For the first time in Europe, according to Henkel Teroson, IG manufacturers have the choice of a reactive single-component IGsealant/adhesive. A new product, Terostat-975, was presented at glasstec2002 alongside the company’s TPS System of Terostat-970 and Terostat-998 RS, and a range of IG sealants that the German company describes as providing “continuity” in a difficult market.

early handling, theavoidance of mixingproblems and reducedwaste and mainte-nance costs. The system’s insu-lating performancehas been testingaccording to EN-1279to comply with Euro-pean regulations; anda market introductionstudy has given “po-sitive results”.Terostat-975 was, however, only one ofa range of Terostatproducts at glasstec.Henkel is, for exam-ple, currently workingon combining itsnew product withTerostat-970 – thecompany’s first ther-moplastic spacer. Thisorganic ThermoplasticSpacer System (TPS)has three functions– PIB sealant, spacerprofile and desiccant.Described by Henkelas a “milestone in thehistory of sealants”,it can be automati-cally formed with an

inter-pane distance set on demand from 1 to 20millimetres. Terostat-970 is combined withTerostat-998 RS outside seal to form a TPS thatrequires no metallic, or any other type of,spacer bar.Another established product is Terostat-969, sealappropriate for conventional insulating glass sys-tems (ideally combined with Terostat-998 RSpolysulphide external sealant). The caoutchouc-based outside sealantTerostat-971 is intended for simpler applicationsand smaller insulating units.Despite introducing new products, WolfgangNetzer, Marketing and Sales Manager for insu-lating glass sealants at Henkel Teroson, said“especially in difficult times we place our betson continuity.” “We want,” he said, “to be a pre-

n the United States, reactive hotmeltsequivalent to a dual seal have conquereda considerable market share. But, until

recently, they had not entered the European mar-ket. In October, at glasstec 2002, HenkelTeroson introduced Terostat-975, which itclaims “will conquer a place within the circleof established outer insulating glass sealantsin Europe.” The new sealant is warm-appliedat 95°C. It generates an immediate physicaladhesion to glass and spacebar, enabling IG unitsto be handled early. Then – which is the “new”bit – it “chemically creates a three-dimen-sional network to a highly solid polymer struc-ture with the help of its integrated adhesionpromoter systems.”The advantages of the sys-tem are – its makers claim – fast processing and

dictable and reliablepartner for our cus-tomers.” This is to beachieved partly by acontinuing focus onpolysulphide as a poly-mer base. Polysulphide productshave been in use fordecades and they havethe additional assu-rance of testing intro-duced in August 2001in EN 1279, part 6.Henkel Teroson reportthat, Terostat-998 R,under this test proce-dure, provided perfectadherence to the spa-cer profile even after24 hours of storage atroom temperature. ■
