms, and a cheerful dance by sheep dressed up for the ball; however these animals are all endangered species. This piece hits a sore spot as it satirizes contemporary issues. “Symphony in C” pursues visual beauty, while “The Firebird” is a representation of dynamic Russian Ballet, performed on a new stage set by Dick Bird.

BALLET &DANCEFor my "r# year as the Arti#ic Dire$or of Ballet and Dance for 2010/2011 season, I have sele$ed “‘Still life’ at the Penguin Café”, “!e Firebird”, and “Symphony in C” for the opening performance of the triple bill. After being assigned as the arti#ic dire$or, I had #rong desire to present this triple bill as I wished to present to the Japanese audience how enriching and enjoyable a night "lled with carefully sele$ed ma#erpieces can be. I also believe that providing dancers with opportunities to perform various roles will encourage these dancers to discover their own talent and chara$eri#ics and open up the doors to them becoming magni"cent performers. Other performances include the out#anding produ$ion of “La Bayadère” by former Arti#ic Dire$or Maki Asami, “Romeo and Juliet” by MacMillan, and “In the Upper Room” which receives a #orm of applause for its every performance, is choreographed by Twyla !arp. I believe that these ecle$ic sele$ions will have something to o/er for a wide variety of audiences, and I have done the same for the sele$ion of Contemporary Dance performances to make sure it is enjoyed by the young and old of both sexes. Other varieties of performances include “DANCE to the Future 2011”, performed by the National Ballet of Japan, performances choreographed and performed by internationally renowned arti#s, and performances introducing young and spirited arti#s. I look forward to welcoming you to the New National !eatre Tokyo, and I sincerely hope you will enjoy your experience.

In search of new talents.

The theatre will stage 2 programmes by Japanese artists whose work is being

performed at the New National Theatre, Tokyo for the !rst time. These works

include solo dances, duets, trios, and group dances by internationally performing

artists, or up –and-coming choreographers. By providing these young artists with

the chance to perform there, the New National Theatre, Tokyo hopes to give

promising young artists the boost they need to take their art to the next level.

The !rst performance of the “Rite of Spring” in November 2008 at the New

National Theatre, Tokyo touched the hearts of many, and for her direction,

choreography, and the thrilling performance of the piece, Motoko Hirayama

earned the New Artist Award in the 59th MEXT Awards for art. Adding to the

return of the “Rite of Spring”, a new piece; “Soldier’s Tale” will be added to the

line-up. We can expect to see another all round performance by Hirayama,

suitable for this Stravisky evening.

I am humbled to be appointed Arti#ic Dire$or of Plays for the 2010/2011 season. I believe that the fascination of drama lies in the joy of having new encounters and experiences. !rough plays, we are able to encounter and learn about diverse views of life, the way we perceive things, and various forms of expression, and we can be #imulated both intelle$ually and emotionally, and be touched through the experience. With that notion in mind, and to further expand the fascination of play, I have compiled the 2010/2011 season line up, including the series entitled “Japan Meets... A Look at the Lineage of Contemporary Drama”. Over a period of more than 100 years, drama in Japan has evolved dramatically by encountering the magni"cent plays of the world, and I have sele$ed 4 of the mo# in0uential plays. All are monumental works; however we have adopted new translations to di#inguish the themes and appeal of this series di#in$ively. On the other hand, returning to the New National !eatre Tokyo are popular Japanese plays including

“Yakiniku Dragon” which received great attention for its performance in 2008, alongside “Choukanzu”. Other performances include the enthusia#ic #aging of “Ame”, a ma#erpiece by Inoue Hisashi, one of the prominent "gures of contemporary drama, and a highly motivated produ$ion by the young and spirited Go Aoki. !ere will be events held monthly at the theatre in relation to each produ$ion, including readings and symposiums. I wish to expand the fascination of drama through produ$ion of high quality performances and variety of related events.

A classic piece by the founder of contemporary drama, Henrik Ibsen which was !rst performed in 1891. Portrays life and relationships which resonate strongly today.

The !rst piece of the “JAPAN MEETS –a Look at the Lineage of Contemporary Drama”, will be one of the most contemporary works of Henrik Ibsen, which artistic director Keiko Miyata has had on the backburner for years. It will be the opening production for her !rst season as artistic director. Miyata revised Ibsen’s “The Complete Major Prose Plays” which was published in January this year in Norway, also working on translation of the material herself. Now, in a world in which even the term “believe” arouses uncertainty, Hedda’s drama, in which characters are determined to protect what they believe in, resonates strongly with us today.

A controversial work by Tennessee Williams, portraying the power of lies and the truth.

