In August of 2013, A&E decided to focus on the underrepresented sides of parenting with the premiere of the unscripted sitcom Modern Dads. The show centered around four stay-at-home-dads who experienced the joys and struggles of parenthood. Although it was a reality TV show, critics and audiences alike regarded Modern Dads as obviously scripted, over the top, and ridiculous. The main complaint was the ease in which the show’s production resorted to reality TV tropes which resulted in a portrayal of the four fathers as incompetent. Despite the negative reviews from major media sources, critics consistently pointed out Sean Kent comedian as the most interesting of the group, citing his genuine interactions with his two stepdaughters. Before the Austin-based dad managed to keep things real on a scripted reality show, Sean Kent earned recognition on the comedy circuit and in the writer’s room. A stand-up comedian since 1994, Kent gained nationwide exposure in 2003 as a contestant on the first season of Last Comic Standing. Though he was the first comedian to be voted off, Kent returned two years later as a contestant on season 3, advancing to the semifinals.
