FOCUS ON WORSHIP
Season after Pentecost / Ordinary Time: The Season after Pentecost constitutes the second half of the
Church year and makes up the longest portion of it. This season follows the Easter season and the feasts of
Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. This season ends on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. It
may extend over a period of twenty-eight Sundays. The season’s length is determined by the date set for
Easter. It mainly concerns Christ's preaching and ministry, with many of his parables read as the Gospel
readings. This is the Time of the Church–the time we focus on growing together in the life of the Holy
Trinity. During the Sundays after Pentecost we decorate the church with the color green which is the color
for this season. Green is the color of growing plants and life. As growing plants need water and nourishment,
so we can only grow by living in our Baptisms and receiving the Lord’s Word and Sacraments. In the Time
of the Church, we focus on the life of Christ in His Church as He guides us to grow in “faith toward God and
in fervent love toward one another.” The appointed Gospels for the Sundays after Pentecost are full of Jesus’ teachings, such as His parable, words of wisdom, and debates with the Pharisees. We also hear the Word of
the Old Testament prophets, who are inspired by the Spirit to foretell Jesus’ coming, as the word of the
apostles, sent forth by Jesus to preach in the power of the Spirit. The Time of the Church is a time to grow
in godly knowledge. Through His Word, Jesus is still making disciples of all those who will follow Him.

Summertime and the living is easy – except for Barbara Kipps! As you may know, from June to September the chancel choir takes a break from rehearsing and generally takes life easy. Oh sure, you may enjoy their occasional anthems but only one choir member is hard at work all summer long – our very own Barbara Kipps. As reggae star Bob Marley once sang: “she be jammin’ ” In her own words, here is the story of Barbara Kipps, farmer’s market star! “I make 20 different fruit products from our home-grown grapes, apples, peaches, cherries and kiwis. They are in the form of juices, jellies, jams, butters and sauces. Products are sold on site during the harvest season, generally August through early September. In Richmond, I vend at Farmers’ markets May - October and at holiday bazaars in November and December. In the summer, I alternate weeks at Manakin Market on Saturdays, 9:00am to 1:00pm. I’ll try to do the same trick with the Westchester Farmers’ Market on Thursdays, 4:00pm to 7:00pm. But I’ve gone every week for a while to get my presence established at it. The best way to see if I’ll be at market is to check out Kipps Grapes on Facebook. I post every week when I’m going to be at each market/bazaar. You can also look at the Facebook pages of the two markets.” So, go visit the Manakin Sabot or Westchester Commons Farmer’s Markets some Saturday soon and say hi to the ever-smiling Barbara Kipps – Farm Market Star! SANCTUARY FLOWERS
Would you like to place Flowers
on the Altar on Sunday?
If so, please sign up on the
Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.
Questions?
Please see the information below
or call the Office at 804-272-0486.
Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used
to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a
special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a
certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed
directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home
after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the
container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience. You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.
The 2018 Flower Chart Calendar
The 2018 Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.
THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone that signed up for our open Altar Flowers dates. We appreciate it.
We now have at least one arrangement of flowers for every Sunday for the rest of the year.
Please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
We love when we have two arrangements for Sunday morning so please feel free to check out the chart!
If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. The Altar Flower Chart
is hanging in the fellowship hall near the kitchen.

“God’s Work, Our Hand’s”
Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event
September 7, 2019, 9:30am to 11:30am
This year we are once again uniting with “Rise Against Hunger” (formerly Stop Hunger Now) to make
meals for the hungry throughout the world. We plan to break last year’s record of 23,544 meals!
We packaged that many meals in two hours. Wow! That’s a tremendous amount! We thank everyone that helped
us last year, our church members young and older and other friends of St. Luke. As you can see by the pictures
below, we worked hard but had a great time doing it! We hope to see you again this year on September 7, 2019,
9:30am to 11:30am. Our goal for this year is 26,776 meals!
“Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us;” As we go into the world and care for those who do not have their “daily
bread” we also tell the wonderful love and life in Jesus Christ. We are fulfilling Jesus command
to go into all the world and tell the Good News of Jesus Christ to everyone!
What can I do besides helping pack the meals? You can donate to our “Rise Against Hunger”
project. We need to raise $7500.00. Please write “ Rise Against Hunger” on the memo line of your check.
Please contact Marty Witthoefft to sign up to help pack the meals or is you have any questions. His home phone
number is 804-272-9584. His email address is [email protected].

His class will resume after “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday. His first fall class will be on September 11, 2019. Have a wonderful summer!

On Tuesday, May 28th we came together for our “Start of Summer Supper” at 5:30 pm with Burgers, Hot Dogs and Salads.
Following dinner, we enjoyed the Big Band sounds of the 18 piece band, Chesterfield Community Band Jazz Ensemble!