This is Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece alongside others including “The Glass Menagerie”, and “A Streetcar Named Desire”, and this won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955. Williams has said this was his favorite of all his plays. It became a Broadway hit, with direction by Elia Kazan, with a !lm version also released featuring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. This work portrays human communication revealing the truth of human feelings. “Meanwhile! - I want to go on talking to you as freely and intimately about what we live and die for as if I knew you better than anyone else whom you know.” Tennessee Williams#

In this busy 21st century, take a moment to reconsider the value of ordinary everyday life.

A masterpiece by Thornton Wilder which was !rst performed in 1938, winning the Pulitzer Prize that year. Since then, “Our Town” has been performed all over the world. This work is thought to be the origin of contemporary drama, and had a great in"uence on how contemporary dramas are written. Standing aloof from our boring and ordinary lives, characters come to question the value of their ordinary lives. Live piano music, sometimes played in strong dynamic tones, creates an atmosphere on the stage which is sure to resonate with the audience.

An immortalized piece in the history of stage drama makes its !rst appearance at the New National Theatre, Tokyo.

Rounding up the “JAPAN MEETS…A Look at the Lineage of Contemporary Drama” series is a monumental work that altered the course of theatre worldwide. “Waiting for Godot” was not well received when it premiered in 1953 in Paris, but the play has since gone down in history as a seminal piece of the theatre of the absurd. This cornerstone of contemporary theatre is still performed across the globe. One of the masterpieces in world dramatic history, the 2011 performance at the New National Theatre cannot be missed.

CHOUKANZUThe “Our Contemporary” series in which the audiences are able to enjoy previously performed pieces. What it means to retrieve what you have once lost.

For this play, a young playwright whose play made its debut in 2008 at New National Theatre, Tokyo, collaborates with a veteran director for a collaboration project, the “Our Contemporary”. Out of the 3 performances in 2008, this work gained great reviews also with help from Watanabe Misako who played the leading part. Watanabe also returns for this season. Set around an old sailors inn, this play portrays people in the area on their search to !nd ‘something’ they have lost. This story of a family concerning their reclaimed land is sure to cause resonance amongst the audience.

YAKINIKU DRAGONAn opportunity to meet the family and people from “Yakiniku Dragon” once again on stage!

The second collaboration piece with Seoul Arts Center which celebrated its 20th anniversary, it was !rst performed in 2008, both in Tokyo and Seoul, and received a standing ovation after every performance. This much-discussed play, which swept away numerous awards for drama in these two countries, makes its return to the New National Theatre, fully prepared.

Set in a local Yakiniku (Korean BBQ) restaurant in Kansai, Japan-Korea relations are depicted through one Korean family resident in Japan. The play – by turns comical, sad, and painful – deals with issues de!ning the present, past and future relationship between Japan and Korea. As with the premier performance, this encore production will feature mixed casts of actors, comical storytellers and musicians from both Japan and Korea.

Kuriyama Tamiya challenges Inoue Hisashi’s masterpiece drama with new direction.

35 years prior to his tragic death in April of 2010, Inoue Hisashi wrote his masterpiece “Ame” while living in Australia. This extraordinary work is coming to the New National Theatre, Tokyo as a new production after being extensively performed at Gogatsusha and Komatsuza. The play presents the story of Toku, a man who assumes another identity in a scheme to become rich, the people he encounters, and Otaka, the woman of fate. The tale is written in beautiful Japanese that "ows from Inoue’s pen. Through it, we see the pain, the sadness and the joy of people simply living their lives.

For his !rst performance at the New National Theatre, Tokyo, Go Aoki’s original scenario portrays Japan after the 80’s.

Aoki started the production unit “Gring”, where he acts as writer and director, and in recent years he has written works for several other theatre companies. Through meticulous research and smart crafting of scenarios, his work depicts the drama found in everyday life. The humorous dialogue of his characters portrays all manner of con"icts, emotions, and human relationships in a style only possible in theatre. His work maintains a positive view of people while at the same time deftly raising issues which question modern society.

Our aim is to further popularize stage performance, to contribute in making our society "lled with rich culture with broad minded people, and to educate the young.

Various EventsIn hopes to provide deeper understanding by the audience and to enhance their experience of the performance, talk events by the staff members and casts are held in correspondence of the performance. Backstage TourBackstage tour introduces theatre facilities, and stage equipments. The tour will include going backstage of Opera Palace for those Opera and Ballet audiences, they will get a sense of what it is like to be on the performing end.

Young Artists Training ProgrammeIn 1998, the New National Theatre, Tokyo, Opera Studio opened, followed by the opening of the Ballet School in 2001, and the Drama Studio in 2005. It is where next generation of talented opera singers, ballet dancers, actors and actresses train day-in and day-out. This programme is not only to teach these younger generation with speci"c technical skills, with broad knowledge to cultivate them, but also at the same time to provide them with programmes such as stage dedicated to further developing the talents of younger generation with education of speci"c technical skills, broader knowledge, but to provide them with stage practice which only can be provided by the theatre attached programme.
